It’s great to deep dive into coolant.

I think Mark hit on the BIGGEST overlooked item pertaining to the coolant system - the radiator cap. I know it's one item i'm looking at changing when i change my coolant shortly. Just over 100K since the coolant/thermostat was last changed (which was necessary when the OE water pump failed, LOL!). Just rolled past the 515K mark on my 20 yr old Ram, and i've noticed the temperature tends to creep up when going above 120 lately. More so when maintaining that speed while going up a decent grade. I've put the last 185K on it, so i'm sure the original owner never changed the cap, unless it was done at the dealer (Chrysler prt number is on the cap, so i'm pretty sure it's OE). Thanks for another great episode.

Now granted.. I've never looked for this topic, but, I watch a lot of channels and have never seen this discussed. Thank you.

@@TheDieselPodcast Don't change the trans fluid, you might need all that clutch disk material for it to shift. Ran beautifully for years before that change. 😅

Be careful with inaccurate fill values. Both my late 1st gen ram and my 98 12v hold 5.5 Ga buy call for 4.

I am new to diesels, just got a 1994 IDI turbo. One big concern for me is cavitation, and how to combat it.

generally cavitation occurs when catalyst material and some other chemicals the inhibitors i'm not 100% sure. are depleted (old coolant) it causes Cavitation once the inhibitors are gone.

I have been using Evans Waterless Coolant in my 08 ZO6 Corvette and my 6.5l diesel pickup for years now and so far I haven’t had any issues with it. It takes a lot of coolant to do that because you have to flush the system out to start with sometimes it takes a couple rounds maybe three rounds before you get it completely cleaned out where you have nothing but your Evans waterless coolant in it. It gets expensive when you get to that point when you have to change from one to the other if you lose a hose or have to change the radiator because the tank broke his plastic tanks it does get expensive for Evans but I think it’s pretty good coolant list for me. It’s been good. I haven’t had any issues with it since I got everything flushed out at the very beginning took a lot of time to do it, lotta flushing’s just don’t put water in it or don’t let any mechanics do it for you because they’ll screw it all up and you gotta start over again

Great episode love all of everything the podcast is. question is I've got my Cummins that's unfortunately been sitting for a few years due to needing make some repairs it currently has its water and coolant still in it and wondering it that could have cause damage? should drain it if just sitting there for extended period of time will hurt the internals or if it'd be worse to drain it and leave it empty another month or two till I have it back on the road.

If I was you, and I knew what was going to be sitting for a couple more months I would just leave it as is, because it won't do any more damage sitting in there since it's not getting heated up to temperature and cool to down multiple times which causes the breakdown and creates the acidic reaction.

On 7.3s 99 and earlier must use SCA additive Vc-8 from ford. Keeps cavitation from occurring. Which is tiny air bubbles that attach to cylinder walls. Creating pitting. And I just use simple green coolant and Distilledwater.. And a coolant filter helps out alot also. Because when they sand casted these blocks. They left alot of sand inside coolant jackets. I went through 3 filters before I finally got barely any crap out of filters. Also DO NOT RUN GOLD COOLANT IN A E99 OR 99 7.3. IT WILL EAT SEALANT AROUND INJECTOR CUPS.

Have you guys ever heard of evans waterless coolant and or tried it?

The orange coolant in GM 3.8 will eat the head gasket and ruin it. It deteriorates it. I take the orange coolant out and add the old skool green coolant .

Also what type of amsoil coolant would I use if I do use the SCA ADDITIVE? THANKYOU.

The heavy duty one - made for Iron Blocks and has the SCA's built in. Read the data sheet.

I put the heavy duty Amsoil antifreeze in my car is that going to hurt anything I didn’t use their lower grade I use their higher grade

I use Rotella VLC for everything. Just a bit scare to use it on my Ecoboost. Thoughts?

@@mstrickk1 well , I have been thinking on using it for at least 3 years. But I didn't want go to the trouble on flushing the coolant but since I'm rebuilding my engine, now is the perfect time to do it.

I know ill get called stupid for this, but i still use Prestone or Zerex dexcool in my LLY, i change it every 30-40k and i havn't had any problems on either of my trucks. Most people never change it, so of course it breaks down over time. Your also moving water/chemicals through different metals surfaces in a loop, while being heated and cooled over and over, that ALWAYS causes issues over time if the fluid is not replaced. The only Bonus out of the GM engineers that put the coolant bypass ontop of everything, is that if you want to do any part replacement on the top of the motor, your draining the coolant. Wanna clean your map sensor? Drain the coolant.

Dex is the worst coolant on this plant. I've seen so many GMs to where it turns to chocolate milk after 60 k.. and you can never get it all out.

Agree with Randal, some how gov motors kept it off alot of the web, but if you search long enough you will see the class action suits regarding dexkool and engine damage. The propylene glycol (dex) turns acidic with age and will eat the plastic intake gaskets on the older vortecs.(traditional green is ethylene glycol, poisonous to animals and us, but not the engine, simple fix is to get the stuff with bittering agent to prevent poisoning) I mean that orange planned obsolescence juice was supposed to be good for 100K miles. I brought a 97 K1500 with a 5.0L dirt cheap because of what I surmise was the owner praying the intake gaskets and stop leak didnt let loose that was holding the intake gaskets together.(the coolant was black so I know something strange was up) My 03 S10 w/ 4.3L owned since new, had that orange poison I changed regularly and then went green at around 45K when I heard the orange coolant nightmares . The intake gaskets were just ready to let loose when I changed them at 65K miles,fortunately on an external area of engine where I would of only had an external leak, unlike the K1500 when alot of coolant dumped into the oil pan. Fortunately caught before any catastrophic damage. Sorry for swimming in the diesel waters here, but I cannot see dexkool being good in any gm after my experiences.

@@daveondre4892 like i said though, neither of my trucks keep their fluids long before replacement. the diesel extra so. The old dex cool was bad yes, but that was over 20 years ago.

Since I did buddies 4.3 at like 240k intake gaskets hoses that were sonding like potato chips. I put green coolant in. Van now has 410k. Hasn't leaked a bit. Hoses sound ok. And done 2 water pumps since then. True believer in green.

Another area people neglect power steering fluid anytime I buy a used vehicle I always change the power steering fluid and I use Amsoil matter fact my 97 jeep grand Cherokee I bought for my girlfriend has 264,000 miles on it and the power steering fluid was leaking pretty bad when I left her house to drive to my place about a mile and a half 2 miles away I’ve topped it off with Amsler transmission fluid drove it home couple days later just driving around the house cause I didn’t have plates or insurance on it I had to top it off again and it was in February and you could see it where it was dripping on the ground because of the snow and then as time went on because less and less and I got to the point don’t leak at all anymore but I know that I filled that reservoir up enough times I completely displaced all the old fluid and the pump I put 0W 30 oil in the engine change differentials did all kind of stuff transfer case I have yet to do the transmission fluid damn I wish I had a plug on the torque converter like they used to but anyway they don’t that 5.2 L runs a lot quieter than it used to because the oil I put in there that zero 30+ I ran some of that Amazon Fleshner but anyway this is six in a row jim again like I said got a 91.5 dodge three-quarter ton Give you three guesses what’s under the hood anyway you guys have a good day and Amsoil thank you for the good products I’ve had nothing but extremely good luck with her products I’m from Kennerdell Pennsylvania😅😮

Wish it was that simple. The EPAs war on diesel that lead to DEF in 2007 and shops being fined the last few years, dates back to the 1970s. Keep playing the two party game and you'll lose every time.

Unfortunately even if Trump knew better and appointed someone to do the right thing, doesn't mean they will. Look at the troops he ordered to bring home. He came to find out months later that they WEREN'T brought home despite his order. Politics aren't that simple/are complete bullshit.

Also like to add that the EPA was created by a Republican. Then, five more Republican presidents after him did nothing to limit or remove the EPA or their ability to create and manipulate laws. Have fun trying to make that broken two party system give you a different result. Since the EPAs creation, there have been 4 democrat presidents compared to 6 republican presidents. Why should I believe republicans are going to finally do something about their own creation this time? They've already had the most chances.

This is six in a row JIM again I had bought my 91.5 dodge in March 1998 used for moving cars out in Seattle I subcontract to a company called cheap tow and is about three months into it I had to change water pump and a big deal close to 150,000 so I change the pump and buy a year or so later by year and a half I’d say anyway I had to change it again I figured well you know what probably just a bad pump well I move back to Pennsylvania and it’s about 02 had to do it again figure a way to my son is going on here why I’ve been an Amazon dealer since 87 and I called the tech people down soil and he said it’s not your pumps you can’t do anything wrong installing those things cause there’s just to Bolts where you go he said it’s your antifreeze I said OK so I change the antifreeze off completely I drained everything out I everything out and I don’t three gallons of Amsoil antifreeze because I still had fair amount of distilled water and I wanted to make sure I was able to handle 40 below zero weather cause I’m in Pennsylvania now well you know what that water pump has over 300,000 miles on it since then and it’s still perfectly fine all right this is six in a row jim From Kennerdell Pennsylvania
