This and the next verse always stood out to me. Blue collar machinist who became pretty successful. got married , bought a house, 2yrs later in 2010 the bubble burst. We all went into debt keeping the doors open. The plan was for myself and the #2 guy to buy the shop. after 2 long years we came to the conclusion we couldn't. Now 8yrs later I'm still successful compared to many people I know. But I don't have that spark, my head isn't held high, i'm not really proud of of being a cog in someone else wheel...This second verse hits me hard.....

For those that don't know what this artistic trilogy means, let me try my best to explain (read until the end): Don't Cry, November Rain & Estranged are part of an intentional trilogy of music produced by GnR. They are based on a short story called "Without You" by Del James (which also has loose ties to Axl's own real life). At the very end of Estranged, the lyrics "Without You" are actually specifically mentioned. These songs are meant to be taken in that specific context. They have the same director for the videos and have musical tie ins such as drum fill ins and certain chord progression culminations. Summary: Don't Cry talks about the problems in their relationship (and others in the band). Think of it as starting like Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope... Lucas started in the middle of the story instead of with Episode 1. November Rain moves back in time and shows the wedding which takes place before Don't Cry. Then it flashed forward and shows his wife's death. So this is akin to the Star Wars Prequels and then flashes forward to the beginning of last Star Wars trilogy. Estranged is how he deals with all of the emotions. Either you let life bring you down and succumb to the sorrow or you fight back and take control of your own life. This would be akin Star Wars Episode 9. It's a masterpiece and Axl is a musical genius. Axl has a higher octave range than virtually every singer you've ever heard of from Mariah Carey to Freddie Mercury. Super talented individual. Cheers!

To me, this is their absolute best. The whole band is just killing it in all the passages of the song, which perfectly tells the message it wants to get across, not only in the lyrics, but with every instrumental change as well. Masterpiece! Thanks for doing this! ❤

Estranged is my favorite narrative epic from GNR. It is so underrated and I am grateful you reacted to it. There is no resolution. Time and time again even the song structure focuses on the struggle and that is what being estranged is all about. Never getting an closer, never getting any resolution. It is just such a perfectly articulate song about the subject matter.

I think this is their greatest song. I was age 17 when Appetite was released and 21 when Illusions 1&2 were released. GnR were such an important part of my youth. They were the greatest band on earth. Part of me is happy they didn’t continue with that dominance. I liken them to The Doors. In very short time, they made such a massive impact. They will always be one of the all time greats to me.

I was 16 when the Illusions released(and didn't know them prior to that bc rock music was pretty new to me) and loved them so much! Was my first band T-shirt I ever bought and wore that thing almost every day with lots of pride! Yeah, massively important for me as an evolving teenager. And still fantastic today! So much better than today's mainstream "music". Although my absolute favourite song is not this, but Civil War. But this is also a masterpiece.

I think this is Slash's most accomplished song technically. If you were to isolate his playing in the first section you'd hear that when the music goes quieter Slash is using controlled feedback from between his guitar and amp to create long undulating notes. It's a highly effective way to still have the guitar present in the quiet moments but without it overwhelming the vocals. Later in the song, when the dolphins turn up on the video, Slash uses volume swells to create sounds like whale song on his guitar. Slash's guitar parts on this song range from very intricate solos to these very delicate playing techniques and they prove he's more than a brash riff peddler. In fact, Axl specifically thanks Slash for his contributions on this song in the album's sleeve notes.

I consider this more of a masterpiece than November Rain as it's a heavy piano based song for which Slash had to write a guitar track to go with it which was absolute killer and Axl gave Slash huge credit for doing so. For an even better song of theirs which is in my opinion their best and very underrated is a song called Coma which is their longest ever at over ten minutes. There is no video for this song but there are ones with lyrics which are deep as the song is based on a true event from Axl's life. It is EPIC.

How many bands are going on almost 40 years? Short lived?

@D Tran they were broken up for many years and only a few albums. Axl then continued GNR with a completely different band lineup. For me those years it's no longer GNR to me. They've gotten back together briefly but overall short-lived compared to many others that have been together for decades.

What a stunning song from the Illusions twin album set with 30 tracks between the 2 double album sets …. This is from the second half in blue. It’s a killer pair of albums but you will see there are a few tracks that could be missed or released on the B-sides…. Pretty Tied Up, You Could Be Mine which is used in the Terminator2 movie. Excellent album and powerful too !!!!

I knew the song long before I watched the video. That video is cool and has a ton of cool footage, but I feel the cry and emotion in that song, and will always love it. It's also a fantastic piece of music, beautifully arranged.

Estranged is the finale of the the whole GNR triology and a pristine masterpiece in rock'n roll history, up there with Stairways to Heaven, Like a Rolling Stone, Sultans of Swing, Another brink in the wall etc. Thats the league we talkin about here.

guys time to try slash's solo project --- Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators- start with Anastasia. You will open up a whole new world you are so far missing out on, You do not need to limit yourselves to just GNR, even though they are great no doubt
