This film really tells us the great achievements we make with oil and how important it is with sprinkles of Capitalism. But now we have a Climate Crisis and depletion of the world's resources. So from the eyes of someone 70 years later, it instead gives a different message. Saying that we depend way too much on oil and that we need to find alternatives.

Putting the invisibility button right next to the suicide button was a risky decision.

@@ducky7724 There's a good argument for how American energy independence will not affect the average consumer in prices as no matter what, the price of fuel will go up and down with global prices, but just at a lower cost due to it being subsidized.

genuinely made me shiver when he said "limitless". The attitude in the 50s, that there would always be more oil is genuinely so crazy. Yes, but back then oil was relatively plentiful and cheap. It was assumed it would take centuries to run out, especially with new exploration technologies finding new reserves off the coasts & under the deserts. We pretty much have the same mindset with renewables. Yes, the wind & sun are perpetual, but the minerals & metals we need to produce the photovoltaics, wind turbines, and batteries are not.

@@FurryEskimo We have no way to be certain that oil never formed on mars. It's widely accepted that mars once had oceans of liquid water and geological activity similar to earth, which may have allowed for life to emerge. Because of this mars may have had ecosystems and biomes just as vast and diverse as earth's, which would mean the conditions for oil to form would likely occur somewhere on mars, even if the probability of it happening in any specific place is low. Currently we have no way to know how rare the emergence of life is, as we only have a sample size of one and no way to truly verify if life does exist or once did exist on other planets. Therefore we have no way to know the likelihood of there being oil on mars, we just know that it is possible.

Are you referring to the fossil fuel caused environmental crisis, the Martians being a stand in for the Soviet Union, or a combination of both?

You'd think with advanced technology like massive telescreens (the biggest Earthling TVs in the 1950s would just be several feet wide), invisibility, rayguns, near-indestructable flying saucers, and interplanetary propulsion the size of a stick of dynamite, the Martians would have no interest adapting the Earthlings relatively primitive fossil-fuel technology.

@@astk5214 Tbf, decentralized armies tend to have a bad record when it comes to success against centralized armies. Napoleon wiped the divided HRE, The Mongol empire declined after it decentralized and France was weaker under the baron-state friendly Capet kings than they were under the more unitary and authoritarian Bourbon kings. Britain too had a very incompetent and despotic army under the commission system when they paid people to create their own regiments but the army improved greatly when the authority to create regiments was centralized. The USA is probably the best example of the effectiveness of central professional armies over militia. Prior to the mobilization of the US army and creation of the legion of the US, the US militia performed poorly against the natives which led to St. Clair's defeat in the battle of Wabash. Centralized markets have a lot of major cons that make adopting monopolies a very debatably bad idea. Centralized armies on the other hand are just plain better than non centralized armies historically.

that's one way to look at it. another is he's THAT egotistical. it's not entirely unheard of for people, usually those not popular in public eyes [yet rich and high in social status] to build/dedicate their memorials BEFORE their death.

Note that they didn't picture the martians actually finding any oil. That's because there is none on Mars. Their planet will devolve into anarchy and starvation, and they will welcome back the rule of Ogg, having to endure a future of hundreds of years of hardship and gulags. Such is life in Mars.

Not to mention courage and self assurance are such common traits that pretty much anyone can have/claim to them hence why some people believe in this bullshit because the traits are so common (and usually positive) that people will think “oh yeah that’s totally me” even if the traits don’t actually match them. People will believe any lie as long as it’s a complement.

Something like the "Laser" gun can be excused as a one and done weapon that warps quickly from overheating as it's used, utilizing a normally overwhelming source that's just good for a quick burst of destructive energy, but inefficient in anything reliable or useful. They're basically running on rapidly burning kegs of gunpowder that can only go as long as the short lived battery lasts. @@MegaMementoMori Well, you literally ignored what I said in favor of defending something that wasn't at issue. It actually didn't "work" that there was a limitless supply of oil. There is the oil that has been discovered since and has yet to be used, and probably still left to be discovered. That isn't the same, it isn't limitless. We're using it far faster and in much larger quantities than can be replaced.

@@he-mememan359 I think a lot of oil use will be replaced in the near future by hydrogen and alcohol (alcohol in chemical terms covers a lot more than just the type of alcohol people get drunk on). Existing engines can be converted in a lot of cases so a plus there.

Actually anyone already super rich and already in the industry and willing to risk it can drill for oil. Also I love how gasoline specifically is mentioned as the most efficient power source for automobiles on earth when diesel already existed, was largely used (mainly with trucks and semis but diesel cars were not that rare even in 1950s - Mercedes, Fiat, Peugeot and Austin were all heavily invested in diesel as a fuel and are pretty much responsible with VW who jumped on that bandwagon in 80s for the fact that majority of Europe is now driving diesel cars) and is by nature just more efficient (not less harmful, it is more harmful since it releases higher amounts of CO2, PM and NOx but you get more energy out of it by conventional means). Like... there were literally 2 widespread fuels at the time for cars and they pick the less efficient one. LOL.

It's because the generations born just before or after leaded gas was phased out and banned have been coming of age and instantly realized how sucks everything is. There is a drop of like 20 iq points in the populations and times affected by the lead poisoning, and there is not in more recent generations. As wack as iq is, it is a reasonable estimate for generalization purposes. I won't dispute that there's a lot of shit in the environment that is suboptimal for humans to consume, but lead dosed gasoline is very much a superheavyweight to microplastics or what lead is in our water now's mediumweight.

Russia and Saudi Arabia are neither particularly democratic or particularly free? And they both run their oil companies as state-owned businesses, like the vast majority of oil companies to some extent (even if say, the Iraqi oil companies state-owner used to be Britain). I was just laughing at the idea of oil companies selling themselves as anti-tyranny freedom dispensers, when oil companies are _famous_ for helping prop-up regimes. It's not all like that - the nordic countries use their oil money to create their liberal utopias or w/e. But when I think oil, I think Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Diesel actually has a higher energy density than gasoline so gas isn't the most efficient. Furthermore diesel engines don't require spark plugs which put a parasitic load on the engine.

You also get less diesel per volume of crude, diesel engines have to be a lot more complicated to be very efficient and they are tougher on oil and themselves in the long run due to the way diesel combusts unevenly and generates lots of suit to pollute the oil. Diesel also needs lots of extra cooling, which puts a similar, if not greater parasitic load on the engine than spark plugs. You also have to contend with idling a diesel destroys the engine over time, and that they are not great at higher RPM and have more sluggish acceleration. Both gasoline and diesel have downsides to consider, doubly so if you want a clean diesel, which destroys all economy.

@@kauske To be completely honest, I have not seen a diesel engine need a repair in more than 20 years that my family had diesel cars. But gasoline engines break every 7 years on average from what i've experienced. I do not understand why lower RPM with higher mommentum would result in slower acceleration - it does not really make sense considering the speeds involved. The only real downside of Diesel I can think of is that it's louder.

@@kompatybilijny9348 You haven't? You must not have seen many diesels, big trucks get absolutely ravage by how much they get idled, same with stationary diesel generators. No matter how good the engine, diesels suffer horrible blow-by at idle, which adds tons of soot to the oil, which acts as an abrasive. I've seen plenty of petrol engines last ages, the biggest issue is they took all the diesel high-compression tech and crammed it onto gas engines, making them operate at ludicrous compression while making them out of the least metal they possibly can. Before high efficiency, high compression gas engines, gasoline cas would last every bit as long, if not longer, they also had big cast iron block engines, just like diesel, but don't detonate fuel erratically like compression detonation does. If we built gasoline engines like diesels, they would last just as long. You also have the issue that diesels make problematic ozone and NOX pollution due to their huge compression, not to mention the soot. You either have to eat the pollution (which is bad for health and infrastructure), or fit them with filtration systems, which rob performance and add operating costs. Both engine types have their issues, just as electric has its issue with batteries that obliterates the fact that modern electric motors blow the lid off everything performance and efficiency wise. It's an all-around loose when you're talking about cars, no matter what you do, you have a downside, you just have to pick your poison.

I'm going to write what I think personally, I'm not uneducated, I'm not ignorant, and Calling me names will do nothing but prove you're immaturity and inability to argue in a logical fashion. Reading this whole thing would be far beneficial to you, and I would recommend it before you attempt to dissect anything I've stated. Ok your grammar could use some work, and your spelling as well. I don't know what you're talking about, but I'd assume you're talking about emissions from cars and people today. And yes Volcanos are BIG they have the ability to change the area around them in the time span of a few minutes to a few years. While people like Al Gore said that by 2016 all the ice caps would have melted or mostly melted in his movie "An Inconvenient Truth". That tells me he didn't assess his data very well, and I have found that the only accurate factual information we have to rely regarding climate change (funny how it was "Global Warming" now the term is "Climate Change") on is what levels CO2 and the possible temperature of the earth was in the past, via ice samples. Volcanoes have the ability to end life on earth, the possible Super Volcano under Yellowstone could end all life in the Americas possibly. Then alter the globe thus killing all life. That's a super volcano mind you, but Volcanoes release millions of tonnes of CO2 when they erupt at times. One geologist came to the conclusion through measurements of the size of the volcano, and the calculated size of the plum of ash from the eruption that he observed had released more CO2 into the atmosphere than mankind has ever in it's ENTIRE existence on Earth. Global Warming could very well be occurring...but I still do not have sufficient hard evidence to prove that Humans are causing it. Unless someone can assemble hard recorded evidence, with observable results to come to a conclusion that we are causing it then I will stay unpersuaded. Simply saying "The earth is warming! Your an idiot! Can't you see the arctic is melting! Isn't that proof?" doesn't prove anything. The Earth is warming, but scientists all over the globe have theories as to why. Some say Earth has been doing it sense the stabilization of the surface, some say solar flares can affect the atmosphere and it's ability to reflect light and UV rays, some say it's due to a change we have not yet discovered. Simply saying "There's a bunch of people on earth then it must be true." isn't accurate. It's like stating... All those birds go to that tree because it's their favorite, why else would only those birds nest there. When in reality the tree has small thorns to fend off predators on the ground. The scary emotional notion of the Earth ending shouldn't force everyone into this one singular explanation. Especially if it's only CO2 levels are increasing, green house gases, and etc... When we can't record, observe, or factually come to the conclusion that CO2 is in fact the cause. And we can't reach that conclusion because the Earth is just so massive, it's extremely difficult to prove! I'm all for reducing emissions, smog sucks, its harms people with breathing problems, we pollute the beautiful Earth. But I'm not entirely sold on Al Gore's so far inaccurate claims of when things would occur.

Based on all the alien-UFO disclosure books and other materials I'm reading, this is literally, exactly, how they really behave on Mars. - Ha, at the end, he merely turns the dictator invisible! That's pretty accurate, too.

Stirling engines are actually very inefficient, but their size used to be convenient.

So Ogg came to the USA and ran for US Senator in the State of Delaware.

They left out the part in which oil companies pumped the atmosphere full of lead from the gasoline.

Thing is, unleaded gasoline has always existed, but not cheap unleaded octane boosters. As such, unleaded gas was often 80 octane, and it's car manufacturers' fault for making engines that demanded 87 octane back in the '50s, when engines like the Model A's needed no such additive.

it is baffling to me how they can defend competition as if it's 1700s. No industry has had considerable competition since the first world war, industry giants have always tried to and somewhat achieved monopolization or oligopolization.

Guess you have never worked in a business were you had to work to keep your costumers happy then. Trust me. Competition is real. That is why when I worked with a small corporation we managed to out compete several corporations that was way larger than us.

I-N-D-U-S-T-R-Y. Now tell me, what kind of small industry compete with any big industries to the point were they are considered competition? Do you think theres like, people building their own car factories and suddenly they sell as much than Volkswagen?

You are making a false dichotomy where everyone must be able to be a competitor with everyone in literally everything if you are going to accept that competition exist. I am not a pro-athlete that can get anywhere close to a Olympic medal. I most likely never had that ability. By your logic. Yes, it's totally 1950s-style. A studio named UPA pioneered this abstracted look which quickly caught on throughout the animation industry. (Compare a 1940s Bugs Bunny cartoon to one made in the '50s.)

Imagine if they did find oil on Mars. I mean, not only would that prove life existed at some point, but we'd probably land a person there, like, by 2018.

"The whole galaxy of things to make a better life on earth" Yeah nothing on earth makes a life better like microplastics, additives acting as endocrine disruptors in food chain and plastic junk size of freaking texas floating in oceans. Oh did i forgot the CO2, but that just myth. Cows and other livestock are the real perpetrators to point finger at. World leaders came to an agreement.😅 That's how dumb we are, we have a means to solve all world problems 3 times over, but instead we decide to make means to make it 300 time more worse.
