Most of these were in junkyards or recycled by '97. Good luck finding parts if you found one in 2015 :p

This car had an amazing performance, but for some reason, Renault has never been an option for US people as a foreing car. The remote controlled power locks were an innovation in those years.

That's one thing I never understood. In Europe, these cars were one of the best ones money could buy for the market at that time. Then they tried the U.S. market with presumably the same engines, same machinery, same transmissions, same Renault training for said engines, transmissions and machinery, and presumably built the same way as their French counterparts and they failed. Why was that? I know it wasn't a horsepower or performance thing since Toyota, Honda and Nissan were selling Corollas, Civics, Tercels, Sentras, Stanzas respectively for years in the U.S. market with comparable performance as the Renaults. Price was more or less comparable. So, what gives? They had a formula, they had a product that worked on one side of the world, stands to reason the same formula and product should work anywhere.

@@chrismc410 It's simple..Intrinsic quality or lack of . Renault's auto transmissions were a liability for one in Europe, never mind the U.S.. As for the interiors, the plastics were adequate but engine sensors and electronics were at times wanting. This is where the Japanese products ran away from the opposition.

What does the gauge above the "w" at 0:55 show? It literally has no markings on it!

I believe it's a holdover from the European Renault 11, of which the Encore is based off of. I think it's the oil pressure gauge.

Actuality is the oil level indicator. I had a 1991 Renault Clio with very similar gauges.

I lived in Southfield Michigan where the AMC Renault headquarters were based. I remember when these vehicles were produced and I remember how poorly made they were. The Renault lineup remains the worst cars that ver attempted to transport anyone unfortunate enough to have bought one. I remember how soon after the AMC Renault merger that they went out of business. This is a great reminder of why the French are not leader in manufacturing

this car had sucess in europe, renault has left the usa because they had problem of money in europe and the unions had choosen to save the plants in europe and to leave the us market just when they begann to have sucess. it 's not a problem of quality. They prepared the next generation (R19 ) which was very reliable and sold very well in europe and germany for example. You have missed the R19 , a good car .

No the Renault Encore still didn't make the 10 worst cars ever made car no 1 1987 Yugo GV No 2 1975-1980 AMC Pacer No 3 1957-1959 Edsel No 4 Ford Pinto 1971-1980 this car almost bankrupted Ford Moter Company in lawsuits due to the rear end collision the gas tank would rupture and kill the occupants. Remember all makes and models from the 70's and 80's generally had poor quality. My neighbor brought an 1986 Encore Electronic He drove ii from 1986-2006 did all the required maintaince like changing the oil every 3000 miles and on these Renaults they suggested to change the timing belts or chains every 25-30, 000 miles to extend engine life. He did just that and the Renault lasted to 378,000 miles he sold it for 300.00 and it is still running but rusty with Renault you have to do all the factory scheduled maintaince when they tell you to do so if you don't it will break. Renault also suggested to change out air filters very other oil change, change coolant and thermostat every 2 years cost 7.00 thermostat and 14.00 coolant. He never has any major repairs against the car. He did all the required Renault maintaince and the thing lasted 20 years. The problem back then id people didn't take care of shit back then they thought these were a throw away car when it breaks junk it if you did the maintaince the cars would still be running. Another wise tip don't use cheap gas in any car if you want long engine life.

My parents owned one when I was a kid. I remember it only lasted 4 months before the timing belt broke and destroyed the engine. It only had 17,000 miles on it when they bought it. What a joke!

+dank1280 Must have been a 1.7L...the base 1.4 didn't have a timing belt. Timing belts in the 80's were notorious for failure...My brother had a Ford Escort that did the same thing.
