It does take some amount of workable musical knowledge. As most people don't have that it'll be hard to understand how it works, but it's basically like learning a new language: you study it, get your head around it, and when you're advanced enough you listen to a spoken text, and see if you can translate it on the spot.

The biggest thing about Mick and Jim's playing doesn't necessarily come down to the complexity of the riffs, but more on the smaller things like how they slide and bend, even how they mute certain things. These things make them pretty unique guitarists in their setting.

And damn fun to play (hard) on an western-acoustic guitar with more or less standard chords and standard e-tuning (or D). People just go "What the f.......? On an acoustic??? " And all find it awesome, not expecting such songs can be played on "that kind of guitars" LOL I started doing that with dead memories. It matches so good to that style playing.

I always thought slipknot sounded easy. That was before I started learning it. It's not the hardest but a lot of their songs are pretty hardish. Their timing is different from the standard. Imagine having to learn the drums to these songs by ear.

You should try any song off of 'Infest the Rats' Nest' by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. A little anomalous compared to what you usually do, but the songs are fun to learn and play. Venusian 1, Venusian 2, Hell, and Self-Immolate are all songs from the album that I think you'd fuck with and enjoy learning/playing.
