OFF GRID HOMESTEADING. One Season To The Next. A Backwoods Living Vlog. Episode 77

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Garden is winding down now and we're preparing for our 4th winter, Living off the grid in a mountain cabin. Our garden has been a huge success. We've canned and frozen lots of vegetables and now it's time to fill the freezer with fresh venison and we'll can some of that too.
Homesteading off the grid certainly has its challenges but there's no place we'd rather live. We restored the old camp and transformed it into a cozy home for ourselves, then we cleared more land, built a workshop and greenhouse and spent the late part of the winter starting seeds and now we're busy planting our first garden on the mountain. Little by little we're reaching our goals of having a self sufficient homestead.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:
Video of Gas Refrigerator:
Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

"If America could be, once again, a nation of self-reliant farmers, craftsmen, hunters, ranchers, and artists, then the rich would have little power to dominate others. Hi, Mister! My Fiance and I have been fans of your channel for many years .... The reason why we both love your channel so much is because we ALSO own swampy-land-property. 32 acres of pristine land ...... and a lake in the back. We've owned this land for 6 years now and honestly; we haven't done much except enjoy our "camping land" and freedom from town-life. The thing is: when we visit the land to talk about where we want to build; we both feel overwhelmed. We have SO many choices ... and we both don't know carpentry or anything. I grew up at a lake and I love 'Glamping' but I've never had a chance to learn any skills for building/fixing/etc. (See, I grew up in the 70s, and because I'm a "girl", I was never allowed to have "men" tools or anything. I used to love building forts/shelters but because I had absolutely no tools, I learned how to create things with what nature gave me.) ..... and my Fiance is PURE CITY boy .. .. He knows NOTHIN' ... hahhah ..... But we both have a passion for the outdoors and nature and that's why we bought the property. It's a dream come true!! ..... ...... May I ask for some advice?? ..... If you owned 32 acres (maybe a good 10 is solid though .... it is pretty swampy).... and had MANY good choices to choose from as to where to build a house .... a garage .... a garden ..... etc .. ..... how would you choose?? ... In a way, I feel sad that all these years, we've never really done anything with the land .. .... .... We finally decided to try a free project and build a "campershack" out of pallets but we are BEGINNERS at everything ... hahhah ... Probably doing everything wrong ... :D But it's fun learning .... Thanks for the read and any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Hope you are well!! ☺️☀🍂🍁🌻

I also watch Shawn James/My Self Reliance - both of you have first year gardens that produced beyond your expectations. Both gardens started this spring from raw earth and hard work, and the benefits are being reaped. Similar work ethics and drive. Thanks for life lessons - stay safe. Laurie is a peach!

Also, it's a great feeling when the wood is put up just knowing you've provided a nice warm home for you and your family. I'm up to five and a half cords right now. I'm thinking of cutting one more cord before winter. The place is looking great Boss. You've worked really hard and deserve the rewards it will bring!!

As always Boss a great video and Frankie claiming his pumpkin. Worked on a farm when I was a puppy, one of the property owners would cut firewood(by hand) 2 to 3 hours every morning, found out he was almost 90. Saw and an axe everyday kept him going strong, never will forget that. Your stack of firewood reminded me of that.

You have both come a long way in a year, succeeded where others would have given up. Your parents would be very proud how you have developed what was a holiday home into a beautiful living home. I admire you both for your grittiness. Good luck Dear Sir and Mamma. Plus the two little rebels.

Was happy when I saw you’d posted. It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year and you’ve accomplished all that. You are two amazing people. I look at the view of your greenhouse and garden and it makes me feel so peaceful. It’s just a picture and it makes me feel that, so I can only imagine the joy and peace it brings to you two, especially knowing it’s the fruits of your labor. Sorry about the tooth. Know how frustrating it can be to have something go wrong and not have a dentist. Been there, done that. You’ll find your deer when the time is right. As you said with all the work you’d have been upset seeing one and not being able to hunt. Blessings to both of you.

Great accomplishment, whats not to love. Hope you stay healthy and happy in your own little wonderland together. Attitude makes all the difference in life, if it's not strait forward then find a way around it. My wife and I have been doing that for fifty years. Good luck on your Hunt.

I always appreciate and look SO forward to your videos. I think after tonight, the growing season here in SW Maine will be over. What we had left in the garden has been harvested....and OH the Zucchini! Hahaha. I'm going to make some Zucchini Bread with some of it. We sure are going to miss our 10 foot tall Sunflowers and took pictures of them just before dark tonight. They probably won't look as nice come morning. Your place looks absolutely fantastic and your hard work has paid off! You two can sit back this winter with your coffee or wine, fire going in the wood stove, and look out the window and appreciate what you've done. Our game camera's have been mostly busy with deer, coyotes, fox (red, & gray), skunks, squirrels, birds, and a couple feral cats. Winters coming. I wonder if squirrel like zucchini? hahaha. Thank you for sharing!!!

Doing things that create intrinsic rewards is what is missing in the modern day world. People need this type of reward and working in the city only produces a pay cheque. I do a fair bit of welding and if I see something like a gate that I like, I stop and take the measurements, make a few notes, a drawing of the gate etc. so that I can replicate it for my own purpose. It costs me a little time big deal. I built a trailer too and what I like about the trailer is that I barely even know I am pulling it. The key to a home built trailer is to invest in very good springs. Most people cheap out on the springs, overload the trailer and thereafter with each bump you feel it as you drive. Good see you back to your old self. Continue on!
