Off Grid Homestead: Building A Custom Kitchen For The Cabin

Ойын-сауық

I built our kitchen counter and cabinets at the off grid homestead. The cabin is coming along nicely. We should be able to hook up our solar power soon and the rain water collection system is working awesome.

    Suggest you get a piece of cement board to mount the stones, then leave a few spaces to screw into the studs. You fill the spaces with stones after its mounted. In the future, if you wanted to change it just pop the stones out covering the anchor screws. The water in the barrels is not food grade, they have chemicals that will leach into the water. (BPF), and like most things made in China. For peace of mind get the food-grade containers. Boil all rainwater, birds will leave their droppings on the roof and bathe in the rain gutters. Don't ask me how I know this.Lol

    I hooked a garden hose near the bottom of my rain barrels, linking them together. Water drains into the "main" one and all the barrels fill evenly. If you have some hose and a way to connect them it'll save you having to manually siphon the one barrel.

    Hi Kyle. My comments are a couple years behind. I am so proud of you and Cierra for doing this. I'm old and retired and have always wanted to do that, but I never pulled the trigger due to societal fear. or FOMO. You have done an excellent job, even more so if you don't have much experience. Keep going and make sure you enjoy the ride. I pray for your safety and freedom. Thank you.

    Kyle, I've enjoyed watching your progress on this cabin. A couple of points for egonomics in your kitchen: 1. Kind of late now, but not having a recessed toe kick at the base of your cabinets will make working at the counter slightly awkward. 2. I suggest mounting your handles near the top of your base cabinets, and near the bottom of your wall cabinets.

    Here is an idea Kyle. Make some copper or brass bands to go around the seams in your beams to tie them together. Maybe even use iron depending on your contrasting décor and your availability to a black smith. If you need to, maybe add a few dummy bands here and there for synchronicity if it needs it for the optical perception of being uniform..... just an idea. Brother this is much easier DONE than SAID! I didn't even know I could articulate my idea like that..... hahaha

    I think it's wonderful! Looks like something I could live with. Doesn't have to be fancy shmancy for me. Handmade is more my style. Craftsmanship is hard to find nowadays! You've got it, my friend! I understand what you mean when you say "winter six months of the year". I'm also in northern Minnesota. They say we have 4 seasons. True, but spring, summer, and fall have to fight for the other six months! LOL! You're so driven to follow your dreams. You're such an inspiration! Don't EVER let anyone mess with that! I'm with you on that! Dream big and do whatever it takes to achieve your goals! My Dad used to tell me that, but I fumbled the ball somewhere. I'm trying to recover and find you as an inspiration! Thanks for sharing your projects! Keep the videos coming! Love seeing your progress!

    You should consider building a small shed and make it into an icehouse. You can get all the sawdust from the sawmill just north of my farm. After freeze up you can collect ice from either of the two lakes near your homestead. Every old time settler up in that country up their own ice for summer use. With enough sawdust atop the big ice blocks they will last all summer long. Just food for thought. Great progress!!!!

  • @mikeveine
    @mikeveine3 жыл бұрын

    You should consider a more efficient shower system for water usage. My wife and I can shower on about 1 gallon of water each using a gravity fed system. We attached the hose and spigot to the bottom of a bucket. The hose and spigot came from a solar/bag shower. The bucket is placed on a shelf near the ceiling in the shower. Also, your rain collection system needs some tweaking. We have been using this system for 20-some years: Gutter down spout goes into a big garbage can with a hole cut in it to fit the spout. You need a lid on the can to keep out the debris and bugs. Another hole drains out the overflow. We filter the water going in with cheese cloth and metal screening. I also put a metal mesh screen at the top of the down spout to keep out big debris and rodents. There's nothing worse than having a mouse or squirrel floating dead in your water barrel. If you want photos, let me know.
