Truly one of those head-scratching places. I do remember a couple dual-level areas in Indiana are the Erie Lackawanna Mainline. We have a small variation of this crossing in Milwaukee where there is a crossbuck in front of a concrete overpass to call attention to a grade crossing on the other side that is a street running spur into an asphalt distributorship. The overpass is CP the street trackage is UP. 200 block East Washington St pretty much in line with the huge Allen-Bradley four-faced clock. Thanks for sharing this Oddity

Weird! I thought that the bridged track was the 'up' line, and the crossing was the 'down' line, but those trains were travelling in opposite directions, and yet using the same track. What traffic, if any, uses the bridge?

Judging by the bridge, looks like one vehicle can get by at a time and in case of a backlog of traffic, having the gate there to stop oncoming traffic before reaching the bridge would allow cars that are stopped on or near the tracks on the other side to clear.

I've known about this crossing a while, live in Indiana... but have never gone and seen it for myself. But it's always been extremely fascinating to me. How could it not be?? The grade separation is seriously cool. The Erie Lackawanna through IN had a few areas of grade separation like this, but when it came to crossings, it was either a level crossing with both tracks, a road overpass over the tracks, or two rail overpasses at different heights above the road. But never a level crossing/overpass deal like this. This is a rarity for sure. And this line is an active Class 1 line... the EL has been removed for decades now.

But I can totally understand the idea of this, driving through the tunnel and coming out right meeting at the crossing Is a accident waiting to happen. So the extra added crossing arm is perfect for getting your attention that something is ahead.... but All you see is a tunnel. Can totally understand how many accidents would happen if that crossing arm wasn't in that odd spot...... but things are there for a reason...... this is a great example

The lights use LEDs that flicker at a frequency that you normally don't see (probably 30 Hz, half the mains frequency), but is very close to the shutter speed of the camera. In reality, you don't see the lights dim. It's just that sometimes the camera takes a picture right at the time when the leds are off for a very short time.

I notice that the bridge height is 11" and are measured without train traffic. How much deflection down does a train have on the bridge when passing because that opening is going to shrink some when something heavy is on it. Every driver should know the height of their vehicle, but that is a down and up road under the bridge, so you're going to height if the road on either side isn't flat longer than the vehicle passing under it. Wonder what happens to the signals if something is crossing the bridge? Oh, and this is a science and math question. 🙃

Before pressing play - Why? After pressing play - Nevermind. The thumbnail is what sells this.

Always wondered why the bells tend to stop ringing once the gates lower... 🤔

Because the noise of the train would drown them out?

It’s a newer type of bell combination, I have not seen many so far where the bell stops when the gate is all the way down.

@@JohnGeorgeBauerBuisI've been seeing this around my area for many years (I'm going to guess that it's been more than 30 years). It makes perfect sense, though. There's no need for the fake bell sounds to continue once the gates are down. These things are all controlled with electronics now, so greater nuances are possible in how such things function.

Damn! The illusion got me there for a second! I was wondering how drunk or high the signal maintainers were when they built this crossing lol 😂
