Imagine being a professional singer and given this song to perform for the first time. They must have thought they'd died and gone to Heaven. Rodgers and Hamerstein's brilliance. What a wonderful legacy they left. Why can't they write songs like this today?

To be fair this is musical theater which tends to sound different from whatever's playing on the radio and pretty much always has been at least somewhat different. Since musicals don't get as famous as often now we don't hear songs like this very often

I can see why this is the favourite of Queen Elizabeth. It opened in the spring of 1943, when the war in Europe was at its lowest ebb, and it was like a well needed ray of sunshine. Since it was such an immense hit, Rodgers and Hammerstein always donated a block of seats to the American soldiers on their way to Europe to remind them of what they were fighting for: "We know we belong to the land/ And the land we belong to is grand!"

THey would play almost all the melodies of the sixties on their Guitars. Having listened to such music in what was once a small village in a remote corner of India and now speaking about it to someone who is from that place itself is a good feeling. +Joey Jamison A song written on the Upper West Side of Manhattan by two Jewish guys who would probably be lynched by the hillbillies in Oklahoma. itsjust me Oscar Greely Clendenning Hammerstein II was an Episcopalian and he raised his kids in that religion. Richard Rodgers was an atheist. But in any case, it's pretty fucking narrow minded to just assume that everyone in Oklahoma was a raging anti-Semite dying to lynch every Jew they could get their hands on. In fact Jews have been part of Oklahoma history from the beginning of its territorial days. A number of early Jewish settlers married Native American women. Jew have been active in local and state politics, and many of the oldest oil fortunes in Oklahoma were made by Jews. They also have a long history of philanthropy in the state. Anti-Semitism is everywhere, so I don't doubt that there were Jews who weren't always welcomed with open arms, but there is not a single recorded case of a Jew being lynched in Oklahoma. Blacks, Indians & white people accused of crimes? Yes. Jews ? No.

Little known fact...By the time Oklahoma was made Gordon and Shirley Jones had performed together a lot and despite both being married, were deeply in love. In the scene at 2:30, she loses it and tears up with the emotion, and had to look away. But being the pro she was, and with Gordon holding her chin to steady her trembling lips, they finished the number. It was so moving that the cast insisted that the scene was not redone. Shirley Jones has said this was the most important scene of her career.

What an interesting piece of trivia regarding this particular scene, which I thought was such a romantic gesture between two newlyweds, not realizing it was real-life emotions between Shirley Jones and Gordon MaRrae. Their beautiful chemistry was later reunited in "Carousel".

For what it’s worth (I know this comment is two years old, but…) it is not entirely true. Shirley didn’t marry her first husband until 1956, and this movie was made in 1955. Gordon was married to his wife, Sheila, but Shirley was not married. Doesn’t mean the rest of the comment isn’t true-they could very well have been in love and she was upset about it all ending, just that she was not married at the time. That all being said, I have literally wondered my whole life about that little moment, because it did not look scripted and that little nod her gives her seemed like such a private moment between them, so I would not be at all shocked to learn that their unrequited love was the reason for such a moment happening in the film.

Gordon McCrea will always own the character of Curly to me. He put his stamp on so many characters in musicals in the 40s & 50s. I think most of the Rogers & Hammerstein shows and others like On Moonlight Bay with Doris Day. Shirley Jones seemed to be the go to actor/singer at the time too. As they were in Carousel together. And she wound up in Music Man with comparable Robert Preston and tiny Ron Howard.

Nope. This is my favorite R&H musical. Seen it on stage many times. I do prefer Gordon as Billy in Carousel. In the 1980s I saw John Raitt one year in this the following year in Carousel. The best two performances ever. Made me love musicals. I still recall The Solilquey to this day,
This happy song delivers your daily dose of 'feel good' vibes. You're welcome 😊

We had to learn this song in pre-k (because I'm from Oklahoma) and I've thought the lyric was "Oklahoma every night, my honey lemon eye" for my entire life until this point
i grew up in ardmore oklahoma, and for all the five years of elementary school, every monday morning my school would all gather in the gym and we would sing this, sing the star spangled banner, say the national pledge, and the state pledge. and the rest of the week, someone would come over the intercom and make us say the national and state pledges. lord have mercy.

I love Oklahoma! I miss it tremendously! From Tennessee originally but I have always felt I am a native son of Oklahoma!
I do remember when you walked down a street in NYC people smiled and I remember when public people would join in a song like "When the Saints Go Marching In."
Anybody else from Oklahoma forced to learn this song in elementary school?!?!?

My pop Warner team would just keep chanting the part where they say "Oklahoma" before we would do Oklahoma Drills. When I was younger that chant scared be to death. It was my biggest fear. Six years later I'm still playing football and one of the best on my high school team. That chant and hearing it on here, still sends chills and a little fear down my spine...
Sung this in 2nd grade with my class for a show, I’m now in 8th grade and just found this....brings back memories my line was “plenty of room to swing a rope”
Ya' gotta love the musical and the state.

I lived in Oklahoma for a little bit when I was a baby and now I'm in ny 40s never been there again but i don't know why i hope one day to live there again. Amazing song. The Broadway revival a few years ago was excellent.
I love this song!
Legend are watching after 10 years
I love this song and it the queens favorite song!
I'm from the Big Apple, but I still sing along!
We did this for my school musical back in 2017 and it is just one of my favourite memories because we all grew real close. The teachers did great work with us and our director was really great. Especially with pointers. The backstage crew had to watch the whole musical 50 times over while we practiced in the other room.

+Joey Jamison A song written on the Upper West Side of Manhattan by two Jewish guys who would probably be lynched by the hillbillies in Oklahoma. Just like the Bible thumpers would be shocked to find out that two of their favorite Christian songs (White Christmas and Easter Parade) were written by a Jewish guy from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. lol

+itsjust me The funniest part is that it's true! (actually Oscar Hammerstein was a Christian, but I think he converted. It's still great music, no matter who wrote it.)

itsjust me Oscar Greely Clendenning Hammerstein II was an Episcopalian and he raised his kids in that religion. Yes. Jews ? No.

Joey Jamison And only state song originated from a Broadway show
Little known fact...By the time Oklahoma was made Gordon and Shirley Jones had performed together a lot and despite both being married, were deeply in love.

Can't stop replaying!
it's magical
