Death Stranding has been an enigma for so many years ever since the first Death Stranding trailer that it’s weird to say we finally have it in our hands, and a chance to see a Death Stranding ending to the story. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing though is totally down to the player, because I think Death Stranding is the most divisive game of all time. Some love it, some hate it. There’s no inbetween. Except in my case - where I love the Death Stranding story and all the Death Stranding cutscenes, but couldn’t STAND the Death Stranding gameplay. And that’s what this Death Stranding review is all about - it’s not really a review - but a first impressions as I explain why I couldn’t get on with the game and it’s ridiculous runtime, and why I think it’s a huge problem that it takes over 10 hours to eventually start going somewhere - no matter what the themes of the story are. Because I mean, check out those original Death Stranding trailer videos and the Death Stranding reveal. All that insanity is still here, and that’s what gripped me…..but the walking simulator aspect was a little too much. You can hammer a point home too hard, and that’s what I think Death Stranding gameplay ultimately becomes. There’ll be no Death Stranding explained video from me today, since I couldn’t bring myself to get to the Death Stranding ending, but I will watch a Death Stranding explained video or maybe even a Death Stranding walkthrough to see what I missed - has anyone done a Death Stranding speedrun yet? I’d love to see that. So either way, please enjoy my Death Stranding review. Of the first hour. Or 10. By the way, the Death Stranding OST or Death Stranding music is great.

Enough about me, though. What did YOU all think of Death Stranding? Game of the Year? Century? Or did you feel even worse about it than I did? Also, the final outtake is my thanks to you for watching all of my ranting.

I really enjoyed this game and I can see where you are coming from, but if you do give this game another shot I would suggest playing at least to episode 4 and how you feel after that, and you should be really close to it like another hour.

I am glad Death Stranding exists; it's different, I've never played anything like it before. For my first 30 or so hours of this game I actually really enjoyed the mechanics. I'd take my time through the world and have fun just making deliveries; I knew what I was getting into when I bought the game. I also played in anticipation for the cutscenes and was especially intrigued by Mads Mickelson's character. But After those 30 hours, around that bloody snowy mountain bit, I found myself being annoyed at the gameplay and decided to rush through the rest of the game as fast as possible to get it over with. I hated it. And loved it. I'm very confused, just like the internet seems to be.

I haven't played it, but if what you say is true, I think I'll stick to let's players for this one. I've got Nier Automata for my fun gameplay and epic story fix. Actually, that game hammers the "you're not alone" idea way better than this one in just 5 minutes.

Hi Cadds. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion about the game and explaining why you felt the way you did. I can see why other people like the game, but from what I can tell about it, it's not something that interests me either. Personally, if I wanted to play a game where you're a courier who tries to make a difference on a post-apocalyptic America, I would just play Fallout: New Vegas. Thanks for the video.

I loved it. I don't need it to be another bang boom action game. I loved putting on a podcast, going on a long gorgeous yet creepy and weird trek, and then feeling like I've created bonds with complete strangers as I study their paths through an area, leave flags that also help, etc. etc. I understand why it's so divisive and it's... kind of hard for me to recommend it? But I adored it.

I actually really enjoy the slowness of the beginning for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. It being so soul-crushing while still being mechanically deep (how to organize your load, working together with strangers to build structures to make your lives easier, keeping balance on poor footing, planning routes through/away from BT territories) kind of drives home the fact that everything in this world is miserable. There's a lot of goofy Kojima bits like the whole Monster Energy thing, and some of the dialogue feels very silly and fourth-wall-breaking just for the sake of being a video game, but that's what I signed up for. A common opinion I've heard about this game is that it's the most expensive niche indie title of all time, and I think that hits it right on the head.

  • @raz176

As Caddy says... the biggest issue this has is that people think it's an action game. But if you think of it as a puzzle/strategy adventure game it makes more sense. It's more about managing your resources, structures and balancing things as you journey from A to B. If you don't like it, that's cool, but I personally love it. The atmosphere and mood sucked me in so it didn't feel too tedious.

It still falls shorts as a game in many areas, but the reasons why it falls are still more fascinating and much more of a learning experience than yet another 60$ microtransaction fest where it's the same controversy all over again, which is what would probably happen with EA. If the game doesn't grab you within the first 10 hours, you probably won't enjoy it after 50 either. The fun in this game comes from the lonely journey, the rare but well placed pieces of music, the inventory micromanagement, the risk/reward of trying different routes and methods of carrying cargo and of course the story. I can definitely see why some people wouldn't enjoy this (it's certainly meant to be consumed in large chunks at a time which people may not have spare), but I feel like going into it with the mindset of "I will give it X hours before I expect something amazing to happen" is the wrong attitude to have

I find that too many games have the problem of a slow opening lately. Take ac odyssey for example, I Iove it but it takes about 7-12 hours of playing to even reach the title. I get story and buildup is important (especially in death stranding) but it doesn’t matter if it takes too long for the game to actually get going and to actually have more fun gameplay But only kojima could make a game about being a postman depressing Edit: hey first time I’ve gotten over a hundred likes cool! But... I mean, as soon as you get the bike, for me, that's already the intro finished, and... I loved the intro as well. I Don't Get It. How come so many people had different expectations (same shit happened with sekiro... But here it's even more extreme) and how come those that seem to have my same tastes and likes somehow hate everything i love about death stranding and love everything i find boring. Perhaps "the open world game for people that don't like open world games" was the right guess i had, cause i hate BOTW, the new GoW, rdr and so many other open worlds, yet love death stranding... Which in turn would make sense des gets hated by people that love open world games. Though I can't understand why.

No amount of "artistic integrity" will save a game from being a boring piece of crap. Ch 3 and beyond that has been great for me so far. And you don’t like you don’t like it oh well. I just look at the environment within the game as a puzzle rather than an action game. It is not for everyone and that I think is a good thing for the industry, it makes more creative and weird games possible. In our time where AAA games are all made to be as "fun" for as many people people as possible, so that it sells as much as it can, it can be a whiplash when you encounter a AAA game that is not made with that intention at all.
