Office Vlog 0x06 - CRT and Computer Storage Ready

Ғылым және технология

At this point the projects are starting to snowball into moving more and more stuff as I clear out my storage unit. I needed to get some really big stuff out and moved my big shelves that hold a lot of the important things in my collection.
There are some audio issues towards the end of this video. I do not know why, they do not show up in the editor and I've tried re-rendering multiple times. So I don't know what the cause is. They aren't too bad so I'm just going to go with it since these videos are somewhat ephemeral in nature.
Here are some ways to help me make more videos!

    I know you said you sell out of your collection, but do you ever get consulting gigs ever? I mean your background I'm surprised you haven't offer stuff like that on the side for like other guys who might have questions towards their own work projects. 🤔 I've met plenty of folks who could've used that just to make some headway with things like pcb design or on resto jobs.

    Even around 17:00, the audio gets out of synch with the video. I've seen this on several of your videos and can't figure out if you're having an editing/rendering problem, or are rerecording audio in "post" for certain sections.

    For keyboards it would be nice if you could get a set of dividers. Place the dividers vertically in a shelf and then slide each keyboard between them slightly leaning on their backs. That way they aren't pressing on each other and the keys won't be rubbing. Kind of like |\|\|\|\|. Then whenever you need a keyboard you just slide it out.

    Be careful with how you store the keyboards with their cords. The different types of plastic used in the keyboard housing and the cables can react over time, so that if the cables and touching the keyboard they can actually like burn into the plastic. I've had a few nice keyboards semi-ruined with bad gouges in them that way after just a few years of storage. A very simple solution I use is just to coil up the cords into a sandwich bag all the way up to their origin from the keyboard, and then wrap a rubber band around everything a few times to keep it from unraveling

  • @firewolf34

    @firewolf34

    Yes - this is a great point! The technical reason behind this is that they add softeners to certain plastics (usually to make a cable more flexible), which off-gas over time and will soften nearby plastics as well

    @43:00 - That ATT has a bad PSU, but everything else should work fine, the battery did not leak before I removed it. And yes, you got it from me a while back. Pro Tip: Over the next several months do yourself a favor and start switching out those shelves for plywood. Those chipboard shelves will not hold all that weight for the long term, they will eventually sag and eventually give way and eventually fail. Probably take longer where you are due to the lack of humidity, but will happen.

I asked after the next video I have edited that will be released next. That's good to know about the chipboard. It is extremely low humidity here so it may take a while. But I'll keep an eye out and get to that when I can. I'm not a big fan of the chipboard anyway so I don't mind replacing it.

    Loving the progress. You know what I'd really love to see is Linus come over and do a big makeover thing with a new server setup, a studio recording space or something like that. Some sponsored thing where they get a pallet of thousands of dollars worth of hardware for nothing as long as they show it off and talk about it. I'm always happy to see that when other KZreadrs benefit so much from it and it would make a great video because there is just so much space to realise something big and the communities cross over so heavily.

    I'm pretty sure you could find one of those stackable letter trays for filing paperwork which would be suitable for holding your keyboards. You'd have portions of the keyboards extend beyond the trays themselves, but they should be deep enough to accommodate the better part of each keyboard such that the keyboards don't topple out of the tray, plus wide enough to store any trailing fixed cables as well.

    Have you seen line printers? Never got one for work but if we had stayed on home brew systems we would have needed one. When I started in IT tech support in the late 90's the company I worked for had NCR mini computer feeding WYSE terminals running a COBAL base system. They had 4 GENICOM wide format printers for printing reposts (on green bar paper), packing slips, production labels and invoices. As the old GENICOM's wore out I replaced them with Printek printers. Not much plastic on those. For a little bit we were also using an old Epson DFX printer like the 9000. I like me some production printers that's for sure.

    the punchdown tool often has one end of the tip that has a chisel tip to cut off the excess, then one side that allows you to punch down but not cut the wire if you are going to daisy chain the wire to a second connection. flashback of nightmares of doing a ton of cat5 cabeling back in the day when I saw that fall out of the amazon bag hehe.

    I had a space about 10x10 at my old place, and to maximize my storage I arranged my shelves in a spiral. It was definitely labyrinthine, but it maximized my space. At my current place I have a U configuration, with shelves lining three walls, and a double wide layer of shelves extending outward from the 4th wall. the 4th wall has 2 doors, an entrance and a closet, so I can access both. Have you considered spacing the two heavy shelves apart, and getting a few short shelves cut, and screwing right angle brackets between the two shelves and hanging the narrow shelves between. could make a nice spot for storing narrower things. Just dropping some storage ideas.

    Oh jeez, speaking of moving heavy old computers, my arms are going be dead tomorrow! I managed to score a first-gen mac pro from work, not as heavy as your Data General drives, but I had to carry it to my mate's car who was giving me a lift home from work. It was a good 10 minute walk, so pretty rough on my weedy nerd arms. I knew I should've just caught a taxi home instead of getting a lift! Shaky cam isn't as bad this time. Not sure what's different, but it is appreciated. At least knowing your 21" Dell Trinitron has bad plastic makes me feel better about my parents selling their old house with my 21" Dell Trinitron left in the loft of the garage. Aaand now I'm sad again remembering I threw out my HP 4c scanner years ago. With the Star printer, you can't move the tractor feed to a configuration where it pushes the paper? We've got an old Epson at work that allows you to unclip the tractor feed and clip it into a recess in the back of the printer to push the paper. Anyway, good to get a glimpse of the Data General again. I'm really curious to see what you do with it. It would be really awesome if you could set up a second "set" space with the Data General in the background. Maybe in contrast to the other set being mostly games on the shelves, you could somehow make the Data General set more businessy?

  • @TechTangents

    @TechTangents

    2 жыл бұрын

    The plastic is SO BAD on that monitor, it's one of the worst I own. And the other Dell I put next to it is nearly as bad as well. It's kind of shocking how brittle it is now. Ah, that's too bad. I don't think they are desirable to anyone else but me. The only one I've seen on ebay recently is in the box but they think they struck gold and want like $400 for it. But they don't seem to be common. That is very interesting about the push configuration, I will have to look into that because I would definitely prefer that! I didn't know that was a thing at all, here's hoping mine does it. My main concern with the Data Generals is having them setup in a way that makes them accessible and serviceable. So they probably won't be in a "pretty" space but instead in a useful space so I can get to them. I'm still working out the floor plan overall though. I actually want a dedicated area with a desk for them, but until they can do something at least I would rather keep the space free for other things.

    For storing keyboards I built something. It's conformed to the depth of the shelf ,and it's open on the front and back with spacers so that the keyboards don't rest against each other. I kind of looks like a comb. I made the spacing just slightly wider that the keyboards so I could put them at a slight angle. It works well, and it allows me to store my keyboards fairly well. I'm sure with quite a bit of work with an engineer I could design something better, but it worked for me in a pinch.

    Your storage room is looking good! When you use the punch tool, make sure that when you terminate the keystones that the longer pointy bit (blade) is pointed out as its supposed to cut the excess wire off. Lots of keystones and patch panels also have the colour coding right on them for both 568A and 568B standards. I'll have to look as well I have little cutters that are great for stripping the jacket off of cat 5/6 as well. May have to send you a set of those! I did send some shelf brackets from your wish list as well already.

    @@TechTangents haha yeah it would be rather counter productive 🤣 The brackets showed as having been delivered a while ago so I'm hoping that you've gotten them and they didn't disappear. When terminating you just have to use the same standard at each end, and using A on one and B on the other will create a crossover cable which can be useful if you need to link old routers/switches that won't do it automatically. I'm looking forward to seeing your next vlog, they're definitely among my favorites!

    @@TechTangents ah ok good im glad you've gotten them! Basically any manufactured patch cable I've seen is wired with the B standard. I was taught that we use the A standard up here in the great white north (eh? 😝) and the US used the B standard but not sure how accurate that is. I've heard the B standard may be better for dealing with interference but practically I've never noticed a difference. With the right crimp tool it's easy to make your own patch cables too!

    I'd use the wall hampered by the door to set up something I've been thinking about for (eventually) my own keyboards. Either get thin, free floating shelves to set up in the walls (I actually have one with a very small barrier towards the edge which would fit nicely) or get small, squared wall hooks to hang them there. The disadvantage is that it would probably be something of a custom fit for each keyboard, whereas the free floating shelf would be free for all. Anyway, the keyboards would be safe from being crushed, easy to reach and also on display at the same time. I think you might be able to get those very cheaply in the US, since they are not absurdly expensive here in Brazil.

    (48:12) This reminds me of: 1. According to one of his past Instagram posts, Rene Pfitzner, one of my favourite comic authors/artists, uses a Cintiq 21UX. For a while, he tried to use a Cintiq 24HD, but switched back, however, the 24HD was used by one of my favourite graphic artists, Joey Ellis, when he wrote and illustrated 'Wolfie Monster and the Big Bad Pizza Battle' (the tablet is shown on one of the back matter pages, and I saw it in photos on his Twitter), and I believe he currently uses a newer Cintiq. I'm sure there's another artist I like who also uses an older Cintiq. 2. As you may have guessed, inspired by Jens K Styve having posted videos on Twitter of him(?) trying different fountain pens that were of the same models used by famous comic artists (IIRC), I dreamt of challenging myself to use the same models of pen tablets that other artists (whose art styles I love) use.

    I was thinking about that but I feel like it would be too distracting. I've kind of got it worked out now where I point the mic down instead of up and I've trimmed my beard a bit more. Those two together have pretty much solved the problem now.

    You can display number “6” with one hand. In China they made up symbols for “6” to “10”, to symbolize them by hand, which they actually use. From 0 to 10, all one-handed

    This is what it is: amzn.to/3HogImy They used to make a 4 bay dock that went into the 5.25" bays which I also have, but I think it's discontinued. The smaller 3.5" one is actually better designed though so if you don't need the slots it's just better all around. I've been using the 4 bay one for over a year and it's worked great. (This isn't sponsored, I just really like it!)

    Perhaps I missed it, but what model/dimensions are those shelves you placed the CRTs n such on? I've been looking for something decent (but preferably not overly expensive) for the same sort of purpose, but having an idea of what you're working with there would be pretty helpful.

    Out of curiosity: Have you any bad experiences with failing SATA connectors on these camera SSDs? Because those internal connectors aren't actually designed for repeated plug-in cycles, and I would have expected them to fail rather quickly. The WD Hard Drive Interface Guide for example states: "[I]nternal SATA cables and connectors are designed for only 50 insertion and removal cycles." That is probably just a statistical minimum value, but I wouldn't expect them to actually last, like, an order of magnitude longer than that. So I'm wondering if you had any issues with that in practise. My instinct would have been to use USB, which can handle way more cycles (1,500+), but you're the guy with the practical experience.

    That is actually a very interesting question that I had looked into myself before I settled on this solution! The SSDs and the docks(the camera doesn't normally support SATA, I added a USB-C to SATA adapter for that) I'm using are all standard consumer grade hardware that will have the standard 50 cycle rating for the SATA connectors. I was concerned about that, but I've had far more problems with cables failing than connectors and USB-C has a lot more fragile little conductors in it now. So I was not too confident in using USB-C SSDs all the time. My workflow with the SATA drives is specifically set up so I never have to use a cable, I'm basically treating them like cartridges. I think this is likely to be more robust in the long run.
