Oil Temp Gauge w/Torque Pro - Motorvate’s DIY Garage Quick Tip #2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Most Nissan and Infiniti vehicles don’t have an engine oil temperature gauge.
This video will show you how to to create a custom PID or sensor to display the engine oil temperature in less than 3 minutes.
All you need is a cheap OBD scanner and the Android app “Torque Pro”.
** NOTE: This will not work with free version of Torque Lite **
This should work on every Nissan and Infiniti made since 2008 with an engine that has an oil temperature sensor.
Some examples include:
• All years: 370z, Q50, Q40, G37, M37, FX37 or anything with the 3.7 litre V6 (VQ37VHR)
• 2008 and up 3.5 litre V6 350z (Rear wheel drive with VQ35HR)
• 2008 and up Altima, Maxima, 3.5 litre V6 (Front wheel drive with VQ35DE)
• Frontier with QR25DE
• 2013 - 2019 Sentra with 1.8 litre MRA8DE
• Juke

    Hey nemisans13, Most Nissan/Infiniti vehicles don't have an oil pressure sensor, so it doesn't exist. You oil temp is fine.... 212F is typical and helps to burn off any condensation in the oil from short drives. If your oil temp gets around 250F - 260F then it is getting a little too hot. You might want to edit the PID and change the maximum to 260F.

    Hey GeePeeZee, On the G37/370Z (or any VQ37VHR engine) the oil temperature sensor is located close to the oil filter and is brass coloured. Also, the Infiniti Advanced plugin uses the same sensor, but they call it the "VVEL Oil temp". I thought "Engine Oil Temperature" is easier to understand.

    Doesn't work for me on Car Scanner. 06 350z Rev Up Manual, I know I have an oil temp sensor. It either shows nothing or the app crashes. EDIT: saw a comment down below of a guy with an 06 G35 and you mentioned our ECU's use the ISO-9141 protocol. Would you happen to know the header for that? Edit 2: there's a wiki article that has standard PIDs under $01, one of which is oil temp (5C). Would I still use the same start and stop diagnostics commands that you have here if I can't use the CAN bus protocol you're using here.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    5 ай бұрын

    This is an excellent question that I don't know the answer to. :( What is shown in the video should work for any 2008 + Nissan/Infiniti engine that has an oil temp sensor, as CAN bus is used for diagnostics. However, for anything 2007 or older, it uses a different protocol (ISO-9141) and I don't have any way of researching or testing that. Before I found mode $22 oil temp, I made a "Y cable" and tapped into the factory oil temp sensor. Then I used an Arduino Uno/Nano to convert the voltage to engine oil temp. It worked well, but once I found engine oil temp on the CAN bus (car's network) I stopped using it. Unfortunately for you, Nissan didn't put engine oil temp on the CAN BUS until 2009/2010.

    This is a great example of how Torque can be your best friend :) I have a Lancer 1.8 DiD 150 hp 2011and would love to see my particular filter differential pressure. It has a value in the system, which can be read on a OBD reader specific for the car - the value is in pascal. Searching high and low, I have not been able to find any method (that I understand...) on howto make a PID for this. From where have you found your values and how to set the PID up? Do you have a good link to learn how to understand the method...?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Henning Sørensen, Items like particulate filter pressure are an "enhanced PID" and use a different method to see the value of the sensor. (OBD Service mode $22) Generally, finding the extended PID is difficult as they are not widely documented. Also, the extended PIDs are different for each manufacturer and sometimes different for different models from the same manufacturer. The only thing I can recommend is to keep searching the internet... maybe someone will figure it out.

You need to find this out before going any further. The older German cars use a proprietary protocol and more than likely only the factory scan tool can show you oil temp. (as far as I know....) Maybe ask around in the AMG forums or Facebook groups - they may have the information you need. - Good luck!

    How do I find the PID sensor code to get engine oil temperature for a 2005 Scion xB? How do I get a list of PID for the available sensors for the xB?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    For engine oil temp, you first need to make sure your engine has an engine oil temp sensor. I don't think the xB does have one, as Rockauto doesn't show a oil temp sensor for a 05 xB, so that info is not available (However, sometimes the oil temp is calculated) For the list of all extended PIDs, search for them online, or reverse engineer them yourself, which is not quick or easy. It took me about 60 hours of research and testing to get engine oil temp from my G37. For an easy option, look into OBD Fusion $20 Enhanced Diagnostics for 96 - 2021 Toyota vehicles: www.obdsoftware.net/software/obdfusion

    The engine coolant temp should increase at a much faster rate, until the thermostat opens up, then it should be about the same temp around 85C 185F. If they are always the same, then the PID is probably incorrect. The engine coolant temp PID is a standard one, and should be available in Torque Pro. If you want to manually it look here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBD-II_PIDs#Service_01_PID_00 PID 05 is the engine coolant temp. to use it, just send 01 05 (request mode 01, PID 5) and the number that is returned is the engine temp BUT you need to subtract 40 to get temp in degrees C. I don't have anything for the automatic trans temp :(

    Just because the SAE defines a PID, doesn't mean the manufacture needs to implement it... and as you have seen, Nissan didn't implement 01 A4. Using enhanced diagnostics, I think you should be able to get the current gear ratio, but since I don't have a Armada, I can't test that :(

    Hey Marcin Adamczyk, Nope :( Each manufacturer defines the codes and sensors (PIDs) that can be viewed through the OBD port. The engine in your car (M54, I think) doesn't have an oil pressure sensor, so it is not possible to view the oil pressure through the OBD port. If you want oil pressure, you will need an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. Through DIS, INPA, BMW Scanner, etc you can view the oil temperature, through the OBD port. MAybe check and see if the Carly app (www.mycarly.com/en/app/bmw/) can show oil temp???

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey DeathDealerHype, Excellent question! Knowing the oil temperature tells you: (1) When the engine is fully warmed up. It can take 10-15 minutes longer for the oil temperature to equal the engine coolant temp when fully warmed up (around 85C, 185F) (2) How hard your engine is working. Nissan/Infiniti's 3.7 litre V6 has VVEL, which partly controls the throttle by changing how much the vales lift/open. Under full throttle, the oil heats up VERY quickly and if it exceeds 126C / 260F the ECU reduces engine power to prevent increased engine wear. So yes, this is useful to people with a heavy foot or for anyone who races. Also it is fun for "information junkies" like me. :)

    Hey charles corbin, No it won't. The code for oil temp is specific to Nissan/Infiniti engines. Each manufacture uses their own code for different sensors. To figure out IF you can get to work on a RX-8 you need to find out if the engine has an oil temperature sensor from the factory. No oil temp sensor means it can't be done using an app. If it does have n oil temp sensor, then you need to figure out what PID to use which can be VERY difficult to find. I don't have a listing in my database of Mazda codes. I think your best option is aftermarket gauges.

All 2008 model are required to support the CAN bus protocol. This means your ECU only supports the OBD services from $01 to $09. Your entry of 01 05 (engine coolant temp) uses mode $01. The oil temp PID in the video uses mode $22, which your ECU doesn't support as requires the CAN bus protocol.

    Hey Fightbird2013, Well.... that is interesting. The only extended PID code I have for Nissan/Infiniti engine oil temp is the one shown in the video. As you know, these codes are difficult to find and sometimes the manufacturer changes them :( One option is the "Advanced EX for NISSAN" plug in for Torque. For about $7 is should give you oil temp and a few other items.

    I spent a few hours researching why it isn't working for some. It looks like this should work with any 2008 and up engine that has an oil temperature sensor. I could not get it to work on a 2007 G35 (with VQ35HR). This is because the 2007 ECU ignores the oil temp request. I would expect the same result for a 2007 350Z. I don't have access to test it on a 2008 350Z or G35, but it should work. Technical Details why 2007 HRs don't connect. When Torque connects to the 07 HR ECU, it uses the ISO 9141-2 (K-line) protocol. The 22 111F command needs to be sent to the CAN bus using the ISO 15765-4 CAN protocol. Torque Pro can't switch to the CAN network and sends the CAN 22 111F command to the K-line / ISO 9141-2 protocol, where it is ignored. Starting in 2008, all cars sold in North America must use the ISO 15765-4 CAN protocol for OBD. Since Torque Pro doesn't need to switch protocols, it should work. Anyways, that's my theory.

    Hey Evo 2, You might want to do some research to see if you engine has an oil temperature sensor. Not every engine does. If it doesn't have one, there won't be a PID for it. This may explain why I couldn't find anything searching online. In my PID databse, I don't have anything for Honda. Most of that has to do with that I don't own a Honda, so I don't spend a lot of time searching. Good luck!

I'm monitoring as I see see very minimal metal in my oil so I'm using cheap oil to flush and monitor. Is there a way to change the calculations so it can measure in Fahrenheit instead of Celsius? How are things going with the crank case pressures? Myg37 user.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    Hey Oscar Del Toro, You oil temps look good, but don't worry if they go higher in the summer. Yesterday I went for a 1 hour drive on the highway and the G37 oil temp was just over 90C. Oil temps in the 90-100C range are good, as this ensures any water vapour in the crankcase or oil will be removed. Did you know....For every gallon of gas burned, almost a gallon of water is created by the chemical reaction? I didn't until recently and that is why the 90-100C oil temps are important! To have the oil temp in Fahrenheit, just change it to "(A-50) x 1.8 + 32" The " x 1.8 + 32" is the typical conversion factor to convert C to F. As for the crankcase pressure research, there has been a lot of progress! I built a new data logger that samples the crankcase pressure 2,000 times per second, from 5 different sensors (to make sure the recorded pressures are accurate) which are located in two different locations. The new data logger is working well and capturing consistent data. I have converted my PCV system to an "open" system and did one short test at idle to collect the first point of data. On the next weekend with outside temperatures above freezing, I will capture a few wide open throttle runs with and with out the PCV system, and then start the analysis. The final results will take some time as it is important to me to make sure the sensors, data logger and analysis are as accurate as possible.

    @@MotorvateDIY that's a very interesting perspective as I did not factor that. I want to start experimenting with different weights and synthetics and explore Torque as I'm in love with the app. (A-50) x 1.8 +32 typed just like that is giving me a syntax error, it's possible the spaces between symbols could be causing this etc. I realized crankcase video will be extremely insightful and needs to be thorough as it will be a hit but for it you need to have the right data which takes time. Thanks again.

    Hey Oscar Del Toro, My fault... I typed "x" for multiply and not "*" Try this: (A-50) * 1.8 +32 I like what you are going to be testing, but keep in mind the engine oil temperature is GREATLY impacted by engine RPM. (not load just RPM) The oil pump in the VQ37VHR is quite large and it pumps a lot of oil. BUT when you pump a lot of oil, it increases the temperature. Ever feel the heat from an air compressor tube that runs into the tank? They get very hot when the air is compressed, the sames goes for the oil temp. Good luck with the testing and please let me know where I can find your results.

    @MotorvateDIY

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey 김형직, I will explain the process to you.... but it is not a quick or easy process. I am not sure this will work for a vehicle from Europe, but this is what I do for Nissan vehicles. First you need to verify the engine has an oil temperature sensor and a exhaust temp sensor. If there isn't a physical sensor, the data doesn't exist. Use a cheap OBD scanner and Torque Pro. (here is a video from my other channel that sows the set up: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4SI0biHoc26aM4.html) Then install the "Torque Scan" plug in. With the engine running, run Torque scan. This will scan the extended PIDs also known as UDS mode 0x22. You should read up on the structure and use of UDS modes. Now the hard part. You need to sort through the test results and look for a number that is slowly increasing. Since the engine is warming up, the oil temp should be warming up and the number should be increasing. Once you have the 22 xxxx PID number and byte position (there are 8) you now need to figure out the formula. From what I have seen most temperatures add 40 or 50 to the data value. So, to get the temperature from the data you need to subtract 40 or 50. As you can guess, it can takes months to figure this out.

Based on testing on my car, the low oil pressure switch will turn on the light when the pressure is less than 5 PSI. Hey EDGGINFOOLS, Not every ECU needs the oil temperature. Most (not all) engines that have engine oil controlled variable valve timing, usually do have an oil temperature sensor. On some ECUs they have a "thermal model" and calculate the oil temperature based on start up temperature from engine coolant and/or air intake temperature, engine run time, engine RPM and engine load. This is also done to calculate the catalytic converter temperature.
