Oil catch Can Explained - ( Do They Really Work )

The oil catch can explained on how it works on my ZD30.
The benefits of an oil catch can are explained in this video.
My GU Nissan Patrol has an oil catch can fitted, and it works very well on my ZD30 motor.
As you can see with my oil catch can in this video, it works well and the benefits are shown with the amount of oil that the catch can has caught from my diesel Nissan Patrol ZD30 motor.
An oil catch can is well worth having to help keep the inside of your motor nice and clean.
Matt from Diesel Tune Australia has explained how an oil catch can works, and the benefits of having a catch can installed on your motor.

I was all ways told, you only need oil catch can if you live in the city and do short trips. I live north-west NSW and the 4x4 dose 1000 km a week. Next time I buy a new 4x4 I will put an oil catch can on it.

I own a diesel! Not a 4wd but a tdi Vw polo. After 113,000 kilometres the egr went and needed replacement and a while after this it developed a boost leak also which was found to be the bottom intercooler hose had a split in it but once removed we saw just how much disgusting oil was in it! Which I believe lead to its demise?! I researched catch cans as by now I was most interested. I was only going to use a Mann and Hummel provent though but after measuring I discovered that the provent 200 was simply to large to fit under my bonnet so I chose the provent 100 and it fits up front perfectly. From Bunnings I found oil and petrol proof clear 19mm hose which was a perfect fit. The hose going into the catch can is black and gross now after approximately 70,000 kilometres but the hose going back into the inlet by the turbo is still relatively clear so they do work in catching the muck this is why I chose clear hose to monitor it. Each time I drain it I get around 150mls out of it. I’ve never pulled off the intake or intercooler pipes since but I’m betting that they’ll be pretty dry by now and I’m assured that the black, oily mess is not going back in to the system. I’ve got 240,000 kilometres on my engine now and it’s still running great. The genuine catch cans DO work.

Great video gain as usual Tim. 🤗 When our company was purchasing its XLT Rangers Ford told is that if we fitted a catch can that we would immediately breach our warranty. 😢 We follow the Ford Ranger Group on Facebook & catch cans are a very regular topic of discussion that pops up & its always 50/50 in favor of V's against.🤔 We don't have any in our XLT Rangers, they are serviced both on the dot +/- a couple of hundred K's & a full oil change is done in between services @ every 7,500K's. @ Every service a full oil change & oil filter is done. Our vehicles do long K's on most of their trips 1,200K's @ between 100Km/Ph & 110Km/Ph in a day is not unusual with the avarage being around 400K's to 600K's in a day @ an avarage of between 80 & 100Km/Ph, our vehicles don't see much metro / city driving. All our XLT Rangers all run the diesel management secondary 2 micron fuel filter which is also changed at every service & inbetween service. All our vehicles also only run Bp Ultimate or Caltex Vortex So not sure if all that makes a difference or not. ?.🤔 Regards Wayne.

I had a no-named, undersized can on my Td42t for about 20k. Apart from it needing to be cleaned out every week, it'd build pressure in the rocker cover. I also noticed that the turbine fan blades were starting to get a burred edge (from what I can only imagine is oil drops). The turbo is only 25k old so, on went a provent 200 catch can and 3/4" lines. Maintenance is easier, pressures are better and the engine is going to last longer. Spend the money early in a build and do it right!

@David Bradford it was because it'd take bugger all to fill/ block the shitty tiny SS filter element (only assessable by removing 6x m4 bolts) and everything was just running straight to the catch tube.

Fitted a catch can to my Peugeot 308 1.6 turbo diesel. There was so much oil going down the intake, it ruined the hose to the turbo, which ruined the turbo vacuum advance, clogged up the intercooler, clogged up the MAP sensor , egr valve and the intake manifold. What a difference now. Part of the problem is the recommended oil is 5w30 which is very thin. Not sure if I can alter that. I also fitted a catch can to my 79 series Landcruiser Ute a couple of years ago after wondering were all the oil was coming from after looking down the intake to the turbo while changing the air filter. That started a lot of research into the cause of it. Directing the oil in combination with the carbon from the egr valve into the intake manifold resulting in sludge build up, seems to be a very poorly thought out solution to a pollution reduction requirement. Happy camper now.

Catch cans may have their place on older vehicles but on newer engines they are designed for a small amount of oil circulation. The problems arise when the egr gases mix with the oil vapour and causes build up. Far better to block the egr than to worry about installing a catch can. I know people are going to dissagree but thats my view.

I fitted a catch can since my rig has only around 8000km just nearly 2mos from the showroom. Now i have done 150k and have catch only around a litre of oil or maybe less. As I go on tru wealth of information in the internet I am now leaning towards removing it, since I haven’t found any source wherein a highly qualified engineer that has no vested interest recommended it. Im starting to think it useless and messy. I only fitted it due to some friend recommendation.

Modern Diesel engines will burn that oil. If you haven’t added an after market chip, you get your vehicle serviced on time (months or kms. Whichever comes first) and you’re doing some highway driving rather than just using your 4x4 to nick down to the shop, then you don’t need a catch can.

It was an evil plan trying to stuff that miserable stuff back into your engine,or worse, into your turbo.I realize when an engine is worn,it’s going to make a mess on your driveway if you don’t catch it though. When your engine is fresh,it goes to atmosphere successfully, but no one likes that idea. It goes anyway, after it’s been through your engine a second time🤣🤣
