Having worked on freighters and navigated around the globe I can tell you that during a passage through a canal or indeed a shipping lane like that one, no matter how many times you' ve done it, you need to be on top of your game and the captain must be present at all time, awake and sober, complacency leads to disaster, he's got zero excuses...

The worst part is the animals suffering

I remember this and lived up in Anchorage,Alaska when it happened when i was just a kid. I was born and rased in Anchorage,Alaska for 17 years. Anyway,The captain,Joseph Hazelwood of the Valdez was sentenced to work at Brother Francis/Bean's cafe,a homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Anchorage as punishment for this disaster and he was fined $50,000. They let him off super easy,IMO. This was one of the worst ecological disaster in history. Even 35 years later,they are cleaning it up. He died about 2 years ago on July,21st,2022 from both C's. Cancer and Covid-19.

I'm so glad this video is still available. This was such a devastating event for the marine ecosystem and for people. 35 years ago.

He got let off way too easy, his decision-making basically murdered all those poor animals an impacted countless people vary significantly. His fine was a joke along with the community service.

I remember when this happened well. Although the captain may have not been significantly impaired, alcohol does make you relaxed and tired. He might have stayed on the bridge had he not had those drinks. Realistically though, if he was still over the limit 10 hours after the incident and he hadn't had any more to drink, he must have been WAY over the limit during the crash.

That's not you who decides if he's an alcoholic, you can be an abuser without being an alcoholic. I don't drink but I have been a heavy drinker.

He was the captain it was his fault. The captain is in charge of his crew and ship. No one else he failed then exon failed then the state of Alaska failed in the cleanup. If you allow mining pumping or any risky ventures it is the state’s responsibility to address any problem caused by that venture not with tax dollars but with resources extracted from the venture in a bond to execute cleanup and economic damages.

It made me sick at the time, and still does. And Exxon are still making record profits. The world of big business today.

And yet we still haven't learnt a bloody thing from it🤔

Wrong, Tankers are now All Double Hulled, and many new regulations came into effect as a direct result of this disaster.

He was not the only guilty one, his crew and employers must have known he was a drunk.

Alcohol tests 10 hours after the accident!!!?? What would the level have been immediately after the accident?

Prior to the Exxon Valdez, I was employed with Exxon Marie Dept . I was on the Exxon Huston that came to relieve some of the oil that was still contained in the Valdez Valdez

I don’t believe the captain right from the get go, he’s talking about how he went to the bridge and immediately puked in the toilet because he felt like he was kicked in the stomach? I don’t believe that actually happened and he added that in to get sympathy and to try and make himself look better. Or it was from drinking. Either way I would want to hear about a captain who came up and immediately took control and was decisive and knew what to do, a competent captain. He just makes himself look like he didn’t know what he was doing and wasent trained well enough..

I remember after this happened, my parents switched to Dawn dish detergent. They were using it to clean all the wildlife. I grew up on Long Island along with Hazelwood. It was big news and gossip around that time.

Hazlewood's "emergency call" to the Coast Guard sounds like he is more than three sheets to the wind. If I were on his jury, this would be a factor tending to make me believe he was that much closer to criminal negligence (at best). Three drinks would be enough to put him over the limit for blood alcohol if he were driving a car; driving that ship under the influence of three vodkas on the rocks was much more dangerous.

I know in my state where any type of earthworm is an invasive species...they have found plastics in the worms in wilderness areas. I so not think we know how completely we have screwed the planet. I am fighting my second type cancer. My mom died of her third type. What we do to the web we do to ourselves.

They can’t ever really clean it up. It’s estimated that only 7% of the spill has been recovered. It dispersed over thousands of miles of coastline.

I don't know why he couldn't just see the ship through the crossing and then let the third mate take over. Maybe the alcohol contributed to this

You like to trust your crew people and he could’ve been exhausted. I commercial fish in Prince William Sound, right around Bligh Reef, and I am routinely left up to piloting the boat when my captain is tired. Granted it’s not a 900+ foot tanker, but still. Simple directions were given, you think the guy is fine and it turns out he wasn’t. Mistakes do happen. Think of many times a tanker has entered and left Valdez since this accident and how many issues there have been. The success rating is through the roof…the downside is just that when a mistake does happen, it’s huge.

Captains should be observing all course corrections. Alcohol rules should apply to pilots of ships like aircraft. Should have been SOP. Practice safety procedures or find out deficiencies the hard way. And never say never!

I want to sea in the merchant Marine . How many years. The first part of my career going to sea . We're on the older brake bulk ships. Toward the end of my career I went on the tankers 2 valdese where the money was. And I know that Prince William sound . Valdez narrows. The really nasty weather we had to deal with anyways. From what I understand and the shortest way I can explain in a nutshell. Talking to the people who are on the vessel. Right off the bat Hazelwood is lying. He was passed out. You left the bridge way too early you left the second mate . In charge of the bridge who was on March while they were and a ice field and Prince William sound. The people that told me what happened was the second mate was so involved watching the radar watching for icebergs. He was not watching. Closely enough course comands . The sailor that was on the wheel or that was driving the boat the ship was incompetent. He was a very bad quartermaster. He didn't know what he was doing. You say you have a compass. He was givencourse changes. Any went the wrong way to steer that course. Anyway of Hazelwood would not love the bridge. And would have been sober. Because this person that was their said Hazelwood had a bad problem of being drunk all the time. And turning the ship over early he drank heavy in port hell he was drunk all the time I heard.. he should have been made accountable he was drunk when his accident happened. I can't remember if they gave him a breathalyzer but I think by the time the Coast guard got there the alcohol wore off he's lying if he says he's sober he should have been held accountable and did at least 10 years in prison you're lucky we can't be accountable I make people accountable for the bad things they do they're going to keep doing them that goes with everything

The other day my kid was taking a bath and I pooped in his tub. His mom thought he did it and was screaming. Also it wasn't my kid, I don't know whose kid it was. It wasn't even my house. And the mom might have been screaming because I was in her house with my pants down. I don't know, I was really drunk. Just like the captain of this ship.
