The next song on this album is called Bottom. Great song. The only song in their whole discography featuring another vocalist. Henry Rollins doing a spoken word. Its a powerhouse

H. -Tool. It's my favorite song by them and is about Maynard and his struggles with his abuse and how he has a son whom Maynard would never wish that upon him and how Maynard changes his outlook on life because of and for his son. At least that's what I take from it. They never performed it live or if they did, it was less than a handful of times. It's a very personal song to him just like the songs about his mom

@@samthompson2269 actually, it's not about that at all. It's about having children. Maynard's son's middle name is H. and he has said in repeated interviews that it is about having children and the evils they will face in life. Having said that, the lyrics could definitely be construed as any drug addiction.
Love early angry passionate Maynard. Had so much punch on his vocals
If I'm not mistaken, this was TOOL's first hit. Way back in 1992 or 93 or whatever. I literally remember playing this song for my neighbor. I was 18 at the time, living on my own in an apartment building, and dude was 36. He sat there and listened to it and said: THIS CHANGES THE GAME. Maybe you had to be there, but seriously... There was nothing like this back then.

I think Corrosion of Conformity and Helmet had a sound reminiscent of early Tool. I heard Sober on the radio; I was right by the Meadows Mall in Vegas, and I immediately bought the CD.
At about 8:39, you mentioned Justin was doing his thing, but Justin wasn't a member of Tool when this album was recorded. Paul D'Amour played bass for the band before Justin joined as they began recording Ænema. In an interview, Justin said he created the riff for 46 and 2 waiting for the plane from England to LA right before his audition for the band.

BTW, that is Paul D'Amour on bass. He was the OG bassist for Tool. Justin came in a little later.
Maynard’s vocals on this album are something special.
Sonically this is one of my favorites from Tool, and with a catalog like they have, that says a lot. Even though the subject matter is taboo, Maynard kills the lyrics. Thanks for giving it a chance✌️♥️
It’s such a strong argument against the cycle of abuse and rising above it for the sake of generations

Have you checked out any Deftones yet? Knife Party, Passenger ft. Maynard, Around the Fur, Digital Bath, 7 Words, You've Seen The Butcher.

This was the album that introduced me to Tool & I kid you not i listened it 10 times a day for like 3-4 months I suggest Crawl Away as the bass playing by Paul D'ʻAmour is spectacular. FYI he was the bass player during this album not Justin

Indeed, "release" 😨🫢
@8:40 - not Justin - this was before him…way back in 1993…first CD I ever bought, on the first trip I ever made in my own car to the record store, simply because the cover was intriguing. That’s it. I bought it because the cover looked different. The big poster in the store certainly didn’t hurt. Who knows what small things will shape them?
I said to myself the last video I wanted of the reflection tool video. " Wow, this guy is really good and fluent on the mic. I like this dude." And the first thing you said was you dont like being on the mic and on camera 😂
I LOVE TOOL, I have since I first heard them in the early 90's. I've seen them live multiple times, but the last time was about 5 years ago in NOLA, that's when I came to the conclusion that I can't afford to go to concerts anymore. I was very expensive, on top of the very expensive ticket cost.
You should know that TOOL also composed a song with a "normal" structure, with acoustic guitar, tempo in 4/4, with introduction, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro. Obviously the lyrics are not quite as normal and is absolutely comical, as you can guess from the title. The song I'm talking about is a hidden track on the CD called "Maynard's Dick". I'm curious to see what you think about it .

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty confident they switched up the meter near the end, not the time signature.
Prison movies: You mentioned Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile... You referenced Alcatraz and Con Air. Carry on brother! Let's always challenge ourselves!
"The Rock" was the Connery/Cage movie.. and of course don't forget about all of the "Penitentiary" movies from the 70's and 80's!

I really love the music video to this, maybe my favorite out of em all. It really adds a whole new dimension to this.
This track lit my ears on fire in the 90s and the video was utterly captivating. They reset the bar for music and nobody has ever topped it for me personally.
I believe what you were looking for is Papillon and Cool Hand Luke. Awesome films.
One of the best albums ever made. Thanks for reviewing this song!
Stop the cycle of abuse Happened to me for years Help is out there. I was abused as a child. We can speak, type, relay. Speak, understand. Get help, help others Through our actions we speak. Speak true and strong.
How cool is it that you’ve discovered a strength through trying to work on “weaknesses?” You’re good at this! We all enjoy your choices and reactions - you’re easy and fun to listen to, you give honest opinions and interpretations, and you’re relatable. I have anxiety and panic disorders, myself, and I love to sing. Only in my 30’s have I started to feel more comfortable performing in public, and I keep pushing myself because I know it’s worthwhile. I’m so glad this has been a positive experience overall for you!
Try jamming out to JAMBI!!! It took me more listens than other songs on 10,000 days, but seeing them in Atlantic City for that tour and that was their opening song…everyone was wide eyed and gaping mouths leading to killer head banging!! Another favorite!!!

I've been a subscriber since you were around 100. This entire album, and I stress(entire) album is a must listen.
Paul D'Amour was the original bassist on Opiate, Undertow and a couple Ænema tracks. You can tell the difference in style as Paul was more slappy and groovy while Justin is more technical yet artistic and atmospheric. If you want to deep dive you should do a Peach (Justin's band) reaction and then the live Tool cover of You Lied off Salival.
You really should have started from the first album. But here we are, I'm glad you're here. This music changed, formed my life. Dood! You speak well and I'm glad you decided to challenge you shit.

I have always felt the term “Prison Sex” used in this way is referring to any type of sexual abuse is it’s own prison. A creative way to subvert your expectations for a new listener. They assume it’s referring to what’s implied until you read the lyrics.
