Oil Painting Mediums by Gamblin

Gamblin are passionate about crafting materials as they ought to be, not just as they have been. Their mission is to lead oil painting into the future, by making contemporary mediums that are true to historic working properties, yet safer and more permanent.
• Gamblin Oil Painting Medium Guide: www.gamblincolors.com/mediums/...
Painting mediums offer a great deal more than simply extending oil colours. Mediums modify the working properties of oil colour from the tube - from a fluid consistency for expressive mark making to a stiff paste for creating thick, crisp marks. Painting mediums also broaden the visual qualities of our colours - from increasing the transparency of paint layers, to creating a range of surface qualities, from high gloss to matte.

    How do you prevent Galkyd from drying out? I take a little bit out and put it in an air tight container and after a few days it develops a white sticky film on the top and everything has turned into jelly. This has happened many times to me as well as a few classmates of mine and it is extremely frustrating.

    In order to keep Galkyd from drying it needs to not be exposed to air. You'll still have air in and airtight container if it is not filled to the brim with Galkyd (unless you've created a vacuum in the container!). You might want to consider wrapping your Galkyd in cling wrap (cling film/cellophane wrap) prior to putting in an airtight container, or, you could put mix a little linseed oil in with it. Both these options should keep it more liquid for longer.

    If you are new, you don't need mediums to paint. Just use turpentine or gamsol to clean your brushes and thin early layers of paint. Use less the more you layer.

    Start with linseed oil. Really, there’s tons of vids about ratios, but truthfully, just start with a little and get a consistency you like, forget drying times for now.

    I am going to restretch a couple of my paintings I painted about 20 years ago and take them out of their stretch bars. They haven't been stretched since. Do I need any type of medium to apply to the painting or to the back of the painting to ease stretching? I don't know if I am making any sense.. Just thought to ask. Thank you

    H E L P anyone. Is my understanding correct? If I use the exact same amount of Walnut Alkyd Medium with each new layer of paint, I don't have to be concerned about following the fat over lean principle? I suppose because each of the previous layers are already almost dry chemically when touch dry? Is that true? That would make sense I suppose? I must understand this for sure before I use this medium and begin oil commissioned oil portraits, because they must absolutely be archival, and hopefully I can finish each one quickly. I'm trying to switch from acrylics to oils while having a fast turn around in sales. Thanks for any help.

    I feel like he said it backwards. If a medium is high viscosity wouldn't that cause it to retain brush strokes and low viscosity to level out?

  • @tiagodagostini

    @tiagodagostini

    2 жыл бұрын

    To be technical viscosity does not have a necessarily direct or indirect correlation to it. it is more about the change of structure while it dries/cures that rules that. If it shrinks it flatten out.
