It can be, especially when you work with an immigration lawyer to handle everything for you :)

The NIF isn’t required for Digital Nomads to apply. Once you’re in Portugal you can get your own. Fiscal representatives are no longer required.

For the D7 Visa you are required to deposit €12,000 in a Portuguese bank account, but not for the Digital Nomad Visa :)

There is not a one-year digital nomad visa for Portugal at the moment. But you don't have to stay the whole 2 years with this one!

Yes, this digital nomad visa is for non-EU nationals. If you meet the requirements after living in Portugal for five years, you may be eligible for permanent residency. You will have visa-free travel access through Schengen as a resident in Portugal

If the Portuguese embassy in a country is too busy to reply for months, can one rather get another Schengen country's Residence Permit via Digital Nomad visa such as Croatia, Estonia, Greece and then apply from the Portuguese embassy in that country?

You have to apply in your country's consulate office inicially BEFORE going to Portugal.

You must apply for the visa in your country of residence. So, if you are a residence in Greece, Estonia, or Croatia and have an established residence there, then you may apply.

Unfortunately no, you can't even go to an office that's in a different city in your home country. You need to go to the closest embassy to your permanent address in your country of residence to apply. This makes it a little complicated for a nomad, we hadn't been to Canada for years at the time of applying but we had to come back and apply at the office closest to the permanent residence we have listed on all of our official documentation. It is what it is! Good luck.

The initial residence permit is 2 years with a renewal of 3 years. After living in Portugal for a total of 5 years you may apply for permanent residency
