Off Topic: Swissclassic Biwak 2019, 3 day 62km Alpine hike with camping

Спорт

A little off-topic video in which Bloke takes a little wander in the Swiss Alps on the Swissclassic Biwak 2019, from Oey-Diemtigen to Lenk Simmefälle over 3 days. 62 flat km, 110 Leistungskilometer once you take into account the considerable height gain. And yes, we got somewhat wet and rather muddy, as well as a bit lost in the cloud!
Swissclassic organise a couple of multiday supported hikes per year, and take care of camping spots with fires, food etc. Here's a link to this particular event: www.sclassic.ch/strecke_b.htm I shall definitely be doing another one of theirs at the next opportunity!
Always liking to double up, he's also testing some clothing from Varusteleka www.varusteleka.com/en and there's a full post mortem kit review here: • Off Topic: Varusteleka...

    I find always funny when I'm hicking in what I think is a remote, difficult to reach place, just to find a group of 1 tons cows sitting there like they've just left their barn for a quick walk :)

I'll also be filming some geeky over-analysis of my entire runs, possibly starting tonight if I get the time, if not it'll be at the weekend, then launching them progressively.

    Yeah if you've seen some of his earlier work things didn't always work out so well though. There is a vid he did talking about him and his wife's first adventure in the Ontario wilderness were they tried to ruff it for a year. (There's a doc too I think) Definitely some horror stories on that one. Major props for what he's done but yikes things did go south on him sometimes.

    35:42 … the bloke gets a small recharge… ;-) I would give additional thumbs up for the "offline", satellitefree" navigation! (to me it looks that this is getting a forgotten craft) And for not falling in those slippery conditions! (While i like such weather for hiking, i don't like the muddy parts for their danger of slipping especially downhill) I wanted to comment on your mention of taking your clothing with you into the sleeping bag and it's rating: i remember my conscript military mountain winter trainng: the sleeping bags we were issued were rated safe to use down to +5°C and we used them in what we called Schneeloch ("snow hole")... We were on the glacier (in winter) and dug a hole into a steep slope in which 12 soldiers could fit, then slept in there. Outside -30°C and wind, inside 0°C like in an iglu. We took all our food and clothes inside the sleeping bag (well those 10 of us who listened carefully to what our "nco" said...) for 2 reasons: First the damp clothing and food would otherwise freeze up in the „snowcave“, and second: the body heat dried the damp clothing and kept us kind of warmer. You can expect the space inside the sleeping bag not to be meant for such things, so i slept little and quite bad that night. But on the next morning all of us had warm clothes, and almost all of us had eatable breakfast. ;-)

    In 2013 I spent a week with the lads hiking up then under then back out and down Welsh mountains carrying a full DSLR rig and inappropriately heavy tripod wearing chest waders and hard hat. Worth every blister for the memories and the photos. I'm going to suggest this for the next trip, I'll enjoy not having to cook for six every evening. Whilst I came for the shooting, this stuff is really fun to watch, and it inspires me to get out more. In fact I might head up kinder scout with my bivi and 23 year old Trangia at the weekend. Thanks Mike 👍

    I really enjoyed this. I live in the State of Mississippi in the USA. The highest point is 807 ft (246m) above MSL and that's 300 miles from the beach. So it's pretty flat. High temps have been +35C Although the humidity has been lower than usual. Anyway, it is quite different from what you have experienced.

    My dear Herr Bloke, your closing comments about adding extra interest hit the mark with me. Being a shooter here in the USA, I've always been fascinated with the shooting culture in Switzerland, but until I found your channel I could only get tantalizing bits and pieces. Having watched this video I am now caught up. That is to say, I have watched ALL of your videos for this channel! Fascinating stuff, indeed. Further, this video is not entirely off topic: outdoor gear can be essential to the shooting sports, as I found out the hard way when I was younger and spent some years deer hunting both in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The first couple of years I froze my sorry ass before I got the clothing right. Perhaps you could do some videos about Swiss military camping/bivouac equipment. For a time you could get Swiss canteens and camping stoves, etc. from places like Sportsman's Guide. This was always listed as "used, in good shape" which probably means the previous owner beat the crap out of it. What does the Swiss army use today? Is it better than the old stuff? And where might I order some of it for myself ( if it is any good? )

    Bloke, another great video from you. Just one fan-correction though: "Kein Trinkwasser" means, "No drinking water", which doesn't necessarily mean that the water is having something nasty in it. It usually means that the owner of the tap don't bother to organise a rather expensive regulary laboratory testing of his water just that hikers and other tourists can drink the water he organised for his cattle. Great jacket btw!

    I don't really understand why, but, even though I grew up in a small city, I've always liked cows. They have a calming effect on me. Also, I grew up as "dog people" but I finally learned how to talk to cats. ( Cats work on a somewhat different wavelength. ) Now that I've gotten to this point it seems I can communicate with all kinds of animals. And what is worse....... I can't stop! I can't turn it off!! Cows are social animals; if that cow came up to you and started licking you it was being friendly and curious about you. I hope you spent some time petting it and talking to it.

    I'm a fan of all the bits of Swiss surplus in your kit, guess it's rather a case of convenience. Though if you get the chance, try swap the the aluminium water bottle cup for a steel one, they are much more pleasant to drink from I've found

  • @BlokeontheRange

    @BlokeontheRange

    Aah, I didn't know there were steel ones! Thanks! Although I'm not a fan of metal mugs in general, it's such a massive spacesaver to have one around a slim bottle like that, hence why I used it. Brit 58 pattern bottles with their plastic mugs are too fat for the waterbottle pouches on that rucksack, unfortunately.

    In the clag could have been Scotland but the giveaway was no feverish face scratching and then running over a cliff to escape the midges. This wool versus synthetic debate has come full circle in my time in the outdoors. Merino base layers have been the game changer because the synthetics were never optimal. However, there's also the fashion / philosophy / hipster influence on the outer layers so it's very useful to get an honest review of how the wool jacket performed in cold, wet conditions. Apart from that, would be interested to hear how wearing military camouflage gear is received in Switzerland - is it socially acceptable or do people think you're a survivalist nutter? As you know no-one in the UK bats an eyelid if you are sporting camouflage trousers OR jacket outdoors but wearing both tends to indicate you have issues.
