So much to unpack here. The Band were Bob Dylan's band for a while, and on their own created some of the most influential country-soul-rock music of all time. The Staple Singers are a legendary gospel R&B group. The Last Waltz was a concert film (one of Martin Scorcese's earliest) done by The Band near what was meant to be the end of their career and features them with a ton of great other artists like this, it's one of the best concert films ever.

If I'm not mistaken The last Waltz was the last performance of The Band. Lemon Helm went on to making albums in genres New Orleans Jazz to Blues to after throat cancer way down home on the farm country music. All of which sounds great.

Robbie bought the rights to this song from Levon(actually born Levan) I met Ms Annalee in Jonesboro AR when she was 90. Robbie bought alot of songs and claimed them as his own.

Mavis Staples. The greatest Soul singer that ever lived. Even Aretha was intimidated by her. When they sang a duet, Aretha had Mavis' vocals turned down because they were so powerful that they rose above hers. The older gentleman is her father -- Pops Staples.

I love Mavis Staples! Who couldn't!!!!!!

The singer/drummer is Levon Helm. He played Loretta Lynn's father in Coal Miners Daughter. You guys really need to watch that movie. The first time the real Loretta saw Levon in costume on the set, she started crying because he reminded her of her Dad so much. (Spoiler alert) At the fathers funeral, in the movie, the people started singing Amazing Grace. Levon stopped them and said that it should be sung as a call and response, like the mountain people would. He was the real deal. RIP Thanks for the great reaction, as usual!

Helm and Brimley play a couple of close to retirement railroad workers that work at a maintenance/fuel depot in a small rural, Arkansas town that depends on the railroad for their existence. They find out the railroad plans to switch to air freight and close the line, so they steal a locomotive and go to see the owner/builder/prime shareholder who is in the process of retiring himself, shifting control to his son-in-law, and "kidnap" him, at HIS suggestion. Most would probably find it a bit boring, but I really enjoyed it.

Levon also played Jane Fonda's husband in The Dollmaker. You can find the movie right here on YT. Fonda was magnificent; the most realistic performance of a mountain woman ever to hit the screen. Levon was excellent as well.

This song, the Weight, is written by guitar player Robbie Robertson of the Band. It was recorded as part of the Last Waltz, the last time the original lineup of the Band played together on Thanksgiving 1976. The Band, 4 guys from Canada and an Arkansas boy. They have a great catalog of songs like Chest Fever, Ophelia, Life is a Carnival, Up on Cripple Creek.....a long list of great songs. They were joined in this concert by Ronnie Hawkins (their first ensemble), Bob Dylan (who they backed up when he first went electric), Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters.......and the Staples Singers. The Staples were a family gospel group headed by Pops, Mavis and some other siblings. They're known for I'll Take You There, Do It Again, Respect Yourself, Freedom Highway......you definitely need to check out both bands. Robbie Robertson was the son of a Cayuga and Mohawk mother and lived on the Six Nations Reserve in Canada southwest of Toronto during his youth. R🎉obertson is known for his career as a guitarist and composer. He rose to fame with the Band, and 'The Weight', for which he was the primary writer.

Levon Helm was SO underrated...A great Drummer/Singer...

The lady you just heard is the great Mavis Staples, and the older gentleman is her father. You owe to yourself to listen to this awesome family trio. It doesn’t get any more soulful or gospel sounding than I’ll Take You There and Respect Yourself, two of their best.

The Band members were originally Ronnie Hawkins’ band in the early 1960’s . They became Bob Dylan’s band, eventually went solo as “The Band “. What you watched is from “ The Last Waltz”, a film of their last concert. There were many guest artists, which included the Staples Singers.I suggest that you also listen to the studio version of this song as it has a different feel. I also suggest that you listen to studio versions of “Up On Cripple Creek”, “Ophelia”, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, “The Shape I’m In”, “It Makes No Difference “(the Last Waltz version of this is good). The Band are quite under appreciated, in my opinion. They’re one of my favorite listens.

Yes, first 2 I would start with is "Up On Cripple Creek" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". (Also like "The Shape I'm In").

Mavis Staples is an absolute force of music. She’s still singing in top form. The older man is Pops Staples. Mavis and the other two backup singers are his daughters.

The drummer, Levon Helm, also either won, or was nominated for an academy award for his portrayal of Loretta Lynn’s father in the 1982 big screen release-Coal Miner’s Daughter. He was the only non-Canadian in the group. Born and raised in Arkansas. The Last Waltz was directed by Martin Scorsese. Any fan should see it. 👍❤️

Garth Hudson - keyboards & saxophone. Richard Manuel keyboards, lap steel guitar & vocals. Robbie Robertson is a fantastic guitar player & song writer. Sadly, only three of the folks from both groups are still with us - Robbie, Garth, and of course Mavis. I was lucky enough to see her open for Dylan in Buffalo a few years prior to the pandemic, and she's still a force of nature. She did Wade in the Water and sang the last verse from the back of the stage without a mic and it was enough to give the entire theatre goosebumps.

The film The Last Waltz has so much talent packed on to one stage and the respect and love they have for each other is emotional. The background interviews hit hard and I am grateful for all. I believe there is only one member of the band left and the world will never see this energy and love for music again.

The original from the Band is a great song. The Staples added another dimension to it.

My favorite version is the live version from the Festival Express tour in Canada, but whatever version, I always get the chills.

The Band was Bob Dylan’s long time early backing band. The decided to retire from the Road (touring). They threw a last concert n invited a lot of friends. Martin Scorsese filmed it as he is a huge music/Dylan fan. (He’s done about 3-4 films on Dylan!) So many greats are there! Joni Mitchell, Dr John, VAN MORRISON, Dylan.

There is no WAY anyone that’s popular now could EVER write lyrics like this now.

I grew up listening to the Staples and Mavis Staples, the lady with 'the voice', is to me the best gospel singer ever and on of the best singers ever bar none. This Band is a legendary group with a story and incredible talent. The pairing of the two groups was and is, genius. I'm so glad you two got to hear and respond to this video and it made me happy to see your faces and hear you comments as the song progressed. Thank you and God Bless you and your family.

The Staples were a family gospel rhythm and blues singers. The Band a Canadian American rock band formed in 1967. The Band originally recorded this in 1968. This was a later version they did with The Staples

That Queen singing lead for the Staples is none other than Mavis Staples! She’s 82 now and did a FABULOUS song in 2018 with Hozier called “Nina Cried Power”. The guitarist, the one whose double-necked instrument you admired, is Robbie Robertson. He is a member of one of Canada's First Nations and immensely talented. He didn't release his first solo record for over a decade after The Band broke up, but what an amazing album. "Broken Arrow" is gorgeous, from the "Robbie Robertson" self-titled album. "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" is mysterious, sweaty, dark New Orleans-tinged. Give them a try. He does duets with U2 and with B.B. King, and Peter Gabriel sings backing vocals on one track.

Check out his 1994 release Music for The Native Americans. Robbie Robertson & The Red Road Ensemble. A live concert featuring this album is on KZread. Also check out the 2002 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, with Robbie and 5 major Utah tribes of Native Americans.

Mavis Staples is a legend. She just turned 80 and is still performing. The Last Waltz is a 1978 film about The Band by Martin Scorsese. They call it a fiddle in the south. Robbie Robertson (the guy playing the double neck guitar) is of indigenous heritage and has some really good solo songs.

Yes. The Band is a whole musical universe unto themselves. They were originally The Hawks, the backing band for rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. Bob Dylan picked them up to serve as his band when he went electric. And, as others have said, you need to check out the film, The Last Waltz. Easily one of the greatest concert films ever. You also owe it to yourself to check out The Band's original recording of this song. It's masterful in itself, but it really makes you realize what The Staples Singers brought to it. The version in this video starts with drummer Levon Helm (The Band's only non-Canadian, hailing from Arkansas) on vocals. Mavis Staples smashes the second verse, and the gentleman who sings after her is Pops Staples (Amber dug his voice). The guy who reminded you of Joe Cocker is Band bassist Rick Danko. The Band is rounded out by guitarist Robbie Robertson, pianist Richard Manuel, and organist Garth Hudson. They got their name from their time with Dylan. Sadly after the tape ran out, the artists continued to play for another 2 hrs. And unfortunately none of it got on tape.

Levon Helms (the drummer and singer for The Band) was a very special man. He has some wonderful songs and even released a few great albums in the 2000s after his battle with throat cancer and before his death. Definitely check out his Electric Dirt album.

I been listenin to "The Band", since they were new... When the "last waltz" came out, it was an all-encompassing album, because it included almost everybody in the music industry. It is almost impossible to find a more talented bunch of musicians that these guy's.. nor a more perfect album.. This song in particular really resonates..

A must hear is the Staple Singers singing "I'll Take You There"

It brings me much joy to see youngsters validate the music I loved as a kid and teenager. Ain't nothing wrong with kids today that a good mentor can't fix in 5 minutes.

Rick Danko, the bassist for The Band and the singer on the fourth verse about Chester and his dog Jack was The Band’s unsung underrated greatness. So soulful and raw and extremely talented. Loved the Joe Cocker comparison. Great reaction!!!!

Read an article that related Mavis asking her father why they should appear in nightclubs. She said that Mahalia would never sing in a nightclub. Her father replied that people in nightclubs would not come to church to hear them and that it was right to take the Gospel to the nightclub if people were willing to listen. That is going to the highways and byways to invite people in.

The Last Waltz is probably the best concert film ever made.

Bless you young ones. I so love your reaction to hearing this great music. When you said, "Oh my gosh, the woman who sang........" I had my own laugh out loud and tearing up at the same reaction to your reaction. That is how The Staple Singers, especially Mavis Staple having been making people feel for decades. 😊 The Band also an amazing, each member multi-talented group. I'm sure others have explained and provided you with all the details that you should know. I enjoyed this very much. 😊✌💙

I love that poppa Staple was singing in this. Sometimes we overlook his talent when we are busy marveling over Mavis' voice.

The Last Waltz is one of the best rock films ever. The amount of high profile artists who joined The Band on stage that night, is staggering. The live versions from the film are much better than the studio versions. Every song on this film is a classic. You should definitely check out more. I recommend watching the film, myself

Mavis & Pop Staples, they were largely a gospel group, and Levon Helm is a very unique singer. This is a good, good track. The Band is a group that used to back Bob Dylan years ago.

The Band were an incredible group of musicians. The Last Waltz is an amazing film.

One of the best songs ever made! The Band was an awesome group! The Band and The Staples were 2 groups who combined on this song. It was a great collaboration!

Guys meet Mavis Staples , and Miss Mavis meet our guys. She refers to her audience as " Beautiful Spirits" and she and her family, The Staple Singers, are legendary. Please do more Mavis. She is...SOUL and she sounds like nobody else.

Got that right.people consider Aretha Franklin one of the greatest voices in music. Mavis IMO In her prime( even now Mavis can still kick ass that voice is still there)had a more soulful voice no disrespect to Aretha. Pops Staple & his Daughters don't get the the recognition they deserve

The band got together for one more live show after being broke up for years. They invited a bunch of musicians and groups to perform with them, including the staples. They also played songs with Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Bob dlyan, Joni Mitchell and many more. Check out the whole concert. It's called The Last Waltz. The band is a group of musicians half from Alabama and half from Canada that made for a great combo

I'm a New Yorker- raised in the Bronx residing in Manhattan -so that means I've never been in a place like that for a any type of concert but I have had daydreams and night dreams about it- some involving me onstage there. I'm a retired attorney and a non-retired hobbyist guitarist 🎸

This tells the story of a guy who visits Nazareth, and is asked by his friend Fanny to visit several of her friends. "The Weight" that is his load are all these strange people he promised he would check on. The song was never a big hit, but it endures as a classic rock staple.

The Last Waltz was The Band's "Farewell Concert". They invited a lot of their friends, including The Staples, to perform songs with them during the show. This was a one-off pairing between the two groups. The Staples are a family group. Mavis was the female lead, her sisters doing harmony. Their dad, Pops, is their male lead singer. Both The Band and The Staples are legends!

If y'all haven't seen the movie "the Waltz" it's time! The Band was a compilation of some of the greatest "guest jams" from Van Morrison to the Staples! The movie is the live concert of all these amazing musicians, it's proof that even the greatest are better as a band when they play with their souls! Too many great songs to just suggest a few, you won't be disappointed! Music the greatest healer...I love seeing younger generations finding & loving classic rock!

Welcome to the Staple singers. And the Band that created this kind of music. As if it's 100 years old.

The lady who sang the second verse is Mavis Staples. When Paul Mccartney was given a Kennedy Center Honor, she and James Taylor performed Let It Be together. Please check it out when you get a chance.

This selection gets 10/10 from me. The Staples or the Staples Singers as they were called first are their own band with their own hits.

As much as this will sound like oversimplification; this is an outstanding example of mutual respect, friendship, and admiration between these artists and the young couple watching this for the first time. This is how I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Performers color didn’t matter, it was the music that moved you regardless of the genre. If you grew up singing in church you knew about The Staples singers. If you were a folkie you knew about Dylan and his backing band (The Band). When you hear them together it becomes obvious there’s not much that separates us.

Pops Staple was a treasure. Mavis Staple is still singing and fantastic.

I love this song. Others band members who has singing drummers are “Ozark Mountain Daredevils”- Jackie Blue, and Rare Earth “Get Ready”. They’re two separate groups .The Staple Singers are a Family. There’s the Father / 3 Daughters . They have many great songs -“I’ll Take You There”, “If You’re Ready Come Go with Me”, Let’s Do It Again” “Respect Your Self “and many more.

The Band incorporated Country Rock, which was a big influence upon Rock with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, and even the Eagles ("Lying Eyes" for example). The Staples were more Soul and R&B. Two genres together worked so well here. Love the song.

Children, this is not just a band, it is ThE BAND.

The Band is the band. Everyone playing and singing, excepting The Staple Singers, are members of The Band. Nobody “put the together. Like most bands of the era, these guys formed themselves organically. “The Last Waltz” was a movie (highly recommended) directed by Martin Scorcessi (sp ??). This was a filming of The Band’s final performance. There were many guest performers as part of this incredible concert, owing to the broad influence that The Band had on the music scene of the time. These guys were fantastic musicians, and brought a truly unique sound to popular music. Listen to “The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down,” probably their most covered song.

The most popular cover of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down was recorded by Joan Baez in 1971. She learned it by ear and got some of the lyrics wrong. Her version went to number one on Billboard's adult contemporary chart and number three on the Hot 100.

“The Weight” has been covered more than Dixie. The number of different artists working in different genre’s who have covered “The Weight” is amazing. I saw Cassandra Wilson (jazz) do a version live at the Blue Note off 4th in Manhattan. Very cool.

Saying Scorsese directed the movie is a stretch,, He filmed it at a live concert.. not a lot of directing went on..

I have been waiting for this one!! This is the perfect example of what I’ve always said. Music can bring anyone together. No matter who you are, where you’re from, how old you are etc. The Bands song “The Weight” was a hit in its own right. Adding The Staples Singers (a gospel group) took this song from a 10/10 and raised it to 100/10. Two different bands who sing 2 different types of music and who are obviously 2 different races w 2 different styles and they came together and played off of each other so good to make a good song great. People we can rise above the hatred in this country if we just try. There’s absolutely no reason we can’t get along and videos like this prove it. So glad y’all reacted this this one.

No, The Band and The Staples Singers were not an ongoing act. The Staples Singers were brought together with The Band for just this one performance and recording. Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson and The Band collaborated on a rockumentary of The Band's last concert, titled The Last Waltz. It took place at Winter Land in San Francisco in 1976 and featured many of the greatest singers and musicians of all time, including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Yong, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield and others. After the concert, The Band and Martin Scorsese felt they needed one more song for the documentary, so they went to a sound stage and filmed The Band and the Staples Singers doing The Weight and Emmy Lou Harris and the Band performing Evangeline. These last two songs were interspersed with The Band and the other performers mentioned above. The result: In my not so humble opinion, the greatest rockumentary ever. I think many people will agree.

"Up on Cripple Creek" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". I think you would enjoy both of those since they are primarily sang by the drummer Levon Helm RIP.

The Band is SO underrated! Every knows their songs, but often can't name them! It's just so odd. And this collaboration with the Staples is just incredible! So glad you found it!

The Band was a Canadian/American group that mixed rock with other American musical genres like country, R&B, and gospel. This type of music would be called Americana today. They spent their early years as a backing band for various people, most notably Bob Dylan, so when they struck out on their own, they decided to just call themselves "The Band" The Staple Singers were a seminal gospel group consisting of Roebuck "Pops" Staples and his daughters.. The had a second round of success in the early 70s making soul music. The Last Waltz was a film of The Band's final concert. It featured a lot of guest stars, as well as some interview footage. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and is considered one of the great rock concert films of all time

Thank you for this. I have heard the record version MANY times before but this live version while not as "perfect" is much more perfect.

No lie; no hyperbole. This version of this song is likely my favorite song of all time! The Staples kill it, especially Mavis and Pops. And hey, The Band more than hold their own! Oh, and I will add you need to dig into The Band by themselves, and the Gospel of The Staple Singers.

The Members of the Band absolutely adored the Pa and the Staples and was thrilled to do this collaboration with them.

The singer and drummer for The Band is Levon Helm (RIP). If you ever have or will watch the Mark Wahlberg movie Shooter, the old guy who analyzes the shot for him, Mr. Rate, is Levon Helm.

This was the first and last time this configuration of 'The Band' played together. There were six people who were capable of being a lead singer. Talk about being overloaded with talent !! All you have to do is listen. Amazing performance and probably the best version of this song.

This is my definition of "Grown folks music." Plain & simple. Love this song so much! So much to love & appreciate right here.

Rick Danko (the guy who reminds you of Joe Cocker) really hits it out of the park in “It Makes No Difference”. It’s a love song that has a yearning of sadness that Danko’s voice captures perfectly. Plus a great sax solo at the end that Amber will absolutely DIG!

I was able to see the Band at IU back in the day - they blew me away. I became a fan right away. The guy playing the double neck guitar is Robbie Robertson - he's the one who wrote the song.

The Band were pioneers of what came to be known as Americana. There is a touching documentary of Levon Helms (drummer) latter days. One scene has Mavis Staples coming to visit. You should see the joy on his face.

Levon helm is my favorite singer. Saw him at Bonnaroo in 2008. The Last waltz is just incredible

I'm crying with JOY!!! You hit the nail on the head cause Levon, the singer is from Arkansas and he really does have that back porch sound. And MAVIS!!! I saw this movie when I was 12 years old with my Grandmother. She thought it was gonna be a movie about dancing. Ha! It was my introduction to The Staples and it started my absolute admiration of The Band & The Staples. I was 12, going to record stores looking for more of their music. Your reaction to Rick is beautiful. You gotta do a reaction to Rick singing Stagefright. I think you will love it. Post The Band, Levon used to hold concerts in his barn called the Midnight Ramble.

Absolutely spot-on in every regard. Thanks so much for including a suggestion to react to “Stage Fright”, my personal favorite from The Band. Rick Danko’s voice wasn’t the most polished or refined to say the least, but he always sang with such passion and genuine outpouring of emotion and understated dignity. Bass, fiddle, etc. What a talented , great musician.

The Band is likely your favorite musician’s favorite band and they’re legends. This performance is special with the Staples but much of The Band’s work is equally as good and really worth checking out. Up on Cripple creek, chest fever, unfaithful servant, it makes no difference, the night they drove ol Dixie down…the list goes on. These guys are absolute icons, supremely talented, and very influential

Mavis is the only one still with us and at 80 still can bring it. Mavis would be a great Female Friday pick. For Christmas you have to do Staples, Who Took the Merry out of Christmas

Very seldom does a performance give you chills and make your eyes water, this did both!
