I didn't see where anyone had commented on it yet but the inspiration for the song is actually really sweet. The lead singer was looking through his girlfriend's closet & he saw a jacket he liked (she was a punk rock singer in the 80s), and commented about how cool it was. So she told him to keep it & said "if you have a closet full of clothes and you try to keep them all, your life will get very small. But if you have a full closet and someone sees something they like, if you give it to them, the world is a better place.". So the theme of the song is selflessness and altruism.

Amber said what I've believed my whole life (63 years old): 'I do not know what the song is about at this moment but I don't give one single darn cuz I'm lost in the sound'. It's agonizing for me to watch people struggle to figure out what a song is about while completely ignoring the sound. I STILL don't know the words or meaning of some of my favorite songs and it does not matter. I still love them!

When I was just out of bootcamp in the early 90's and in my first training command, I shaved my buddys hair like that and literally as soon as I finished, one of the higher up came blowing thought the barracks for a surprise inspection. Well. With no time to shave it off, we fell into formation and when one of the instructors passed him, all i heard was "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS FUCKING SHIT!!!". This was the classic Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1991 (also the current line-up) of Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Michael 'Flea' Balzary (bass), John Frusciante (guitar) and Chad Smith (drums)... their big hit record 'Bloodsugarsexmagik' in 1991 would sell 7x platinum. Singer Anthony Kiedis formed the Red Hot Chili Peppers in L.A. in the 80's w/ bassist Flea... the 2 had known each other since they were kids in school. Bassist Flea credited late RHCP guitarist Hillel Slovak for introducing him to rock music as a teen and the two musicians jammed together in the local scene... Anthony Kiedis was trying to be a Hollywood actor at the time (His dad was a minor actor)... but one night, he joined Flea and Hillel Slovak onstage and rapped a poem he had written and the venue went wild... That was how he became the singer and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were born... One night, the band decided to play an encore in the nude w/ a sock over their junk 😂 and that gave them headlines... However, Red Hot Chili Peppers were signed in 1984 just after Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons had left the band. RHCP released their debut album in 1984 but it was a poor effort w/ (late) guitarist Jack Sherman and drummer Cliff Martinez... Guitarist Hillel Slovak rejoined RCHP in 1985 to record their 2nd album 'Freaky styley' w/ producer George Clinton... However, the band was not appealing to audiences w/ their mix of 70's funk and punk rock... Drummer Jack Irons returned in 1987 on their 3rd album 'The uplift mofo party plan'... and it sold better w/ the singles - 'Fight like a brave' ... 'Behind the Sun'... However, hard drugs were effecting RHCP members and both Anthony Kiedis and Hillel Slovak were abusing he+++n ... and that led to tragedy in 1988 when guitarist Hillel Slovak was found dead in his home from an apparent he+++n OD... (Years later, RHCP depicted his struggle visually in the music video for the song 'Otherside') ... Drummer Jack Irons quit the band after Slovak's death. Attempting to get clean, Anthony Kiedis and Flea decided to carry on w/ the Red Hot Chili Peppers... they hired John Frusciante (guitar) who was still a teen, and Chad Smith (drums) and released the album "Mother's Milk" in 1989 - it was the first RHCP album to sell gold in the US. The cover was controversial featuring a topless female model. In 1991, RHCP worked w/ producer Rick Rubin on their 5th album 'Bloodsugarsexmagik' and it became their breakthrough album w/ MTV and radio singles - 'Give it away'... 'Under the Bridge' ... 'Breaking the girl' ... 'Suck my kiss'... Unfortunately, guitarist John Frusciante became agitated w/ success and quit the band in 1992... he would also start abusing he+++n after leaving RHCP in the 90's. The band had to tour w/ session guitarists and eventually hired Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro for their 1995 album 'One hot minute'... However, Navarro was fired in '97 for his own drug problems. In 1998, John Frusciante finally got clean and was asked to rejoin the Red Hot Chili Peppers... In 1999, they delivered another 7x platinum hit record 'Californication'... w/ the hit singles - 'Scar tissue'... 'Otherside'... 'Californication'... 'Around the world'. They followed it up w/ the 2002 album 'By the way'... which was a mellow record for RHCP... In 2006, RHCP released the double album 'Stadium arcadium'... w/ the hit singles - 'Dani California'... 'Snow (Hey oh)'... However, John Frusciante quit the band again by 2008 and Josh Klinghoffer (guitar) did the tour and joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers. RHCP remained successful w/ the albums "I'm with you" (2011) and 'The Getaway' (2016)... but they felt that Josh Klinghoffer was not the right guy for the band either, so he was fired by 2019. In 2020, RHCP announced that they were working on new music w/ guitarist John Frusciante returning once again... Their latest album 'Unlimited love' was released in 2022.

Probably one of the most memorable moments ever was seeing them live at Rock Werchter in 1992. It had been raining for most of the day. When the peppers were playing people in the moshpit for some reason started throwing mud around. At first the peppers were a bit baffled by it and asked if we did not like it. It was made clear to them we did like them a lot. As a reaction Anthony said "If you love us throw more mudd at us". For the next few minutes the stage was not visible as literaly thousands of people started throwing mudd at the stage ... (I admit being one of them) He also only wore a sock later on ....

This song and "Under the Bridge" are their best songs, and both are from the same album, which is probably one of the best albums of all time! This song use to make people go crazy in pubs and clubs back in the day!
