Can solar technology fuel modern life? In this video series, American Experience travels to three different climate zones across the United States to find out how -- and why -- people are living off the grid.
In this episode of OFF THE GRID, we meet Cierra and Kyle who, in their one-bedroom Minnesota cabin, are making use of all of nature's elements to live their best lives off-grid.

20+ years off grid and the first thing you need to consider is how to get water. Without a secure source of water you won't survive long and you can't garden or raise animals without it. That can be from a deep well, rain water harvesting or having it hauled in. You also need to size your solar power system for your needs. Too small and you will run out and your appliances need to be efficient. Being off grid doesn't have to mean being isolated. I am 10 minutes from a small town with stores, hospital and services and I have internet and phone. Those are needed for communication and I run a business online which is my only source of income for things I don't produce myself. If you want to be self sufficient start with a garden and raising chickens. Those are the easiest and most cost effective and you can sell or barter your excess. Eggs over $4 a dozen and people are always looking for fresh garden produce. Wood stoves work but are not allowed all places and not everyone has access to a wood lot so many off gridders use propane for cooking, heating water and heating their cabins. Propane is a very clean fuel and burns 98% efficient and no one is drilling for propane. It is a biproduct that would have to be flared of if not used. My solar power system is just 1Kw and that runs water pump, lights, laptop, wifi, microwave, washer, fridge and recharges my ebikes, gadgets and tools. I rarely need to run a generator. I built my cabin in 2005 for under $2000 and have lived here very comfortably and no house payments, no utility bills and freedom!
