Destination Earth is a 1956 propaganda Sci-Fi cartoon created by John Sutherland and sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute, still the biggest lobby for the U.S. oil and gas industry. It explains the fundamentals of the petroleum industry and how petroleum products enrich everyday life in the United States of America, as well as the benefits of a free market economy.
The cartoon was produced in the middle of the Cold War. Not surprisingly, it features a fine blend of anti-communist and pro-capitalist sentiment. The cartoon follows the adventures of "Colonel Cosmic," a Martian space traveler, as he learns that oil and competition are the two things that make America great.
The cartoon compares the Earth-style free enterprise economics to a stagnating Mars under the fist of a certain “Mr. Ogg,” a dictator who centrally controls the Martian economy. Mars, the "red" planet, looks a lot like the Soviet Union and Ogg, the totalitarian leader who puts his name on everything and forces the Martians to applaud for him, looks like Stalin with large moustache. Colonel Cosmic, who flies from Mars to Earth, is actually on an intelligence mission. He finds that the lack of government regimentation and control is what makes the American system flourish. Colonel Cosmic goes back to Mars and initiates a revolution, overthrowing the Ogg government. Soon, lots of small businesses and wildcat oil drillers are in business and Mars is starting to look like Earth.
Destination Earth avoids coming off as too doctrinaire or propagandistic through its self-deprecating humor (a trademark of John Sutherland films), but it's still an insidious, self-serving piece of corporate propaganda. It takes the ideas expressed in films like Make Mine Freedom and takes them one step further, showing free-enterprise ideology not simply as a defense against socialism but as a means of subverting other societies.
Storyline:
Ogg, the supreme dictatorial leader of Mars, holds a special rally to celebrate the exploits of Mars' first space explorer Colonel Cosmic, who has just returned from a trip to Earth. That trip was initiated by Ogg to overcome the problems of Ogg's own explosive-powered state limousine, by finding out how state limousines on other plants operated. By chance, Cosmic landed in the United States. He ventured into a nearby big city where he found that all Americans could move quickly and efficiently by gasoline powered automobiles. Despite the difficulty of finding and getting the raw resource of petroleum out of the ground, petroleum and distributing it to the masses is the panacea for many of the problems that Americans may have faced otherwise, not only as that efficient fuel source, but also for the manufacture of many other transportation and non-transportation related products. Cosmic also found another important component - capitalist spirit of competition - in making America the most prosperous nation on Earth, which, if adopted on Mars, could overthrow Ogg's dictatorship. The Martian triumphantly returned to Mars with stolen library books on the oil industry. After reading from them the population of Mars deserts Ogg and sets up their own oil companies. The short ends with the slogan "destination unlimited" written across the screen.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
The Cold War (1947-1991) was in many respects a struggle for the hearts and minds of people everywhere. That competition was carried out through massive American and Soviet propaganda campaigns to isolate the respective opponent internationally, win the approval of world opinion, and consolidate the own sphere of influence. Every opportunity from art exhibits to international sports events, and every medium from radio to television, was used to fight the propaganda war.
Television and advertising played key roles in constructing the image of an ideal American way of life. American propaganda functioned to shore up support and national pride by projecting an image of prosperity, freedom and strength. In many ways, however, these images were fantasy. They contrasted and conflicted with many American's real life.

This film really tells us the great achievements we make with oil and how important it is with sprinkles of Capitalism. But now we have a Climate Crisis and depletion of the world's resources. So from the eyes of someone 70 years later, it instead gives a different message. Saying that we depend way too much on oil and that we need to find alternatives.

Yes, but back then oil was relatively plentiful and cheap. It was assumed it would take centuries to run out, especially with new exploration technologies finding new reserves off the coasts & under the deserts. We pretty much have the same mindset with renewables. Yes, the wind & sun are perpetual, but the minerals & metals we need to produce the photovoltaics, wind turbines, and batteries are not.

Currently we have no way to know how rare the emergence of life is, as we only have a sample size of one and no way to truly verify if life does exist or once did exist on other planets. Britain too had a very incompetent and despotic army under the commission system when they paid people to create their own regiments but the army improved greatly when the authority to create regiments was centralized. The USA is probably the best example of the effectiveness of central professional armies over militia. Prior to the mobilization of the US army and creation of the legion of the US, the US militia performed poorly against the natives which led to St. Clair's defeat in the battle of Wabash. • @kauske

You also get less diesel per volume of crude, diesel engines have to be a lot more complicated to be very efficient and they are tougher on oil and themselves in the long run due to the way diesel combusts unevenly and generates lots of suit to pollute the oil. Diesel also needs lots of extra cooling, which puts a similar, if not greater parasitic load on the engine than spark plugs. You also have to contend with idling a diesel destroys the engine over time, and that they are not great at higher RPM and have more sluggish acceleration. Both gasoline and diesel have downsides to consider, doubly so if you want a clean diesel, which destroys all economy.

@@kauske To be completely honest, I have not seen a diesel engine need a repair in more than 20 years that my family had diesel cars. But gasoline engines break every 7 years on average from what i've experienced. I do not understand why lower RPM with higher mommentum would result in slower acceleration - it does not really make sense considering the speeds involved. The only real downside of Diesel I can think of is that it's louder.

  • @kauske

    @kauske

    Жыл бұрын

@@kompatybilijny9348 You haven't? You must not have seen many diesels, big trucks get absolutely ravage by how much they get idled, same with stationary diesel generators. No matter how good the engine, diesels suffer horrible blow-by at idle, which adds tons of soot to the oil, which acts as an abrasive. I've seen plenty of petrol engines last ages, the biggest issue is they took all the diesel high-compression tech and crammed it onto gas engines, making them operate at ludicrous compression while making them out of the least metal they possibly can. Before high efficiency, high compression gas engines, gasoline cas would last every bit as long, if not longer, they also had big cast iron block engines, just like diesel, but don't detonate fuel erratically like compression detonation does. If we built gasoline engines like diesels, they would last just as long. You also have the issue that diesels make problematic ozone and NOX pollution due to their huge compression, not to mention the soot. You either have to eat the pollution (which is bad for health and infrastructure), or fit them with filtration systems, which rob performance and add operating costs. Both engine types have their issues, just as electric has its issue with batteries that obliterates the fact that modern electric motors blow the lid off everything performance and efficiency wise. It's an all-around loose when you're talking about cars, no matter what you do, you have a downside, you just have to pick your poison.

I'm going to write what I think personally, I'm not uneducated, I'm not ignorant, and Calling me names will do nothing but prove you're immaturity and inability to argue in a logical fashion. Reading this whole thing would be far beneficial to you, and I would recommend it before you attempt to dissect anything I've stated. Ok your grammar could use some work, and your spelling as well. I don't know what you're talking about, but I'd assume you're talking about emissions from cars and people today. And yes Volcanos are BIG they have the ability to change the area around them in the time span of a few minutes to a few years. While people like Al Gore said that by 2016 all the ice caps would have melted or mostly melted in his movie "An Inconvenient Truth". That tells me he didn't assess his data very well, and I have found that the only accurate factual information we have to rely regarding climate change (funny how it was "Global Warming" now the term is "Climate Change") on is what levels CO2 and the possible temperature of the earth was in the past, via ice samples. Volcanoes have the ability to end life on earth, the possible Super Volcano under Yellowstone could end all life in the Americas possibly. Then alter the globe thus killing all life. That's a super volcano mind you, but Volcanoes release millions of tonnes of CO2 when they erupt at times. One geologist came to the conclusion through measurements of the size of the volcano, and the calculated size of the plum of ash from the eruption that he observed had released more CO2 into the atmosphere than mankind has ever in it's ENTIRE existence on Earth. Global Warming could very well be occurring...but I still do not have sufficient hard evidence to prove that Humans are causing it. Unless someone can assemble hard recorded evidence, with observable results to come to a conclusion that we are causing it then I will stay unpersuaded. Simply saying "The earth is warming! Your an idiot! Can't you see the arctic is melting! Isn't that proof?" doesn't prove anything. The Earth is warming, but scientists all over the globe have theories as to why. Some say Earth has been doing it sense the stabilization of the surface, some say solar flares can affect the atmosphere and it's ability to reflect light and UV rays, some say it's due to a change we have not yet discovered. Simply saying "There's a bunch of people on earth then it must be true." isn't accurate. It's like stating... All those birds go to that tree because it's their favorite, why else would only those birds nest there. When in reality the tree has small thorns to fend off predators on the ground. The scary emotional notion of the Earth ending shouldn't force everyone into this one singular explanation. Especially if it's only CO2 levels are increasing, green house gases, and etc... When we can't record, observe, or factually come to the conclusion that CO2 is in fact the cause. And we can't reach that conclusion because the Earth is just so massive, it's extremely difficult to prove! I'm all for reducing emissions, smog sucks, its harms people with breathing problems, we pollute the beautiful Earth. But I'm not entirely sold on Al Gore's so far inaccurate claims of when things would occur.

Guess you have never worked in a business were you had to work to keep your costumers happy then. Trust me. Competition is real. That is why when I worked with a small corporation we managed to out compete several corporations that was way larger than us.

@@jeanmarc6517 The problem is that I am not wrong. You are making a false dichotomy where everyone must be able to be a competitor with everyone in literally everything if you are going to accept that competition exist. I am not a pro-athlete that can get anywhere close to a Olympic medal. I most likely never had that ability. By your logic. Sports can not have competition as not everyone can compete for the absolute top spot.

I saw this on the X Files: US SPACE SURVEILLANCE CENTER CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN, CO MALE OFFICER #1: Sir? Sorry to disturb you sir. But we just picked up an unidentified bogey. I think you should see the replay for yourself. (both officer and chief walk toward info area) MALE OFFICER #1: It tripped the fence at 23-17 off the coast of Connecticut, sir. CAPTAIN KORETZ: Initial trajectory was north by northwest. Then it started going crazy. COLONEL CALVIN HENDERSON: What about other craft in the area...missile testing? CAPTAIN KORETZ: Sir. No known aircraft can maneuver like this. MALE OFFICER #1: Well, whatever it was dropped of the screen at 24-18 sir. Hit ground just west of Lake Michigan outside Townsend Wisconsin. CAPTAIN KORETZ: The tracking and impact team predicted impact calculated at over 800 miles an hour. MALE OFFICER #1: I've instructed Chief Koretz to start her report right away... COLONEL CALVIN HENDERSON: Negative. What she tracked was a meteor. Its aberrant movement was obviously due to instrument malfunction. CAPTAIN KORETZ: But sir... COLONEL CALVIN HENDERSON: Your report will reflect these facts. Is that clear? MALE OFFICER #1: Yes sir. COLONEL CALVIN HENDERSON: Good. (Colonel exits, walks to deserted corner. Dials cell phone) COLONEL CALVIN HENDERSON: Code indigo delta echo niner. I have a confirmed fallen angel in sector 87. Mobilize Operation Falcon Immediately.

Oh did i forgot the CO2, but that just myth. Cows and other livestock are the real perpetrators to point finger at. World leaders came to an agreement.😅 That's how dumb we are, we have a means to solve all world problems 3 times over, but instead we decide to make means to make it 300 time more worse.
