This is a Real World Preview of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. As always, this isn’t a full review since we were using pre-production units, but it’s pretty close to one. I got my hands on the R6 Mark II and NEW RF 135mm f1.8 at a Canon Press Event in San Diego. The biggest questions being answered in this video are, what’s changed, is it worth the upgrade from the R6 and is it a mini Canon EOS R3?

Great review. Jared is exceptional at explaining things and I appreciate the honesty. Good job!
Looking forward to a head-to-head between the R6 and R6 II sometime in the future in both stills and video! I think Canon's decision to price the R6II the same as the R6 was a good thing since I've been thinking about getting a used R6 in the near future. I was considering an R or RP but the autofocus on the R6 makes it a much better choice for me. Thanks Jared!
Just bought this for my father…. He’s not new to photography, but he’s been away from it for a little while. Thanks for the great pREVIEW of the R6 Mk II. Learned a lot and helped me, a casual shooter, make a decision on it. Great vid JP!
The best review among all. Clearly explaining and showing what it does and what he sees. Noone does that. You are simply the best reviewer. Many many thanks for your reviews.
#igotthisfar. I have the canon R, ive been thinkn of getting the R3, would this camera be a better deal if i shoot both photos and video?
Jared, based on what I've seen on most of the R6 Mk 2 "first impression videos", I believe an upgrade from the R6 to the Mk 2 doesn't make a lot of economic sense, unless you need the very fast shutterless frame rates (40 FPS vs 20 FPS) or the removal of the 30 minute time limit. The other improvements likely don't have a big impact on most standard use cases. I will say that the improvements from the R to the R6 were quite significant. Thanks for your review!
Jared and Stephen have the best gear reviews on KZread hands down. Their RAWtalk podcast is an awesome complement to their videos too!
This is a lovely refresh. As an amateur who doesn’t make money from my photos I won’t be upgrading but I’m glad to see an upgrade for those who need it!
I'm mainly a photo guy so I'm sticking with my R6 but the video improvements, 40fps and buffer size make the Mark II very impressive, especially at the same price as the original.

Perfect review and detailed explanation of all the specs. THANKS!!!
Thanks for a great review (or preview in this case) vid once again Jared. With this and your comparison vids vs R8 and R6 mk1 I have definatly decided to go with this camera next. Its what I need for the field im in. 😊😊
Your reviews are always interesting and easy to understand and this one is not an exception. Thank you very much Jared, now I'm more convinced that I want to get my hands on this baby.
Thanks for this initial review. I'm not doing a lot of videos so I'll keep my R6 for now.
Always love your videos.. energetic and to the point ! ❤

Jarid, I think this is a fantastic and very welcome camera into the Canon Lineup. In my opinion this is what the original R6 should had always been. Well done on this one Canon 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I use an R6 professionally and have an R as my second body. I already listed my R for sale a month ago to get a second R6 because I honestly love the camera but now I'm just going to get the new mark II. I shoot weddings primarily along with nightlife and automotive work so this will be a perfect little upgrade. Just recently I've had 2 clients ask that I do both photo and video of an event and the one thing that missed me off and was the only thing I missed from my 5d IV was the ability to quickly switch from photo to video. With the R6 it was such a pain in the ass to look down at the mode dial and switch it over, especially since these are very low light scenarios inside of nightclubs. This will solve that issue and I can't wait to get one!
exceptional content every time. many thanks, Davy
Very good review and good points
Informative [pre] review. Hopefully some of the new features will be added to the R5 via a firmware update. Thanks, Stefano
Canon is back on track! great review!
Good review, lots to consider. Love the outtakes at the end!!!
Great review, thank you Jared.
Great review ever. Thank you, Sir.
Late night Fro release....I'm here for it!
Brilliant review. Covers everything I could want to know. Thanks.
Loved the review, Jared! You are great.
I think the blinking LCD frame will be handy for selfie video when you're farther from the LCD. As for keeping or selling the R6: I'm keeping mine. It's my main KZread cam and backup for my R5 in stills. If I want video stuff like 4K/120, I just switch to the R5. You didn't mention that the new button layout allows multiple custom modes for video, which the original R6 doesn't allow.
Great review. Just ordered mines today 11/23. Replacing the 6d mark ii. Hope I like it. 😊
16:45, the OM-1 does that also, ProCaptureSH2, up to 1.4 seconds back in time (you can tweak it yourself), full AF tracking, subject and eye detection at up to 50 fps, RAW and you must not select the image in body from that raw burst package, you can select it later in LrC or C1 or whatever else you are using like e.g. ACDsee. And the OM-1 has a stacked BSI sensor spitting out an awesome image quality.
Jared you have the best reviews because you don’t blow smoke up the manufacturers butts like other KZreadrs. You break down what the marketing features are actually like in real life and the limitations of them. Looks like the R6 MK 1 is $2,299.

Nice....enjoying my r6 and dont see a need to 'Upgrade" at this time! Thanks Jarad!
I’m happy this wasn’t too earth shattering of an update since I just bought my r6 this summer
4:52 it’s funny you say that because most of the people posting on Canon rumors absolutely expect that lol it seems like every time a new cheap camera comes out they think that it’s going to have the most high and features on a low price camera.
Thank you for this video. I'm currently researching changing to mirrorless for sport , including motor sport.
Great review!! Does it remember faces? If my subject is dancing in a group of people, can it remember to keep only my subject in focus at all times? And how would I set this up? Thanks.
Thank you for the information
So excited for this camera! I think this will be a great upgrade for me as a horse photographer/videographer.
Nice video. I thought I it would also get a new mode but not sure if it was for photos and not video. Currently have the R6 and use it for birding. If it had a higher mp I would have upgraded. Might keep an eye out for sales in nov/dec on the R5 though.
He starts talking about video specs at 20:22
There are features I need from this to be moved to the R5 (dedicated video switch mode, focus breathing correction, 1080p180, anti flicker, new hot shoe). Interested to see what the low light performance is like.

Hm, it is a front side illuminated sensor, so it will probably not be outstanding.
Sticking with my R6 its still a beast of a camera. Awesome video jarred.
I have the R5 and R6 and use them for wedding video and photo work. The R6 as a photo camera is mostly almost perfect for wedding work. I've wanted a little more resolution on the sensor (like 4-6 more MP). The R6 mark II does that. As a video camera, the R6 has frustrated me to no end. It still overheats, even after firmware update 1.6. The 30 minute record limit is nonsense... especially after the R7 and R10 camera have no limit. No custom modes in video. The R6 mark II solves most of my gripes with the R6 mark I and I will be running to upgrade and sell my R6. Thanks for the in depth first look Jared.
I preordered it! I'm upgrading from a Rebel t8i so I'm pretty excited! Should ship out end of November.
I love they changed the on off switch. As the OG R6 popped off and we couldn’t get it back on. 😢 Love your videos. Super helpful! I always learn a ton.
Great review!
Finally the pre burst mode is there. I used it on my m6mkii all the time when shooting birds.
Great job with this video. Got the original R6 and love it. Meets all my needs so I will not be upgrading to the Mark II. BTW - loved your video at the Phillies game. Any chance you got to go back and shoot the no hitter? What a game!
Thanks for the news update! Personally I would not upgrade from R6 to R6II (if I would have a R6, haha), but there are some nice and useful changes anyway.
Oh gosh. Here we go!
Jared, Thank you for this video, great review! The NEW R6 is good but my R6( first release) works great! Great video!
That explains why you were in San Diego despite not needing to go for a Phillie's game ;)
Great job on auto focus even when the eyes where barely showing.
Great pReview. The feature set and capability of this camera is exactly what I've been waiting for Canon to come out with. But just 5 days before Canon's announcement, I finally gave up hope and reluctantly decided to abandon the Canon ecosystem, even though it meant abandoning my many excellent L lenses as well. I bought a Sony A7IV and a couple of Sony lenses. I now regret that decision, as I would not have to replace all my great Canon lenses if I had just waited a few more days before giving up on Canon. Oh well. C'est la vie.
Honnestly, really interested because of the new photo/video switch for hybrid shooting, that was a pain on the 1st r6
Love the updates. I’m going to sell mine and upgrade I believe.
Hi there! Greaaaaat video as always, imo one of the best about the R6 MII. I've just a question about the " tennis player": how much of the "warping" is rolling shutter, and how much is bending/deforming of the objects? I mean, tennis rackets bend...and (tennis) balls deform... :D
Because Jared is photo centric he saved the most obviously important upgrade until the end - witch is an improvement to the video overheating. Keeping in the same price was because of,the R6’s competition to,the Sony A74.
Here we go!!!
Loved the outtakes on the “6d Mk II”! 😁
The fact that this was a mid level update makes me think the R5 II could be coming soon....

@Rebel Hikes your moral superiority is a little evident. But considering you haven’t built a single camera we don’t really care what you think. Your inability to see any good in A rival brand tells us how brain washed you are. For in order to be a fair judge you have to weigh without bias. I have used Sony a7s iii, a7iv. Canons R6, R5, R3. They are all amazing cameras. And if you can’t create something great with both brands. You suck😘 I buy canon still because I prefer that brand. My friends buy both Canon and Sony because they prefer that brand. Canon is the only camera brand allowed to be critiqued so it will improve the most. You mention a down side to a sony and get stoned, “but CaNOn🤡”
@JesseStarrPhoto

@Rebel Hikes I don't think Canon needs much more bragging rights at any sports event since they are 90% of the cameras there... Also, as a pro, I've never bought a camera system based on third party lenses... It's nice to have third party options if they are really good but I typically just get the manufacturer's glass anyways. Since a big portion of Sony's marketshare is consumers, it makes sense they allowed third party cheaper glass.

Cant wait for the new lens video
This looks like a nice bump in features and will be a great camera at the same price point. I use an R6 working as a part-time photog, but I will be hanging on to the original body for now. The higher res and 40 fps are sexy, but not really worth upgrading for me personally. I will hold out to see where they go with the R5 specs, then maybe trade up.
This 6D Mark II sure does look great!
I'll be jumping from the Canon 77D, looking forward to high ISO performance at sport events, silent mode at quite indoor events, same size file as the 77D, and most importante looking forward to using proper AF system. I just hope that I get used to using the EVF at the studio, I have no idea how it behaves with flash.
As an EOS R owner I will be upgrading! I was waiting until deals for the EOS R6 appeared or i find a use one for a good price but I decided to go with the EOS R6II. I love the EOS 6 but I wanted a camera with IBIS and a faster fps.
I look forward to the day when auto-focus really works accurately and detects the right subject type so there is no need to manually select it. Raw burst mode is on the M6 Mkii but it’s pretty useless as continuous autofocus doesn’t work with it.
I just hope they add a firmware to get rid of record limits across all active canon cameras. I'll probably pick up the Mark II as my "A cam" due to the RAW video capabilities, and keep my regular r6 as a solid b cam.
Coming from the original EOS-r, looks like a good time to upgrade. Would love to see a video on your best method/best settings for using the autofocus as you were at the Canon event.
Very good review - helped me to confirm that R6 m ii is a good choice (ordered it yesterday). Will be the buddy of my R7 welded with a EF 100-400 ii (insane combo for a telephoto person). R6 will be the guy for (ultra-)wide with EF 16-35 4.0 and shallow depth of field with the great EF 100 2.0 and RF 35 1.8. Non-money-making hybrid shooter who wants to make a documentary about energy problems and solutions in the next years (after 30 years dreaming of a cinema camera system whithin (financial) reach). Thanks for your work, Michael
I love the R 6. That said...yes. I'm going to upgrade. Love your work. Thanks.
Thank you for a great review Jared :-)
Wish I could be there to. Looks very interesting to do.
Having owned an EOS R for a few years now, I'm very happy to be upgrading to the R6II after skipping the last generation. I WAS super keen on an R5 before long as my biggest gripe with the R6 was the 20mp sensor, I recall telling everyone that I'd have been all in for it if only it was at least 24mp, well now we have one that IS... plus all the other new features make it a gigantic upgrade over the original R

It will also have better dynamic range and overall image quality. According to Canon, the R6 mk2 can still produce sharper results than the R thanks to a less aggressive AA filter.

@@Gregori-mi2vy8nc6y a few years ago I would have said the same thing That said, I've had absolutely zero issues with either the EOS R or the R6II Despite DSLRs being around for longer, they very often included live view modes anyway now, which operate essentially the same as a mirrorless does now, they just got rid of the mirror in between. The new bodies work great, and the shorter flange distance of the R systems gives way more creative control to the manufacturer, without hurting exisiting lens options Happy to be a test subject when my camera performs as it does compared to the days of DSLR

@@Gregori-mi2vy8nc6y I own EF glass personally but for previous jobs I've had a collection of RF, they're brilliant Obviously expensive but so worth it if you're buying new glass anyway It shocked me how quickly AF works on the new gear, how dark the room can be for you to still find focus and how much detail you can pull out of shadows etc For reference my current gig is a nightclub photographer I'm using the R6II and a 16-35 f4L lens in a DARK nightclub Zero issues focussing on people any time needed, sometimes it needs to use the infrared focus beam light but otherwise it's always bang on whatever your focus point is The only consideration is in low light it struggles to detect a face, but when you set the point it will still track and focus it perfectly
Since a long time now I am looking to add a R6 to my existing 6DMkII but this maybe the trigger to move toward buying a new body! Thank you Jared, always a great time to watch your reviews! #igotthisfarthanksjared
The anti-flicker shooting (electronic shutter mode) is a huge deal for me. I shoot on film sets and the banding can be severe on most mirrorless cameras using the electronic shutter on some sets. Cheap led practical lights are specially problematic.
I'm waiting for the next r5. I expected this to be a 30mp sensor, that would have tickled me a bit more. its not a big enough upgrade from the r6, but if I were shopping and didn't have a decent camera this would be a great place to start.
I like my R6 R7 combo - the R7 for birding, the R6 for everything else. If I didn't have a camera, I'd pick the R6 Mark II, but I'll stay with what I have. But, I teach math for a living and take pictures just for fun.

I have the same combo currently. Its really nice! The new AF of the R7 is also a great update (the R6II has the same). But I think I will also stay. Because... its 1000€ more expensive as what I have payed for the Mk1...thats to much for those new features - which some of them I have in the R7. WITHOUT rolling shutter... I would instantly upgrade!

I swapped the Mark IV and bought the R5. The auto focus is not as good as he is making it out to be. Although it is better than the Mark IV it is not perfect and has its flaws. Especially working with the newspaper I tend to use spot focus a lot more than eye detect. It is fast than having to cycle through which persons eye you are focused on. He claims the autofocus rarely misses even with running or moving objects. I have tried the auto focus on every single setting and it misses a lot with my dog running no matter what.

@@evi2083 I had the 5D Mark IV (and shot with the best Canon DSLRs for 18 years). The R6 Mark II AF is light years better than any Canon DSLR including the 1D Mark III that I shot with as a pro for 12 years. I took the R6 Mark II out and shot hockey - arguably the most difficult sport to shoot - for a couple hours after getting my new cam. Out of the box, it NEVER missed! It acquired eye AF every time, thru plexi-glass, even when the players were wearing masks or cages. It was incredible! My 1D Mark III would have taken so much fiddling with the AF points, or I would have just used the center point all game, and it still would have missed 50% of shots. The 5D Mark IV would have been significantly worse. I think I had a 95% perfect hit rate with the R6 Mark II using the EF 70-200 2.8 III adapted. I also had the EOS R and it was better than the 5D Mark IV, but not nearly as fast or accurate as the R6 Mark II.
Would be cool too see the Bmx shot with the 70-200 f2.8 Hey Jared if arenacross ever comes to Philadelphia would be cool too see how the R series shoots dirtbikes indoors
As usual a wonderful video. Thanks for this. Actually I own the r6 mi and as I am not a pro, I won't change my camera. At the moment I prefer to invest money in quality and top level lens. These will last for many many years while I am sure that in a couple of years that will be new updates in camera features. As you correctly said these are mid level improvements, for photos also low level improvements (the most ones are in video) and more marketing issues. The r6 is the best seller camera, so introducing new features allow canon to sell lots of camera again. Not all can afford the price of a r5 or r3. But again, as you said, these are not key improvements. And also if somebody has to buy a new r6, I would suggest the mark i and invest money in lens
My R6 was purchased two weeks ago. It was returned and will be ordering the MKii.
in my opinion... the reason for the "mid-level" camera is to fix the overheating. As a wedding videographer my r6 overheats EVERY SINGLE WEDDING. Its my favorite to shoot on so I deal with it. Excited about the upgrade.

We shoot weddings on all things Canon. We currently have both an R6 and R5. With us mainly doing video, this camera is a no brainer for a B-cam or a replacement A cam in a pinch if we are doing a photo video wedding. 100% probably either gonna sell our current R6 or keep it as a tripod/backup camera (can never have too many reaction cams for video).
