My mother grew up in an apartment building constructed in the early 1920s that had an elevator somewhat like this. I was always a bit unsettled by it when I rode in it, in the 1960s.

There a lot of these antique elevators here in my area one of which I remember was in a furniture store called Safavieh where they had a 100 year old cage lift installed in 1916 still crank operated being used as part service/passenger

Using that elevator might seem cool the first few times because you can control it.

Now I figured out why people need elevator operators in the past...

When things were used to be built like tanks.... Seriously! What a 1920s piece of QUALITY. I really love the vintage design of it and the manually controlled system. New elevators won't last for more than 10 years.!

They may be older. Our city of Evansville has homes built in the 1880's modernized to this century now but the outer shell of the house is 1880's!!!! This a manual electric. One of the houses great Aunt lived in and it had this kind of elevator. It was remodeled several times but still this kind. It's now a Bed and Breakfast.

I call these "Haunted Vampire Elevators" since they are found in old creepy "vampire buildings" that are featured in horror movies, like the lift in an abandoned prison seen in John Carpenter's 1998 Movie "Vampires". I can't shake the feeling that when the doors open you will be greeted by a dark and scary scene and a ghost and/or vampire is going to jump out at you!

That motor sounds like the old fire alarms in my school

It sounds like that prison's alarm from The Walking Dead hahahaha

My dad's a plumber and when I was young, he use to take me to his jobs all the time and one time we got into an elevator kind of like this, it was kinda weird

I ever dreamed about this elevator.. I remembered it in so much detail.. the sound, the old vibe, the moss and the ground is so dirty..

I rode in one of these at a friends apartment building. We couldn't go to the top (the sign said so but you could it was just padlocked so you couldn't exit because the top 2 floors of the building were unsafe for occupancy. I am fairly sure that nobody lives there now, it needed A LOT of work, plumbing, electrical, etc. etc. The building at one time was a bank.

Best classic elevator.
