    Scotty Kilmer I have a 2000 Ford F-150 XLT. I checked the spark plugs on the passenger side but I noticed that the plugs are not in the valve cover, they are beside the valve cover. So my question is what’s causing oil to go into the spark plugs? The valve cover looks nice and clean! Could it be the intake manifold gasket that’s going bad?

    different cars actually have different designs, some have the tube seal built into the valve cover gaskets, some can be changed from the top, some from the inside, and some actually require removal of the tube assembly itself.

    depends what's left to grab. Ford plugs break all the time like that, and they make a special kit for removing them that has all kinds of neat tools for grabbing what's left and getting it out. It works great, and all auto parts stores either sell em or can order em. I got mine at an Oreilly's auto store in texas.

    Yeah guys, me too!, I had a 1994 - CAMRY, for the Wifey, & 2000 - CAMRY, for the in-law, but he forgot the most important part, Noticed he mentioned the VALVE - COVER- & Valve Cover - TUBES. WELL I did this same exact job, One month later, I find out that I'm still having LEAKS on top of my spark plugs!!, So, I start asking around, other MECH. W/ much experi than me of coarse, & he told me that the spark plug tubes, are CUT in half in 2 - pieces, & are threaded together, & maybe some factory some manufacturers did not put any silicone on the threads and that's where the oil is leaking from.... Cuz it was driving me nuts and crazy like where is the oil coming from??? 🤔 Anywho, just thought I would share this with you guys or someone who needs some help....

    Appreciate your videos Scotty. My 2016 Optima was guzzling oil. My mechanic stated that oil was getting through the O ring and wetting the spark plugs causing me to sputter and misfire. He recommended a complete engine rebuild. When I took it to the dealership, they replaced the spark plugs, PCV valve, rocker gasket cover, fuel pump gasket and fuel pipe, and completed an oil change and 2 part throttle body service. I'm back and running again this week but I fear all this work still isn't going to fix the excessive oil consumption issue. There also seems to be a lot of back and forth online about whether a bad gasket would allow the spark plugs to get soaked. Keep up the good work, pal. I'm here every time something up with my car.

    @jstory25 depends where the oil is, if the whole plugs are wet, the spark plug tube gaskets just need changing as in this video. If only the firing ends are worn, yes, the engine has internal wear like valve seals being bad or worn piston rings. BIG money there. Scotty

  • @blown8950
    @blown89506 жыл бұрын

    Great video, but it only covers one potential cause of spark plug tube leakage. The absolute best way to remedy oil in the tubes is while you have your valve cover off to change the gasket and upper spark plug tube seals is to remove the spark plug tubes themselves. They just screw into the cylinder head. Clean off both the lower and upper threads with a wire brush, apply your favorite sealant to the lower threads (I like Toyota FIPG--get it at Amazon), then screw each tube securely back into the cylinder heads. I use a small pipe wrench with the teeth ground down a bit to remove the tubes and avoid marring. I've repaired many this way, it works very well. The potential for oil to seep past the threads in the head that is constantly bathed in oil is much greater than the splash getting past the seals at the top of the tubes. So, if you're experiencing oil leakage in the spark plug tubes and you ONLY replace the upper tube seals, don't be surprised if your problem persists. Thanks.

    hahahahahahah.. OK, let's see the five minute removal of these tubes in a Nissan 350Z! With that car, you remove the whole induction system.. (Intake, throttle body, intake plumbing and all associated wiring) then you can remove the coil pack from each cylinder, then remove the plugs and finally the valve covers. Several hours later, you may have it all back together and hopefully, if you did it all right, the engine will start and actually idle. Loads of fun. Now, with my 4 cyl Civic, it took all of an hour to do and I was taking my time with it all.

    Oreillys sells the spark plug tubes. MSPT5 is the melling part number. I bought a set just in case I goober up the old ones since they have like 200k miles on them they are pretty tight in there. the threads go into the cylinder head thus oil on plug end. they misfire action

  • @Philly1224

    @Philly1224

    If oil is on the inside covering the threads with the spark, you have a bad problem. Your car will most likely have blue smoke at startup or acceleration. This indicates bad head gasket or a bad piston ring seal. Both cost thousands to repair :( . Scotty has another video describing this and he uses ATP reseal in the video, but that is basically a band-aid on a gunshot wound (it helps, but it isn't permanent). This wouldn't cause a smell of gas though, so you may have a separate issue as well. It's been around a year since you posted this, so it would be interesting to see what happened.

    Super helpful video! Went to change my sparks. 2 sparks had bad oil. Unfortunately my engine is below my air system. I have to move it/take off to access my engine. Tomorrows gonna be fun. Lots of truck work to do. Getting to the engine and breaking loose years worth of grime to loosen fasteners to get access to my cylinder seals.

    Fucking Nissan makes you change the whole valve cover to fix this damn issue lol. The spark plug tubes don't have seals themselves, it's all a part of the valve cover. This is why I like working on my e39 way more.

    Integrafreak1 The VQ engine is a bit of a pain because of how it's transversely mounted. It's about a six-hour job, most of which is spent removing parts, including the intake manifold and window cowl, to get to the rear cylinder bank - smh. My Acura V6s are a bit easier, but there are a bunch of brackets to remove to get to the driver's side seals. Also, Honda added a second set of lower seals in many of their cars that require the valve train to be removed to replace them. I'm replacing those now in my Acura Legend because of a misfire issue that appears to be related to oil in the spark plug wells; the once-rubber lower seals were brittle and hard like plastic.

    hoopfan71 I own a 1996 Nissan Maxima, with the VQ30DE engine and I recently replaced the front valve cover gasket was a breeze, but the rear, however, will be a pain to get off. because of the intake manifold.
