Quote "It was the stupidest decision we ever made" (on firing him). You can find the interview here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YpN_1rZxiNe3gaw.html Prigden has unbelievable technique but his style didn't fit the band. Jon was and is more creative and wasnt just doing crazy chops for the sake of doing crazy chops. Not only that, the technical ability shown by Jon on their albums is unreal too, so good they tried hiring many drummers to replace him but ultimately fell short. Sure, hes not doing the stuff he was in those days now hes with QOTSA, but he doesnt need to with that band, again highlighting the fact hes more creative. Creative drummers > Technical drummers. Cedric’s voice “as an instrument” is definitely the perfect metaphor for his voice for the simple fact that as much as his voice is recognizable, on every album, it’s a different sounding instrument. I don’t even particularly care for higher range voices like Geddy Lee for instance, but Cedric Bixler-Zavala is on another level and I’ve always thought of him as one of The Mars Volta’s strongest instruments. Check out their album Frances the Mute if you really want your mind blown.

This record came right after Cedric (singer) and Omar (guitar) left their first band At the Drive In who were a mix of this style of latin influence rhythm section and slightly avant garde punk rock/prog rock. At the Drive In's record "Relationship of Command" is still to this day one of my absolute favorite records. One Armed Scissor (the first single from that record) came out when I was a wee lad in the 8th grade and I didn't put their record down for a year solid. The Mars Volta was basically Omar and Cedric wanting to go further with the latin influence and disagreeing with the rest of their previous band about the sound they were going to go for.

I'd seen them live and they're a jam band for sure. Always spacing a 6 minute track out to 15+, if you listen to their older live shows you hear snippets of passages that end up on their future recordings. You said that they got that punky aspect going through, half the band rose from the ashes of "At the Drive-In", a staple of the post-punk movement in the late 90's. This was a Rick Rubin joint so absolutely check out more from this album if you ever get back around to them. BTW - It's pronnounced "Inner-she-attic"
