There is a parameter on our Okuma lathe that stops it from pumping oil when the machine is powered up but not moving. Our tech did it for us. Might be something to look into.

how big is that sump? 100 gallons or so?

I think it's 60, at most 75. I have to put at least 5 gallons in a week due to evaporation even if we don't use it more if we do.
