Oil Paint Glaze Over a Charcoal Mule Deer Drawing
Really enjoyed drawing this one. Charcoal and oil paint on 40"x30" canvas. Mule deer are always a fun challenge. This was my first time drawing a doe and a buck together. Thanks for watching!

Amazing and beautiful
Gorgeous work. Hope to see more videos as they are very inspirational and informative. Have used graphite for a long time and going to attempt some charcoal paintings. The little I have done with charcoal, I’ve noticed a huge difference in the mediums. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and techniques. Subscribed. 😃
I’m so glad you posted this drawing/painting! This is one of my favorites of yours.
Amazing work! I would love to see you do some tutorials sometime. I just came across your channel and subscribed.
Do you still do a final seal when finished. If so do you still use the golden. or can you use that over oil ? Love your work. You have a true gift.

Yes, I still varnish it. But I use Gamblin Gamvar varnish over the oil paint glaze. Thank you!
Oh my gosh that’s beautiful Joel. There was texture on the canvas to start with….was that a gesso or white acrylic paint layer before you started the charcoal drawing?

Yes, I apply a couple layers of gesso first. Love the added texture. Thanks!
I started charcoal last month and it's really addictive. But Wow wow wow today finding your channel made me understand the potential of that medium !! I can only wish i could get half as good as you. Thanks a ton for sharing ! ♥️ I'm wondering, before applying the thinned oil paint, do you apply a fixative to the charcoal so it doesn't smudge ?
I’m doing a massive drawing that is set to take over 13 years. Any idea how I can safely store it as I’ll be packing it away every year until completion and it’s 1.5m wide. I can’t find anything online that can store it so thinking I need to make something? Any ideas please?
Is there a formula or ratio of oil paint to mineral spirits?

I don't have an exact ratio. Usually thicker than water, but thinner than pudding.
Another?your sketch is charcoal also? Or pencil! Do you use oil medium on that too? I will need to use acrylic because of allergies. You erased after the oil medium?

Yes, charcoal drawing. Sealed and then an oil paint glaze over the top. The oil paint dries slowly allowing me to wie it off to create the highlights. Thanks!
Can you PLEASE do a video of how your Studio is set up, and how you control and minimize the mess? Every time i do a picture the Charcoal goes everywhere. Any tips and advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I work with charcoal and I usually put a big canvas cloth under my work setup and then I can just pick it up and shake it off after I’m finished. I learned the hard way once when I tracked charcoal through the house on the carpet. I couldn’t get it out… 😂

Thank you. That's what I do but it seams to float through the air

@@kevinkbradshaw2239 Yeah, I am going to start wearing a mask. It’s crazy how much gets into the air.

It is messy. I just have a dedicated studio area where I try to contain it. The base board and floor by my easel is completely coated with charcoal. It's part of the job. But I used to work construction and this is cleaner by far. I do wear a mask when applying a lot of charcoal powder because of the particles, but I've adjusted my process to where I don't do that as often. I'll consider a video showing my space, but there's not a lot to it. Thanks!
