Olá, Porto! 🇵🇹 | What a first impression...

After saying goodbye to Ireland, we caught a plane to Porto, Portugal -- and what did we find when we arrived? A beautiful city waiting to be explored! It was unlike anything we'd ever seen before, with colorful, compact buildings layered up sloping hills (which were exhausting to climb, by the way!), and the things we did during our first days in the city -- from trying Porto wine, to exploring a quirky bookshop, to tasting unique jam flavors in equally unique containers -- became memories we'll never forget.

    Love the scenery and architecture but mostly the human elements i.e. the excitement and anticipation of you guys looking at the view from you room, 88 stairs, food, walking in the rain, chocolate shop, trying not to slip, alley ways possible danger, walking uphill "feelin' it", "speaking of beautiful", and great sound track! Enjoy!

    I love Porto ive been 13 times. Go back in June. Shame about the rain. Ive slipped a few times in Porto especially when it rains. Im pleased you liked it. You should try and go back in the spring or summer even though it does sometimes rain then.

    We definitely think the weather colored our perception of the city over the course of our time there. It made an incredible first impression, and was always beautiful to look at, but after 3 straight days of grey and gloom and rain, we felt ready to move on. That said, however, you're right: we can absolutely see how going in spring or summer would be ideal there. It's the perfect "kick back and chill" city, so a few days of relaxing by the water, going for a boat ride, etc. with blue skies and sunshine is the perfect match.

    A relaxing city indeed. Although somehow, our entire stay there was greyer and wetter than our 2 weeks in the U.K. ☂️ Our luck was bound to run out, though.

    Love Porto, the last time I went was during COVID restrictions, which was a nightmare for travelling with all the COVID tests you had to take to get there and back. it was made even worse when my football team (Man City) lost in the champions league final there, I was glad to get home!

    That's reassuring to hear, actually (we're still shocked anyone wants to watch these at all, much less MORE). There's almost always footage left on the cutting room floor, so we'll look into bumping up the runtime where we can. 🙂

    @@qlctravels As long as you don't end up worrying about having enough recordings and feel the need to record more. If you feel you can add more without necessarily doing more filming, then fine. The length to me on this one seems fine and actually so far has been a decent indicator that you've done what you wanted whilst also noting there was more to see and do. But yeah, if you've been more inclined to leave things out for keeping running time down, I think you could do 20-25 mins without it being too long. Come to think of it, I did think one or two earlier vids were a tad short; so perhaps 15-20 mins maybe the ideal(?).

    Yeah, there didn't seem to be much in the way of coasters in Porto... Although the wet, sloping streets were practically water slides at times, if that counts.

    Hi, love your videos. By now you will have realised that the Euro is making life easier. In 1998 I was working in Italy so I was dealing with Lira. Flying home one weekend I had to change in Paris to get to Cardiff, so added Francs to my pocket. Getting back to Milan I had to change in Brussels, so Belgian Francs to my loaded pockets. Another trip home and my return was via Amsterdam soi now added Dutch Gilders to my pocket. I ended up keeping my coins in the old 35mm film canisters. Saying the basic hello, please, thank you, how much?, can I have a receipt? In local languages gets complicated, Euro doesn’t help then.

  • @qlctravels

    Oh yes, the Euro has been SO nice. As soon as we got to Dublin, we didn't have to think about currency again until Prague about 7 weeks later. (And technically, using a card for almost everything meant we didn't even have to fiddle with Korunas, or Francs in Switzerland.) We can't imagine having to go through the hassle you did in the pre-Euro days.

    In 1991 JK Rowling visited the bookshop ( when living and working as an English teacher in Porto ) and it’s said that’s what inspired the interiors of Hogwarts and Flourish & Blotts the wizards shop.

    Indeed! We were in Bern about 2 weeks ago and loved it! Some of the most breathtaking views (if not THE most breathtaking) came from our time there. Standing atop the Gurten and seeing the Alps was one of those "Is this real life?" moments. 🏔️😍 We literally sat up there for hours just staring at them. Sadly some unforeseen circumstances forced us to drop Zurich from our route a few weeks prior, but our small taste of Switzerland was enough to convince us we need to make a return journey.

    Are you feeling a little frightened while walking in narrow alleys not knowing where you are? Is it safe to walk around the streets at night in Porto?

  • @qlctravels

    @qlctravels

    6 ай бұрын

    We've had cities on this trip that didn't feel safe to walk around, but we felt (mostly) fine in Porto. That said, however, it was the first place we encountered aggressive begging, with one woman getting upset that we didn't give her money and trying to argue instead of simply moving on. So that put a bit of a damper on the city for us.
