Canon is aware that DPreview can not lean in favor of any camera brand because they need to advertise for revenue. I rather have reviews from real photographers.
Really good video and I respect the honesty! The main take away from the video is that majority of the "new features" could have been given to the R6 Mark 1 on a firmware update 👍🏼

The processing pipeline of the R6 II seems to be faster (reduced rolling shutter) & more efficient (less heating and significantly longer battery life from the same battery), so many improvements would have needed that. However, I agree that things like false colour could easily have been added via firmware updates. But then, this is Canon we're talking about... the company that has perfected the art of giving the least (features/ capability) for the most (amount of money).
@SeanSeesMedia

Hmm, more resolution due to a sensor update, hardware changes such as buttons and layout, evf, I don't think the primary new features were possible via firmware.
@limitedhangoutlive

No they couldn't have. The better auto focus is because of the new sensor, etc. I strongly recommend watching other videos regarding this camera. It has been pretty universally praised and I'm not sure if they're aware of the tone here, but it is coming off as a bit overly critical especially when they're remarking Sony as having "stickier" AF when even the new A7RV has reportedly worse AF than even the original R5. The auto focus intelligence here is the new AF and is based on the R3's AF intelligence. For video, it has Detect Only AF, in which the camera will stop autofocusing if the subject its tracking leaves the frame. This avoids awkward or disruptive focus hunting during recording in situations where the camera would typically lose focus and then hunt around trying to reacquire focus. The R6 II also includes a new Movie Digital IS for enhanced image stabilization for handheld video, as well as built-in webcam support. I am not sure if they didn't test this mode or if it was because of the pre-production--but the detect only should not be hunting. Nevertheless, as Canon often does, I am sure there will be quite a few firmware releases that fix any hunting issues. Stuff like that can be done with a firmware update. Trying to get more than a sensor can handle is never going to work without, well, a new sensor. The sensor also outperforms its specs, can record externally at 6k RAW, is oversampled @ 6k, and supports internal recording of up to 4:2:2 10-bit. It can shoot 180 FPS in 1080p which is huge for the occasional super slow b-roll,

@@hsjawanda Meanwhile Sony won't even give basic features found in low end cameras to their very high end cameras like the A7SIII in firmware. The A7RV is just the A7RIV with firmware updates and new LCD. Sony is the stingiest camera company out there when it comes to firmware. The way Canon revolutionized the R5 with firmware updates (removing overheating, adding Clog3, adding new video codecs) I'd say Canon is one of the most generous when it comes to firmware updates.

@@zegzbrutal The problem is that the IBIS also tilts the sensor, rather than only moving it along the flat plane. I wish manufacturers would make an option to have IBIS in video only be 2-axis instead of 5-axis, that would solve this issue.
A lot of people speculated that we'd get to see the R mk.II this year, but with the launch of the R6 mk.II, I guess the R was frankly only the pilot model of the EOS R line up. I'm personally surprised to see the R6 mk.II this early, only a little over 2 years from the mk.I. It's quite an incremental but worthy update given no raises in the launch price. I'm sure some of the new features can be ported to the mk.I thru firmware update, it's just that Canon isn't known for being a generous company. All of that being said, I'm quite happy with the launch. This means the R6 mk.I will go down in price and I can (probably) afford a used one.

@@hoatd1993 There are plenty of people (photographers) who would buy R5 just for the 45mpixel. Some people also love the top screen on R5. It also allows you to have the LCD on while connected to external monitor. It also does All-I in video. I think the target audience is different enough for them to both exist. But that’s just my opinion.
Selfishly glad this isn’t earth shatteringly better than the r6 since I just bought mine this summer
So it's much better in stills (pre-burst, great rolling shutter), but on the video side the Canon Cripple Hammer is still active.
Please note if you are shooting ISO400+ there is no loss in using 12 bit RAW. You can do a comparison between 14 bit RAW and 12 bit RAW at say ISO 800 and the last two bits aren't encoding usable data, basically read noise. For sports and wildlife it's not often one can use lower ISOs to gain the benefit of 14 bit RAW.

Not hard to beat the A7IV. Sony has average lenses and so-so AF. Canon R6 Mark II destroys A7IV!
11:30 I think this is solved by lowering the Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity. It makes the AF more "sticky" and doesn't jump to other subjects if lowered. By default this is set too high in my opinion.
Can't wait for R5 MK2!!!
Good sports pictures
I am flabbergasted. The R is in dire need of an update. It's in the heart of the FF MILC market and is outgunned by the A7III/Z6II. R6/R3 and now R6II seem incredibly redundant. I had an EOS R for a while but when I saw where Canon was heading I got out.
That CLOG3 footage looks really good
this upgrade was due for long time as this model EOS R6 was not positioned well. I guess that with these small changes, EOS R 6II might become useful tool if offered at more competitive price.
Always cool to see more cameras, hopefully canon fans are pleased with it!
Very honest video, informative, to the point. I am still looking for a good back up sports camera but don't want to spend the dough on the R3. Not sure this is it yet.
I'm gonna have to wait for electronic shutter banding tests under LED light, but I'm not holding my breath since it isn't a stacked sensor. Looks like I'll be sticking with my R6 for now.
@youknowwho9247
Жыл бұрын
I thought so, too, but it's not necessary, nor is it the best way to avoid banding to have a stacked sensor. I debated getting an a9 II for the readout speed, but when I had an a7 IV loaner in, I realized that it has a feature to micro adjust shutter speed. With this you can completely eliminate any banding under any light by simply selecting the shutter speed at which it disappears. Case and point, I recently shot an event with the a7 IV and a9 (mark 1) and when I got the files into lightroom I saw banding in the a9 shots because of the terrible lighting, but not in the a7 IV files.
Great honest review. I have one question I’m hoping you could answer for the video side. Can you set custom video modes for video now? With the toggle on the left side does that mean that custom modes can be for both photo AND video. Previous model could only set custom dial for photo and I hated it. Same problem you guys had in that when switching video modes there was no way to get back to frequently used settings. I sold my R6 for this reason, even professionals forget to set perfect settings. Need those custom modes.
@definedphotography

yes, custom video modes have been mentioned in other videos.
Wobbling? Tracking AF? 10 bit only in clog ? IPB codecs ONLY? RF lenses only? Micro Hdmi? Canon, where you think you going?
Great review!! Does it remember faces? If my subject is dancing in a group of people, can it remember to keep only my subject in focus at all times? And how would I set this up? Thanks.
Hello, I saw the video on the Canon R6mk ii and as usual very professional and comprehensive. Thank you very much. One thing that wasn't mentioned and I wanted to know is the Hotshoe issue fixed? In the first model it was a very big deal, it's all about the network that there was a flaw in Canon's design and everyone encountered the fact that the flash just started to fall off the camera because everything falls apart there. Had to send a new camera for repair, and it is necessary to disassemble half of the camera to fix it (unlike previous models). That's why I didn't buy this camera in the end. I asked you, was this issue fixed in the R6 mkii model? Thank you very much for your answer, Gilad.
I'm in mental anguish! You guys and your SAN DIEGO trip! You should be testing such equipment here on the western Canadian snow filled prairies. C'mon guys... You are both hearty folk! Am I right? 😉
Chris, I know it’s a bit of an odd request, but could you try subject detection with horses when you test a camera? I’d love it :)
i kind of like that shutter sound while in electronic shutter mode. I wonder if that can be implemented in an update on the OG R6.
Thanks for this review. How does it compare to the R3? Is the stickiness of the focus similar?
@gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife
Жыл бұрын
I would like to know as well. I like the R6 a lot for wildlife birds. But sometimes I get some freezing issues. Even with the latest firmware. Like a delay sometimes. I’m thinking of getting an R3 and reserving my R6 for landscapes and portraits only. But the R6 is still really good compared to the older DSLR bodies.
How does the the new R6 handle super low light scenarios? Will it detect the eye or even face near pitch black lighting conditions (ie: night time wedding reception/ club) without using the camera's internal assist beam? Does the Mk II pairs well with current flash units, executing proper flash unit's assist beams? I've been told current flash units generally don't sit too well with current mirrorless cameras [even when exposure simulation is turned off]. Please advise?
Any chance the 1080p modes are oversampled too?
Just pre-ordered it with the 24-105mm f4.
I didn’t expect a Canon R6 Mark II that soon… I’ve just uploaded a video on how I’ve (almost) got rid of the overheating issue on the R6 😅
Does the R6 Mk 2 allow saving customized video (C1,2,3,) or at least to allow setting a default such as 4K 24 vs. the 1080 resolution it defaults back to after shooting stills. Perhaps there is a way to do this but I never found it on the R6.
Yes !!
Two words Bloody Expensive!!
Damn!! San Diego!? I could’ve met you guys!!!! AGGHHHH!
Have you heard when Canon will be coming out with a new R5 ll that does not overheat?
Wouldn't it have been nice to have a combined off/photo/video switch on the left side and maybe put a dedicated exposure comp dial where the power switch is on the right?
Canon needs to modify its IBIS implementation to reduce sensor tilt with wide lenses. It is sensor tilt that primarily causes the wobbling. With ultra wide lenses it may be preferable to drop down to 3 axis stabilisation - still very effective, and it would dramatically reduce wobble at the corner of images. As a minimum this could be made optional when a wide/ultra wide lens is attached.
@TherconJair
Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure most of the wobbling in the video is from IBIS, it appears to be more that wide angel lens used for video (15-35?) isn't parfocal and whenever Jordan moved the focal length changed?
@geoffreybassett6741

@Thercon Jair and almost every instance of the issue, the FOV on the opposite side changes in proportion the other way. It is definitely a sensor tilt issue with IBIS.

Supposedly there is a new Movie Digital IS for enhanced image stabilization for handheld video. I am interested to try this out. Looking forward to receiving my preorder. If you're talking about stills, there was some improvements there as well. Might just have to test it out.
I just read that Canon has added some "artificial sharpness optimizer" to the R6 mark ii to counteract the effects of the low pass filter, which is a shame in my opinion. The Canon R6 and R5 have this stunning cinematic quality in their photo's, I find that this quality and feel is missing in the R6 Mark ii images. I too thought that the clinically sharp, almost lifeless, empty and artificial look was caused by removing the low pass filter. But it seems it is caused by some artificial sharpening system. It is especially noticeable and disturbing while shooting people/portraits. I will definitely keep my original R6, as I feel it has the perfect look and balance while the R6 mark ii does not give me the look I want and feels a bit like a failed experiment with the (overly) artificial sharpness.
4:50 Canon needs to give out what now? 🤣 Nice video.
