Thanks Wallace, self taught and learning firsthand. I know trial and error has been a part of my off grid life for the last 12 years, but through all of that I've gained a lot of experience. I know you guys love enjoying life at your cabin so perhaps one day you'll move there full-time. Take care!

I think why the low voltage shut off is so low is because of the amp draw on compressor start up. You are definitely right about not drawing the batteries down too far. They'll last longer if you always keep them topped up.

Dave that's a great setup. I run an ac fridge off my 400 watt panels and about 800 amp hours of battery. It runs at about 75 watts ac or about 8 amps dc . I can't run the fridge once the temps get to 50F or less as my battery capacity drops huge. Look forward to seeing how you make out over the winter . Did you put an amp clamp on your cable at the freezer and get a reading? I've tested a lot of specs and not once have they matched :) Your not using an inverter so that's about 24amps a day saved . I think 10.5 is way too low too. I never run my battery bank down under 12v . I never tested a dc fridge before , my DMM has a chart function where I can monitor the draw over a 24 hour period and look at the duty cycle and amperage draw. Good stuff Dave 👍

Through my knowledge, batteries will function better below 50°F, do you adjust your solar panels or does your controller tell you how many amps are coming in to your bank? I have the 10.3 cubic foot fridge and it's been working nonstop for near three years now, and the amount of total wattage based on a 24 hour period is very low, even during winter when the ambient temperature inside my cabin is very warm. I will test the amps on the freezer and fridge to give some feedback. Winter operation generally counters as the shorter daylight hours and clouds is not lost as the freezer is in the unheated shed. When I used to use an AC freezer it worked well, so this should be even better. With regards to the solar array angle where we are, whatever the summer solstice angle is you can add 30° for winter solstice, Fall would be +15, and spring would be the same. For example, June 21 here is 34°, Sept 23 is 49°, December 21 is 64°, and March 20 is 49°. Thanks for your input and I'll let you how it goes. 👍

@@DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors My panels are fixed at 40 degrees. My inverter shows charging amps or volts . When I'm at my camp at -15 C my batteries are about 1/2 the capacity as in the summer. Solar is great but it's a challenge figuring it all out I'm still learning :)

@@SteveRobReviews that's unusual for your battery bank to be showing that. When you're checking the voltage are you checking with zero input from the panels? Also, zero load on the system? What type of batteries are you using? Here at my place the batteries during peak sunlight are maxed out at 29.5 volts, as the solar input reduces, the voltage status significantly drops, with zero solar input my bank shows 26.1 volts. I always tell people to compare your batteries to a beer that's poured into a glass... The froth on the top is similar to the 26.1-29.5 voltage with the batteries. It doesn't have the density, and therefore doesn't last. If you're on a 12 volt system you'll find your batteries will hold on 12.5 volts for very long... There's a "sweet spot" we'll say, where the density is greatest. 12.2 is the lowest you should let them discharge with zero load is considered about 50% state of batteries. You'll get more and more familiar with your solar system, I am always learning more myself. Hope this helps. 👍

@@DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors Dave I'm using 4 6v kirkland brand batteries . Yes I check them without a load but with the fridge cycling on every 15 minutes it never gets to stabilize even at night without solar input . The readings I go by is under load as it pops up when the load is removed . My last set of 4 trogan t-605 lasted 10 years so my new Costco batteries have the same specs. I am going to look further into DC , looked at your big fridge and the specs are great.

Good info, thank you. To be clear. You say you use 200 watts of solar power to charge batteries and run your freezer. Is 200 watts enough solar power to keep up during the summer time ambiant heat? I'm trying to figure out all that I'd need to install a 7 CF solar power freezer. Thank you for any info you can provide me

Hi there, I recently switched the array to utilize 600 watts for the freezer, no issues whatsoever. As you can see in the video, the freezer is stored inside of a poly storage shed and the ambient temperature is often very high during the summer months. It has been working flawlessly with the 600 watt array and a bank of 600 amp hours.

@@DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors perfect, from what I've kinda learned, 200 watts seemed very low. Think I'll go with around a 1000 watts just to be sure. By the way, how many CF is your freezer?

It's 9.3 cubic feet. It uses about 630 watt hours/24 hours with an ambient temperature of 77° F. with the freezer set to 3.2° F.

For AC, just buy an automatic battery charger that cranks out sufficient amps to charge the batteries and offset the freezer amp draw.

It's still much cheaper than LPG or natural gas, the fuel to operate is free for anyone who already incorporated solar panels. I used to use regular AC fridges and freezers, but the power consumption was too much. The inverter charger combo is definitely the way to go. 👍
