Keep in mind this is the Sailor Moon we could of had. Despite differing opinions, I appreciate the work that Toon Makers and Renaissance-Atlantic put into this project that was commissioned by Bandai and Toei. For a long time, people assumed that this Americanized pitch was solely because of America, when in reality, Toei asked for this LOL But they failed to provide the right budget to Renaissance/Toon Makers, so they worked with what they were given. No hate to those companies
The full pilot episode of Saban Moon/Toon Makers Sailor Moon (1994) is now available separate from the documentary!

It's because in this period of time anime existed to bring manga to life and had actual budget and story, while in the USA these cartoons were basically seen as long toy commercials, created as fast and cheap as possible. They really wanted to sell those dolls and flying boats lol. That being said I'm just studying animation myself and learning about its history and I'm amazed how much of this art form comes straight from Disney. There was a 10-20 year period in which everything Disney put out was incredible and everything else kinda sucked. And the first studios that broke the mold and made quality animation were also staffed with people trained at Disney studios.

This feels like a very high quality western fan project from the 90's that got lost in the back of a vintage store that collects vinyls, mix tapes, old cameras and vhs movies. I'm honestly impressed with the quality. After hearing some opinions on how it was "poorly done" I would say the execution overall for its time is pretty good-made me laugh a bit though as soon as tuxedo mask pulled up 💀 I don't even remember him saying anything? He just showed up and left 😭 also this is a point in internet and anime history! It amazes me how far you had to go to get this and the sheer will you have♡

@@sailorcat the animation feels like the way Sky Dancers does if that makes sense? Either way yeah I get what u mean. It's not great but to me it's good for what the end result ended up looking like. When I was told that it wasint great I wasn't expecting much- but it impressed me watching it for the first time, also that cgi looked somewhat well during Sailor Moons transformation. Wasint thinking they'd do a decent job in cgi but they did. There's a bit that bothers me abt this pilot episode for sure but as someone who is taking digital media classes I just found it over the bar a lil bit for my expectations. I was expecting it to be a bit more janky with its own poorly done voice overs but it's not that bad.

I work as an animator in Japan and France. I read the warning in the description. I understand that they had a small budget but that does not explain everything. There is a real lack of drawing skills. Japanese studios also have very low budgets, but the reason they can handle low budget productions is simply because they give more budget to make good drawings and don't waste money animating actions that could stand completely still. I've seen a lot of videos and people laughing about low budget Indian, Korean or Eastern European series, I think we also have the right to laugh at what we did ourselves. This is how we can improve. Let's laugh then. It is not forbidden. And let's use this example to improve ourselves.

Regarding the quality of the animation and live-action scenes, it's important to remember that this was only the pilot version. If you watch the pilots of animated shows such as The King of the Hill, the animation quality is pretty rough. I'm sure the whole action and animation would have eventually been smoother, had this actually been qualified as a full-fledged series. I'm happy that we got the anime but it certainly would have been interesting, had the whole "Saban" Moon come to fruition.

This is the lost media find of the year! I’m so happy that you managed to find this and the music video in such great quality. I remember first hearing about this from RebelTaxi’s top 10 failed animated pilots video and was intrigued as I love live action/animation hybrids specially in the 90s. But now seeing the pilot I’m kinda sad we didn’t get this version it’s so fun, has pretty good cel animation, and is drenched in 90s cheese, it would’ve been an alright alternative until we got the anime dub but that’s just my opinion as Pan Pizza said in his video “But don’t you want it to succeed just so we can look back on it and laugh? yeah you do.”

@@BottomOfTheDumpsterFire for me it would be 1. Saban Moon 2. Popeye 3. Sesame Street Wicked Witch 4. Chris Farley Shrek Why Saban Moon is number one is cause that one seemed more impossible and less likely to be released to the general public than say the Sesame Street Wicked Witch episode since people were starting tape stuff off TV around the time the episode aired so it was a little more likely for that one to be released unofficially in some way.

Takeuchi-sensei was instrumental in turning Sailor Moon into a live action series only nine years later. It was the first thing she did after reacquiring the rights. My guess is she was suitably impressed by what the manga could become. Don't forget there was significant buzz around a potential feature film and at least two name actors were attached to the pitch at one point. This pilot no doubt had an influence.

I’m sure she wouldn’t completely hate it but probably find it fascinating considering it’s basically a cultural retelling of her own work. Kinda like how The Brothers Grimm stories have has been constantly retold through the lens of different ethnic groups. If I were her, I’d be flattered that my story is so iconic that it could be interpreted in different countries and still hold its own 🤷🏾‍♀️

@K Nicky interpreted or completely different from orginal? no wonder if the original author dislikes it. fascinated? sure. flattered? idk. allowing it? dont think so. she even refuses the idea of having hollywood movie adaption because it messes too much with the original. so clearly she cherishes her work and would like it stay original. the fact that we have sailor moon crystal as sailor moon anniversary celebration is so that we can have an anime closer to the original manga compared to the 90's anime. duh i personally glad it is cancelled. imagine a painting something wholeheartedly and so personal for, being bought by people just to repaint the whole thing into something else in, would you like it or not? we dont know if she feel flattered or not, but if she doesn't thats ok because its her work, not your work, u dont get to tell someone how to feel about their work, do u? 🤷🏻‍♀️
