Off-road test! GWM Cannon Alpha 2024 review: New diesel dual-cab ute a worthy Ford Ranger rival?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2024 GWM Cannon Alpha is looking to quickly make its presence felt, with the all-new dual-cab pick-up launching with not only a traditional turbo-diesel engine, but also a petrol-electric 'self-charging' hybrid powertrain that's a nod to the future of one of Australia's most popular vehicle segments.
We've already sampled the Cannon Alpha Hybrid, so now's the time to zero in on the diesel-powered variants, which are powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit that produces 135kW of power and 480Nm of torque. In fact, this engine is actually more fuel efficient than its electrified counterpart, averaging 8.9L/100km versus 9.8L/100km on the ADR combined-cycle test.
But in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft puts the entry-level Cannon Alpha Lux and its turbo-diesel unit through its paces in an off-road test to find out if it's a true Ford Ranger rival.

I wouldn't pay more than 50k for a car like this. What advantage does it have , other than price. Its the only reason you would concider buying one

I believe the Mazda and Isuzu 3 litre turbo diesel models ( same engine ) get better fuel economy than that mentioned in this review for a 2.4 engine , possibly because the smaller engine has to work harder .

Give it 200kw/600nm and you'll secure a lot of buyers!

I’d be cautious and wait for a few more iterations before I’d buy one.

Advise which vehicle you think they've copied for this particular ute. Nothing, I mean nothing in the market place looks and presents the same as this ute. This is their own design, built from the tank 500 which is radically different to anything else, again not copied. First hybrid ute drive chain to market also, who the hell did they copy to achieve your copied claim. GWM are really becoming class leading by ingenious design, development, leaving Thia built utes in the past, how can that be copying.
