I appreciate the doc link. It says it may be used for, among many topics, "comparative religion." OK, I would love to see the teacher who whips out other sacred texts from around the world for comparative purposes... BTW I took Bible Lit in high school as a choice between various junior year literature classes options. So it's not like one can't learn "from" the Bible in public schools... maybe just in Godless lefty CA where I'm born and raised, we're just too conservative, right? Thanks for sharing, Rev.

@@marylamb7707 because they believe in christian nationalism which is an idea of a strong man, beat your enemies, subjugate those into whatever doctrine you believe. This is similar to the idea that the Jewish people had as an idea of who the savior would be. The Jewish people of that time thought that Christ was going to be a leader that would get them out of the Roman rule. That he would come in and destroy the Romans. When you start listening to the christian nationalists, it almost has that same feel, fighting against some hidden enemy using whatever weapon that lays at their feet. But if you look at the actual bible, you see Christ not using any weapon. Christ told them this "feed the poor, welcome the stranger, sell all you have, and follow me".

As an Oklahoman and a follower of Christ, I have to say that not all of us here are fans of Mr. Walters and his foolishness. If he wants students to understand the "core values" and "historic context" of our country, they should read the Constitution. I wonder if Mr. Walters has read it. Using faith and spirituality to gain earthly political power is one of the most sacreligious acts I can imagine, the very antithesis of what Jesus taught.

In fact I think all of the current Supreme Court Justices, could benefit from that.

Couple of notes here. 1. The revolution was not fought o escape the church of England. There were and are plenty of Anglicans in the US. It was fought to escape the political power and tyranny of England. 2. The establishment clause is only applicable to the federal government, not state or local governments. As a matter of fact, many of the colonies were separated on largely religious means, some being predominantly Catholic, some Quakers, some Baptist. Many of these colonies, upon winning freedom from the crown and achieving statehood, instituted religious tests, aligning with the predominant religious beliefs for that state, that must be passed in order to attain public office.

When I was a child I went to church with my paternal grandmother and my maternal aunt. Both were Pentecostal holiness, but their churches were very different. When I was 13 I decided to go to a baptist church where some of my friends went around the block from where I lived. My grandmother hit the roof and told me I would burn in the fires of hell if I went to the Baptist church. I live in the southern US. I don’t think my grandmother would be happy with any bible teaching unless it was here version and I will say my grandmother had a very warped sense of religion. She would pray with such zeal for the death and destruction of people that she did not agree with or was angry with. She and the deacons in the Baptist church I went to are the major reason I don’t attend church. I believe in God and Jesus and I pray to them, but I don’t do it in a church. If you ram craziness down a person’s throat enough, they want nothing to do with it.

I also gave up on the church because of similar things and many tries, but I NEVER gave up on God. And he never gave up on me. This site, this rev? I can handle, and it is now my church. My faith? These things always backfire and, when they do, the people who cheered them on are then the most vocal critics.

Thanks for your thoughts. I live in Oklahoma. Ryan Walters is beholden to those who want to destroy the public school system, among other things. It's been building down for years. Part of the plan is stuff like this and "Parental Choice" : Every parent should be given money to home school or send their children to a private school. Currently one has to apply for The Parental Choice Tax Credit program which has reached the $150 million limit for 2024. There may also the religious charter school route that will be run up to the SCOTUS. Eventually there will be less to no money left for true public schools. It is mind boggling what goes on & how many people vote, if they vote at all, against their own best interests. Ryan Walters won the State Superintendent's office by 57%. He took his win as a mandate. In 2022, Walters ran on a platform of fighting "woke ideology," banning books from school libraries, getting rid of "radical leftists", “liberal indoctrination,” critical race theory, critical thinking, transgender identities and diversity, equity & inclusion in general. He's only doing what the people want him to get done. He will probably be the next governor. Twice as many registered Repubs as Dems here & with straight party voting ballots you only have to make one check. This is a land of "Ignorance is bliss" & the people want to keep it that way... easier to force feed all the lies & misinformation, to follow, to be ruled. I used to say God help us. Now I don't know where any God is in all of this especially the state's Christian Nationalist one. Now, I pray to find a way, a place that is not here. I don't feel that I'm isolated, or alone. There just are not enough of us left to make a difference. Did not mean to launch into these many words. I wrote them; they're staying. I hate typing & writing. thanks for reading to this point.

First, thank you for posting this message. Definitely important to have this conversation. My concern is that this may start the prosecution of true believers, while the lukewarm fanatics will denounce the Faith to save their own lives... All-in-all, the LORD is in control. To anyone who may comes across this little rant of mine; stay blessed.

According to NPR, the person who put this into action has (somewhat) clarified how the law should be put into effect. It's supposed to be used in literature and history classes only and from grades 5-12, with the purpose of showing how Christianity has influenced great literature, and American history and culture. My first question was the same as yours, from which Bible will they teach? How about teaching from the Jefferson Bible. Old Thomas Jefferson was noted for ripping up his Bible and removing passages he didn't like.

Rev Ed - as so often, thank you for your expressive thoughts. I am profoundly an atheist but feel great kinship with your spirit, which seems to me truly Christian (as I feel about Jimmy Carter)y. I appreciate the impulses of faith and spirituality when they are positive and supportive to an individual and to humanity. IMNSHO, Education must be utterly secular and based on reason, established knowledge, history, science, literature & do its best to equip each person to explore and discover their relationships to reality and the universe. And perhaps more importantly, equip & encourage everyone’s BS detector to see through the lies & fallacies peddled by advertisers, politicians & from pulpits…. all the best from a Maritimer now far away.

i love all your what-ifs - exactly. the thing about the bible is that it's all, ALL, in there, all ways all things can be handled (imo you need God to clarify what's what to your heart). so which is it: if you're not for us you're against us, or if you're not against us you're for us? and then there's the risk of mirroring the behavior of other religions which might be modeling education-based-on-their-scripture to justify blowing up the "infidel." smh. bless you reverend ed.

My favorite parts of the Bible are the book of numbers, chapter 5, versus 11 - 31! That's where God gives a priest instructions on how to perform an abortion! Then there's the part on Sodom and Gomorrah being destroyed because of their ill-treatment of the poor, not for being gay!!

Remember, Lot wanted to pass his daughters over to the crowd. Later on, Lot’s daughters got him drunk and had nonconsensual relations with him and bore his children. There’s also the story of a bear mauling children because they laughed at a bald man. (2 Kings 2:23-25). There’s the story of a man who gave one of his concubines to the men of the city. She was gang r@ped. She died. Her body was divided into pieces and passed out to the tribes of Israel.(Judges 19-21) It bothers me that too many people have not read the entire Bible, yet they want it taught in schools. I have not read the entire Bible. I found out this year about the Bible story of the concubine.

@@karenm7857 I wish they did that here in Wisconsin. To add insult to injury, the per pupil funding stays with the school even if the student gets kicked out. The student only has to remain in the religious school through the third Friday of the new school year. Usually it’s behavior related and the kids end up coming back to the local public school district with NONE of the prorated money the religious school originally received. Thus putting financial burden on the public school and the religious school gets to pocket the money.

I'd love to see the cultural fallout of this. Not the bloodshed and religious war, but I mean like if they really called for Every Saturday being a day where you could do nothing, not even prepare food, or do anything. Forgive debts, etc. There are TONS of obscure laws in the bible, which our society wouldn't be able to adapt to because we have religious freedom and most Christians don't read the entirety of the bible.

This reminds me of the abolishing of Roe v Wade, they did not take into account pregnancy complications. Such as partial miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, children who are victims of rape or incest, women bleeding out, women becoming septic, so now there are woman and girls dying from lack of care, women being turn away from a hospital because they don't want to be in legal jeopardy if they treat a woman and the treatment needed to save her is a therapeutic abortion. This mix of religion and government is so very wrong and unconstitutional, expecting teachers who may or may not be Christians, who may or may not even know what the Bible says because they are of a different religion, or no religion at all. What are they going to do include the Bible in the curriculum to tell teachers what Bible to use, what "historical" lessons they can teach. If Jesus showed up today, he would be considered a radical liberal and dismissed by the GOP. What is going on, this is all so insane. Thanks for your view point as a Christian priest Rev Ed, please pray for America, we are in trouble.
