Off Grid Log Cabin Surviving Historic Winter Storm -31F Freezing Temps ALONE | STRANDED in Snow
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I was Stranded in snow miles from my remote cabin had hike through the wilderness in -31F to the cabin. Surviving winter storm Elliott on week of Christmas. My family will arrive the next day on Christmas Eve 12/24/2022 if the roads are passable by then. I need to get the log cabin ready for them. I was working out of town for a couple of days and tried to make it home on the coldest day ever. It’s was -31 with the wind chill. The roads were so dangerous and when I got to my country road it was not driveable. It does not get plowed until the last minute and then sometimes not at all. I hiked through the back country wilderness and as I approached my homestead I was able to travel on an old logging road where there is a flowing spring. I collect some water because I knew all of our water supply would be froze solid at the cabin. Christmas winter storm 2022! Hope you all are safe and have a wonderful Christmas!
More work on the homestead and log cabin will be coming soon, finishing the chinking with mortar, interior doors, building a greenhouse, harvesting fish from our pond, building a dog trot connecting both cabins, rainwater catchment for the house, solar, and more...stay tuned. Happy Holidays, stay safe! Thanks for watching dont forget to subscribe so you won't miss any future episodes: To subscribe and watch other videos of mine click here bit.ly/3EsYfWs
Little about me
After spending most of my life in the big city, living a congested life within society's grip I decided to leave all that behind and become more self reliant living a simpler more fulfilling life close to nature. My wife and I have 6 children, we homeschool, raise a garden, mini farm and try to be resourceful as we can providing everything the family needs from nature.

Makes me think of times I've said, 'awww, the hell with it I'm getting a cabin in the boonies and leaving the madness.' You and your family are doing it, good on you and yours, Have a great year!!!

The cabin is huge, glad to see you spending Christmas with your family, you can tell how cold it is just from you throwing the wood, you can hear the crispness with each crack, all the best to you and family, living the dream.

What a cool log house.
Good work sir!
I would get lost. At my age I couldn't make it. But it's beautiful ❤️.
Every fire in the wood stove brings instant contentment. Echos of axe splitting the next stove load are memory making music. Simple, soothing solitude.

Beautiful place! You know what was a lifesaver for us relying on splitting wood for heat was using an old truck tire to hold the wood and a speed-ax. It's significantly less bending during each session for us folk with injured backs. Tap tap tap tap...done. Also there's less worry of overstrikes, you just have to watch for hitting the rubber as it'll dull your edge. The handle is no worry though.

Pretty good size cabin for that one wood stove. You should try one or two of those stove fans on top of it to move some heat around!

Good❤😊😊
Initial hike was four miles? Your wife is a beast.
You need an ECO fan. They are great, the heat makes the fan turn.
Another great video, thank you so kindly for sharing. That skillet is really well seasoned, after watching this I had to go to the kitchen and rustle up some hash browns and eggs.

Thank you it’s hard to beat hash browns and eggs in cast iron!
A nice pipe, and it's perfect😁
❤
You need a dog friend. I upgrade to soapstone firebricks man what a difference to how long they hold heat especially overnight
I like the minus temperatures
You wouldn't like it here then in northeastern Ontario Canada then, where those temperatures are normal here with lots of deep snow to go with it.
🙂
All you need is a dog, like the video 👍😊
What a great cabin! What state are you in?
Sweet set up! I do have a question. Why is your chopping block set so far away from the wood pile?
@DebieKaspari-mp8fc
Жыл бұрын
In our case, it keeps the huge mess of chips away from the house and the extra walking is a nice break from swinging. If it was further, I'd use a truck or tractor bucket.
DAVE Can you address with detail how you get permission to build VRS the CITY and the rules of the land (dos and don'ts) that most need to know before they embark on this venture.? what did you do about WATER? I know people need permission to go off grid or they can be in trouble with building codes etc..
That wood stove looks like it pounds out the heat!

It really does!
It's one thing to have a cabin off -grid, but it's another thing not being able to drive to it. Got a cabin, you gotta have a dog to share it with you
Excellent video, thank you!! Question: Why do you light the stove fire from the top!? Instant flame? Slower fuel burn? Interested to know, thanks!
@tribeofdavid8
7 ай бұрын
Thank you 🙏 it’s called a top down fire which burns quick and hot then provides coals to load it full of large logs to burn long
Is that chimney enough to keep warm the whole house?? Even in extreme weather condition like you're experiencing?? Thanks

Why park so far away when the tire marks show there is a drive and I'm sure the wife and kids did walk 4 miles.
@tribeofdavid8

Those are old tire depressions on old logging road that I use to get logs from my cabin. That logging road has no access from the main road. Our main road wasn’t plowed. I was stranded 4 miles from cabin on main road and decided to hike through the woods to the cabin and as I got close walked the log road. Thanks to the sun things thawed some and road was plowed next day my family was able to drive in. Thx for watching! Happy holidays

HA! I knew it: you don't live there all year; it's just a weekend cabin. I notice you didn't show the temp inside... I bet it never went over 50 degrees Fahrenheit. A wood stove like that, no WAY can it heat a space that large when it's 31 below outside. It's probably warmer in the loft. So what WAS the temperature inside, or don't you have a thermometer?
