Official Harbour Tour of Portsmouth Dockyard, Home of the Modern Royal Navy (Dec 2021) [4K]

[4K] Harbour Tour of Portsmouth Dockyard with full official commentary, join us for unrivalled views of Britain's modern frigates, destroyers and helicopter carriers, as well as historic buildings and the dramatic skyline including two aircraft carriers the Prince of Wales and Queen Elizabeth
The history of the British Navy at Portsmouth dates back 1,200 years to its earliest days under King Alfred the Great in the 860s. The wide natural inlet in the coastline is a flooded river valley protected by a deep narrow entrance on two sides of the dockyard and at Gosport, which makes an ideal harbour.
Roman and Saxon strongholds were constructed on the northern shore to defend against Viking attacks and to protect trade, but the harbour's first permanent fort, Portchester Castle, was built after the Norman Conquest in 1066.
Portsea Island, at the entrance to Portsmouth harbour, was used as a mustering station for armies during the wars with France, and by the late 12th century a small town had grown on the south-western corner of the Island to accommodate workers and to service troops. In 1194 King Richard I granted this town, known as Portsmouth, a Royal Charter to construct a dockyard, and in 1212 King John protected the new dockyard with a great wall.
In our 40 minute Harbour Tour you will see many of the fortifications that were built to protect Portsmouth over the centuries. There is full commentary with fascinating facts on the dockyard including HMS Warrior, HMS Victory and the Mary Rose as well as the more recent buildings and ships such as Gunwharf Quays, Spinnaker Tower and the tow aircraft carriers Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales that are currently docked in Portsmouth.
Harbour tours are included in Ultimate Explorer tickets only, however, tickets can be purchased on the day from the Harbour Tours Office.

Would be better if the commentary was carried out in the bridge or somewhere enclosed, thereby eliminating the wind noise and giving a more intelligible one. Otherwise, a very good tour.

It wasn't a great day for picking up the sound, if we were to do this again we would record the sound separately inside the boat

18:30, what is this for ship?

The ship at18:30 is HMS Bristol, a Type 82 destroyer and the only vessel of her class to be built for the Royal Navy. The ship was built to escort CVA-01 Aircraft Carriers but the building of these Aircraft Carriers was cancelled due to defence spending cuts and no more Type 82 Destroyers were built. This ship saw service in the Falklands but was then converted to a training ship in 1987. It was during one of these traing missions that irreparable damage to a power turbine occured and the ship was left in Harbour.
