Motorcycle tour of The Isle of Wight on a BMW 1200 GSA and Triumph 900 GT Pro - Episode 2

Фильм және анимация

In this episode we check into our hotel in and explore The Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The working Naval base has a part of it opened to the public and contains lots of historical museums and exhibits including perhaps the Navy's most famous ship HMS Victory. We'd seen it several years ago and decided it would be worth another visit, sadly when we arrived we found it covered in scaffolding undergoing a major maintenance project that was planned to take years! Disappointed, we opted instead to check out the Mary Rose museum which turned out to be an amazing experience and a fascinating insight into the Tudor period and the fate of King Henry V111's favourite warship. Beer O'Clock saw us sample some great local ales and wander down to the regenerated area of Gunwharf Quays for a sunset pizza.
A very hot night gave us a fitful sleep disturbed by a few inebriated sailors and tourists emptying out of the local pubs! The following day we boarded the Wightlink Ferry for the crossing to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight - allegedly the most expensive ferry crossing in the world per mile. If that is not the case we'd be really interested to find out!
We disembarked and took a leisurely ride to our first stop - Ryde Pier - mainly to ride to the end of the pier, the second longest in the country and the oldest seaside pleasure pier in existence in the UK. A welcome ice cream on the beach in Sandown and a final stop to explore the Brading Roman Villa, one of the best preserved Roman villas in the UK.
We hope you enjoy this short video and as ever, if you do, please give it a thumbs up, share and comment. Thanks again for watching!

Some folks say gentrification is a bad thing - but in the case of Portsmouth Harbour, it's turned the area into a brilliant destination. So much to take in within a short walk of your hotel - including a proper pub with real ale on tap. Excellent choice for an overnight stay. Cheers

Ferry companies certainly know how to charge. You should try the steam packet (racket) company for a ticket to the Isle of Man during TT fortnight. We loved our visit to Portsmouth dockyard, we looked around Warrior that you could see from that beautiful hotel room. You certainly hit some great weather. Another great vid. Hopefully Carol and I should be sailing by the Spinnaker tower in a few weeks on our twice postponed Picos trip.

Just a slight correction on a comment made after the Mary Rose visit. While the ship was still undergoing conservation there was a museum just inside the dock gates. Quite a good exhibition for the time although there was less material available and there were no videos or interactive displays. You really need a full day to see round the historic dockyard as there are many other parts to it especially Boathouse 4 where wooden boats are on restored and completed ones on display. With more time you can add on the Submarine museum at Gosport which is accessed by water bus included in the ticket price. the last time I visited I found it easier to park at Gosport and take the water bus to the dockyard.

Sympathy for the ferry cost ..... Imagine what it`s like for those of us that live here LOL, especially with a 7.5mtr motorhome .... without the C&CC discount a return journey can cost in excess of £250, but that is one of the penalties of living on a beautiful island. Looking forward to the next episode.

It’s a very expensive stretch of water to cross, it used to be cheaper to cross on the Dover Calais route. The route at one time was operated by Sealink, which Thatcher sold off; great give away of public assets, Sea Containers became the new owners of Sealink, they sold the Isle of Wight operations for more than they paid for the entire Sealink operation. This included services to Ireland from Wales and Scotland, maybe Liverpool, services to Netherlands and services to France/Belgium from Dover, Folkestone, Newhaven and Portsmouth, may have included other ports serving western France. The great give away of public assets, one of many. Hence extortionate fares to IOW, feel extremely sorry for the residents. It’s a metaphor for the U.K.

Another really enjoyable vlog from you both, roads not too busy and a clear blue sky, I was shocked when you said that the Mary Rose restoration had cost £27.000,000 and it still looked like it had just been lifted from the bottom of the Solent, or did I miss something? The Isle of Wight tempts us for a visit after seeing it when returning or sailing from Southampton when cruising, passed it so many times along with the fascinating forts in the Solent, maybe one day but as you pointed out it is expensive getting across, yes I've priced it, anyway back to your ride out, nothing better than riding in perfect conditions exploring the country and just love the look of the Triumph, in fact Triumph are producing some exciting models from what I've seen recently. Thanks very much Mark - What a great place to grow up in! We found it a brilliant biking area 👍 there was no need to strap the bikes on the ferry, that normally happens on longer, rougher crossings. Thanks for watching! 😀👍

I always use Red funnel from Southampton. Always cheaper for bikes

Thanks Martin - we have used that route a few years ago but as we were in Portsmouth we decided to try Wightlink 😳! Next time, back to Red Funnel! 😀👍

Hi Anthony, I did sit on the 1200 at the NEC motorbike show last year and during a visit to Triumph in Hinckley. You’re right - It’s a lovely bike but probably a bit big for me. I really love my 900 so can’t see me changing anytime soon but who knows? 😉😀

Got to admit £62 for a motorcycle on the ferry is a bit stingy! But you know, good old rip off Britain!

    You’re right Neil! I think they’ve got a monopoly ☹️ so there’s no choice 🤷‍♂️
