Do not use sand paper or emery cloth on the sparkplug tube. Use carb cleaner. You don't want it all scratched or reduced in size or it will leak again... also, put the new seals in the freezer so they shrink and you don't have to hammer them in.
@jennijun

Interesting idea about freezing the seals to shrink them. My concern would be that it would compromise the rubber which cracks at low temp.

A metal pick works much better when removing the gaskets. Flatheads will damage the gasket surface.

Always use a compression gauge before saying it's a head gasket unless your oil and water get mixed
Just pretend that you don’t see any oil.
One of my favorite mechanics thanks for making these videos.
In older videos of older engines with this oil problem, some guys pull the spark plug tubes out to seal them at the bottom, too. However the more recent videos on newer engines, mechanics do as you did, leaving the spark plug tubes in place, assuming the leak is at the seal on top. Can you tell us when you'd pay more attention to the tube seal at the bottom? The second question is the perennial one, which way do you decide to mount the seals? Can they go in upside down, and how do you know you got it right? Normally I put the spring inside, in deference to the principle that the higher pressure side should shut the seal. However some engines have significant crankcase vacuum, so wouldn't the seal position be opposite?
Just did the sparkplugs on a 14 WRX and noticed #3 was wet. Figured it was the seal so glad a lot of others are saying the same. Just H4 instead of V or I so this will be a fun job!
Bro you are da 💣 I have learned SO much watching you, thanks so very much for your tutorials. (John from California)

Hey I just did this same exact job to a Honda accord😏periodic maintenance is key👌cool video
Thanks for all the help. Always do a great job explaining. Please continue your great performance
I found oil in one sparl plug cylinder today on my 08 LS460. I proceeded to remove the exterior mounted seals to find cracks in all 8 of them. I'll pick up a set in the morning, blow out the oil into a rag (thanks to you) and ensure everything is dry before re installing new seals, plugs and coils. I don't see any reason (in my case) to remove the valve cover, as it's not leaking on either bank. Thanks for a sweet tip, a new sub.
Great job man, thank you for showing me what I needed to see.
You are so smart! Thank you for all your videos! You’ve saved my life so many times!
Thanks soooooooo much! You confirmed my problem. I was for SURE that my head gasket was blown. I was getting oil in the spark plug well but no coolant mixture. Thanks so very much!!!!!
Len is the best! 💯
Nice, you got everything covered. Thanks
Very helpful, I was trying to get those spark plug tube seals out for like 20 minutes and then it's like "GDI, now I gotta look this up with oil hands!" Very helpful, and minimal damage to the valve cover 🤷 it ain't pretty but it works.
Thank you for this excellent video. My 2004 Honda Odyessy was losing power, so I started to change spark plugs and found the spark plug Wells in back of engine only were full of oil. Now I am going to replace the gaskets of the rear valve cover to solve this problem. I personally believe the spark plug well tube grommets must've been installed backwards. I wished you had spent more time on the proper installation of those grommets. But thank you again.
2:57 that new seal doesn't look seated all the way in. Then using sandpaper on that tube w/o anything to prevent the abrasive particles falling into the engine... that made me cringe.
@rmark1083
3 жыл бұрын
What prevents your engine from creating abrasive particles from getting into your oil? I know the oil reduces friction but it doesn't stop it. Before the abrasive particles get trapped by the filter they're flowing around with your engine oil.

I saw the same thing. Also, when he took the seal out, he knock the flat screw driver in to separate the seal from the valve cover. I can see the damage on the cover. He should use a pick to take seal out without touching any metal.

After watching this I now know what my problem is! Thanx so much for the video of the info and fix!!!!
In my very short mechanical experience, I've noticed that Nissans are notorious for this problem. Had an 02' Sentra. Oil flooded the ignition coils. Currently have a 2010 Altima 2DR. Same problem. If your're looking at a used Nissan, make sure to check the coil chamber.
Nice. I kept getting check engine for oxygen sensor & it led me find out this problem on mine. Honda Accord 2000
I am going to be doing my plugs on my first Gen Mazda 3. I’ve done oil changes tire changes but never spark plugs. I’ve been told it’s just as easy as a oil change. Take my time and learn. I’m excited about it. From this video I know that there is more that I need to look for which is good. Thanks for the video.

Be sure to let the car cool all the way down or you risk breaking a spark plug. Put a little anti seize on the new plug threads so they are easy to get out next time. Definitely easier than an oil change....have fun.

This video helped me a lot. I really appreciate it.
Thanks for saying it is the tube seal. I am on my way to dealer right now to get valve cover gasket and tube seals for my 09 tC.
That was actually pretty entertaining 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Lubricate the top of the spark tubes and nurse the seals over them before snugging down the cover or you risk pinching the seals. That will require a redo with new seals. Ask me how I know.
Thanks for the video. I have a Range Rover 2003 HSE and got a Engine light telling me that Bank 2 was misfiring. I changed all the spark plugs on bank 2 , still was getting a rough idle and a throttle Position Sensor code P0221 & P0120. towed it to my mechanic with diagnosis was as you mentioned in this video. Valve Gaskets and Tube seals. So I' going to have them replaced. Thanks.
wow...i will check my cars value cover etc tomorrow for leaks... great video...
Man that’s exactly what is wrong with my car thanks for the easy explanation on why my oil is getting in the spark plug thank you !!!!
Thanks bro. Videos like this give people the confidence they didn't know they had to begin making repairs on their own vehicles and save themselves thousands of dollars in the process. I do have a question though: When you removed the intake and valve cover, why did you end up having to use an air gun and a rag to clean the oil out of the wells? Couldn't you have just simply wiped them out while they were off of the block?
Thanks, I definitely learnt something of your vid... Just need to buy or order a new rocket cover gasket for my car, Nd some of those seals, like you shown on that rocket cover on that V6 Honda Accord... Looks like a quick fix...

As always good stuff 👍🏽
Do you have any videos on how to replace/remove the spark plug tubes themselves? I think this is where my problem lies, beneath or under the tube. They need to be _resealed_ at the bottom or just replaced.
Great video learned so I can do it on my 2004 Element
This is the third or fourth time I've watched one of your videos. All of them were informative And easy to follow. I don't know if I ever followed Any for a repair, but I don't retain a great deal these days, so I may have. Today I got around to subscribing and liking your channel as a token of my appreciation. I have a little four-cylinder 1.8 DOH With oil in ONE spark plug well. Of course since it is dung i'd rather not deal with it is the number two plug. I think the universe for its sense of humor. Reckon I need to take the valve cover gasket off to access the overhangs at the bottom of the spark plug and replace the valve cover gasket as well. Any thoughts by anyone?
Do i have to change the ignition coil if it get oil on the coil?
@andrewkontoh6060

I am not a pro. It is most likely you do not have to change the ignition coil. If the engine is misfiring change the spark plugs along with what was shown in the video.
Len gets amped up before coming on camera.. Let's go! Hoo Ha!
You are very profesional thanks I love the way you work
My son's 2005 Mazda 3 has a misfire on 4, and 2 codes for lean conditions. Figured I'd change the plug. I changed the plug and coil pack yr but the code never really went off. Starting to drive more rough. Considering trying to change those seals. Thanks for the video
Bad valve seals can cause oil on sparkplug too. Even blown piston rings and valve cover gasket.
Thank u! good to see the honda v6 represented here. Think Ive got some heads to do.
Every time I looked this up, I always saw it was the piston rings. So I am glad I found an alternative cause for the problem. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing! Good video!
Just changed my spark plugs on my chrysler 300 and one of em had oil , I started tripping glad to come across this video in the same day
You made it look easy i have an 07 saturn vue with 3.5 motor
A lot of my parts come from you guys for my Acura in my Prelude this particular job right here I have done but you should do it on the other side as well you didn't mention that in your video but I hope us DYI guys will take the initiative and do the other side as well
Very useful, thanks!
How about cleaning the oil out of the tube before removing the plug so your cylinder isn't filled with oil and you end up with a hydro-locked cylinder? Also, I recommend using a plastic tool to remove the spark plug gaskets, or as a last resort, a flat-blade screwdriver with its blade covered in duct tape to prevent scratching your valve cover and returning to square one with oil in the tubes.
You make it look so easy 😔 I have to try to do it myself tomorrow 🙁
Would have been better if he used an oil seal puller than a screwdriver.

Or at least have been a bit more caring with it. That was a serious bonk on there. I'd be afraid of ruining anywhere around the gasket. I get they're trying to show what an at home mechanic might be able to do with some common tools, but that scared me when I saw it.

Wow this is great video thanks so much
Thanks bro really appreciate this info & this might be happening to my 2020 Honda Civic Sport. Either the gasket(s) might need replacement or I might had overflow it with engine oil. Think even if I went just a lil above the max meter of the engine oil this can overflow into the park plugs?
Been trying to troubleshoot and narrow down some bad idling and loss of power. Changed my spark plugs and noticed the plug from 3rd cylinder had a little bit of oil on it... I'm gonna redo the cover gaskets soon when I redo the value lash adjustment.
Does anyone have a idea how much this will cost? I'm clueless but learning fast so far I have fixed everything right. Thanks for this video and all the help. God Speed
Got the same issue with my 2006 Acura 3.2 TL. The front valve cover will be easy to access. The rear valve cover...... That's gonna be a bit more challenging.
Thanks for the excellent video as usual. I have a similar issue but it appears only my spark plug threads are soaked in oil. Everything else up top seems oil free. I did rub my hand across the gasket material above the spark plug and one of the holes left a very trace amount of shiny stuff on my hand (i hope is oil) also the gaskets did have a shiny appearance at certain angles. Is it possible that it could leak very slow down the sparkplug without leaving a trace up top and gather at the threads? I really want this to just be a valve cover gasket issue as opposed to something huge. Also the car has a very slight misfire at prolonged idle... it doesn't even throw a code but I can feel them.
PLEASE HELP! i really need this video for a 4.2l 2003 isuzu ascender/ chevy trailblazer engine! Yalls videos are so useful and i havent been able to find a video for it!
