Okanagan Lavender Gardening Tip: How to Winterize Lavender in Marginal Areas

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It can be difficult to keep lavender alive in growing zones less than 5, but we have a few tips for how you can winterize your plants and give them the best chance over the colder months. Plant your lavender in a sheltered, south facing location with a windbreak and apply a generous layer of mulch around the outside. If the plant are small, you can even try putting a cardboard box around them for extra protection!

OMG girl .. For the last 2 months, I bet I've watched, and google searched a 3 million sites about this.. lol Either they don't reply back. I've got told to toss them and get new ones next year.. 😡🤬 I put way to much love into these. I cant toss. I have to at least try .. Here is my little story. In June I bought 4 - 2" Spanish Lavender seedlings . My first time with Lavender They are in small fabric bags. They grew to 10-12" healthy plants. They didn't flower. I prune them down last week. I babied them all summer 😊 Last night I got a idea. I just found your video that had my idea 😅😂 I'm form Toronto Canada. I have a Florida room attached to the side of my house. The 3 walls are all windows. It's not insulated. It will keep bad weather off them. NOW I no , Spanish Lavender will be tricky. My thought was. If I put the 4 small bags into a empty Big fabric bag. Stuff it with leaves and grass .( I do know that makes heat.) And keep it in the room. Do you think that will maybe keep them alive? You answered 1 of my questions. That was , do I fill the big bag right up over the plants with leaves? You filled the box over that plant. ✔️ I'm confused because they say they need light Q-2 .. Am I trying to keep the roots from freezing ? Or the whole plants from freezing? I know gardening is about learning and failures.. This year I learned not to get Spanish Lavender again 😂😅😂😅 Thank you for this video. Cheers

I purchased 13 Lavandula plants in the late fall. They were really cheap.90% off. I planted them in my perennial garden. A sunny area. I did mulch the plants after planting and put some 2x2 stakes into the ground with burlap over the stakes and plants with rocks to hold down the burlap. I am in Barrie Ontario zone 6. I am hoping that will allow the plants to overwinter and survive the winter. Your idea on leaves sound good I can always remove the burlap and place leaves on top of the plants then replace the burlap.

I’m up in Sudbury, and over the years, have planted various varieties of lavender, never did any winterisation, and all had died but one. It’s about 6-7 years old, now, and blooms like crazy. I wish I could tell you which variety it is. I’m going to try planting some cuttings from it this fall when I prune it. I didn’t prune it last fall, and had the most blooms, ever, this year. It’s simply stunning this year. Don’t give up on lavender. Maybe, it’s your soil? The spot my lavender is in only gets a few hours of the morning sun. The soil is very sandy, and it receives very little rain, because the rain almost always comes from the other direction, and the eaves cover that garden. I don’t get it, lol? I’m guessing that lavender doesn’t like rich soil, not a lot of water, and not too much direct sunlight. At least, that’s how my plant seems to like it. Who😅 would’ve guessed? And in growing zone 4, to-boot, without any cover in the winter.

When is the time to do this? Just before the frost warnings start or earlier? And when is the time to take it back off so it's not too wet? (I'm in Edmonton) TIA

So does putting mulch around the base run the risk of root rot for newly planted lavender?

I have the phenominal variety lavender, I have a total of 5 plants. Apparently they do not dieback in winter. I live in central Minnesota and I just put a big bag of pine bark on top of each one and flattened out the center of the pile so it's not a pyramid, is this a good way to winterize lavender? Or should I remove the pine bark and do what you did? The pine bark mulch is kind of heavy and it sort of crushes the plants.

I’ve heard that you should wait until after the first frost to cover your lavender. Otherwise, it will get too warm, and rot.

You're right - everything is relative! Compared to marginal growing zones like the prairies where temperatures can drop to -40 degrees Celsius, our Okanagan winters of -5 to -10 aren't so bad :)

Hi Den, you'll want to do your best to protect the root system of your lavender, as that's the area most at risk of winter damage when in planters. Is there the option of bringing them inside a garage over the winter? I'd suggest visiting your local garden centre - they would likely have the best advice specific to overwintering plants in your area of the country. Best of luck!
