Off Grid Cabin Security: Keeping The Bad Guys Out

I've had a lot of people ask me if I was worried about people stealing and vandalizing my property and what steps I take for security. The answer is...YES! I am concerned about my property being stolen and/or vandalized. In this video I talk about some of the steps I've taken to help dissuade people from stealing and if they'll have to work at it a bit. Plus I have cameras up so I can catch them after the fact and prosecute.
Please share your ideas so we can make the community better prepared to deal with this ever-present threat.

I saw something while driving up one of my customers driveway the other day that will help strengthen your "reputation". It was a sign that read "If you can read this sign, You're in range" I found them online for sale and plan to buy one for my place in the woods. BTW, shoes on the porch are a great idea.

drop a couple trees along the property line and funnel the traffic thru one entrance/exit. Replace the motion sensor with a driveway sensor that gets buried. Put it in the funnel. Setup a trail cam and position it to get plate numbers. Setup a honeypot trap in the yard. (something of value unprotected) Focus your trail cams so you can get a good face shot.

A supplement to barbed wire is making a cloner and cloning some thorny bushes to plant on any fence line. Plant every few feet and after a few years they will be grown all around the fence making something no one wants to touch. If you take the time to weave them onto the fence when young you can get a good spread. A cloner is simply a container with pump and spray bar to keep cuttings of the plant you are cloning damp till they sprout roots. A 18 gallon tote can be used to grow anywhere from 50-200 clones at a time depending on size and size of the holes you drill in the lid to insert the cut end. Most plants can be cloned this way with some just taking longer then others like trees taking the longest.

Good video! as a Police Officer, I share your concern of protecting your property. Unfortunately, some people don't want to respect your boundaries of what you've established as an American tax paying Citizen. Posting "No Trespassing" signs on all four corners of your property, along with physical barriers is legally sufficient in all states as a warning to violators. Guard Dogs will also assist you in your task, when you're not home. Keep it up Brother, and I support you!

  • @Doxymeister

You've got some good ideas there! Another tip would be to post near your "no trespassing" signs, a couple of those signs that show a surveillance camera and says something like "This Property Monitored". You don't even have to actually have one, just let them wonder, or if you don't want to bother with the electronics, there are fake surveillance cameras that even have a little red LED light to make it look authentic. At my own home, the north side of my house runs parallel to an alley, literally three feet from it. I had problems with people literally peaking in my windows from the alley, so I planted pyracantha (Firethorn) bushes in front of each north facing window. They are fast-growing, and do surprisingly well on the north side with no sun; I also am very disabled and honestly can't pull hoses around the back, so they didn't get watered much at all, but still thrived. I kid you not, those things have three-inch-long thorns--but stunningly beautiful bright orange-red berries in the fall and winter. LOL, anyway, the board with the nails thing works pretty good, I've actually used that one in the past. Thanks Tommy!

@@Ungovernable74 I always think the same thing. Been on a murder jury, and an armed robbery jury. Both times at least one juror was weak kneed about letting the perp do big time for their crime. In the murder, it also involved home invasion. The perp admitted during interrogation that he held an illegal gun on the couple when the gang forced them back into their apt. A 5 yr mandatory. One juror let him off because, "That's just the way they treat each other" (drug dealers). And, "I don't think he should do that much time for that." Both statements show jury nullification, but it slipped by in the deliberation room. Anyway... I would not be surprised if the same people went full "string'em up" on a homeowner who presented, "You loot - We shoot" signage around their property. Even being overly aggressive on the net about self-D could be problematic after the fact. Be prepared, but be aware of the times we are in. Courts are not as solidly about justice as we would want.

When we set our security perimeters in the field, we used three layers of razor wire. Lots of it. In the desert, we had Hesco barriers filled with sand and razor wire on top. The bad guys could still lob a hand grenade over or mortar us. We also had trip flares...which caught a lot of stuff on fire. Which happened. For your site, I would think a couple of trained dogs would work, 24/7 sound (like a radio, TV, or something). The bad guys don't like the light...our guard shacks had huge lighting carts facing out...literally blinding.

I'm a Conservation Officer and can't count how many victims I've met with over the years that wished they had followed some of these principles. I'd recommend, if your comfortable, talk with enforcement that frequent the area or neighbors you trust have them visit on occassion and conduct security checks, good way to test your surveillance systems and develop timelines. Have LE leave a business card in plain view have visitors date and time a log book when things looked secure and have your contact information when things look off. Establish relationships with neighbors write down vehicle information and other descriptions for eachother when things dont look right. Allot of great tips Sir best of luck.

I open carry every minute I am on my property. No I am not paranoid, I live in the country with a lot of wild animals. My gun is not for protection from humans, although, it can be. All my local neighbors know me and they have always seen me carry. That is what I consider my first insurance policy. They have only seen two of my guns, the pistol on my side and the rifle in my truck. I don't sport political, hunting or gun related stickers on my truck. In oregon, you must have written permission, on your person, to be on private property. You can't legally set traps to injure others. We can do as much fencing and stringing anything we want (I'm thinking twine strung across possible 4 wheeler trails) to identify areas I want to do things with on my private property, that is well posted. We can legally set traps to disable vehicles. In the city, cops are supposed to be civil because they work for us "for our security." There is no such expectation in the country when you are trespassing or stealing on my land or the land of my neighbors. Personally, I spend a lot of time and resources to make my property the way I want it. To think that someone else feels the Right to tear up private property for their own pleasure makes me get creative. It is not the young that have worked for many decades to save and to acquire what some of us have today. We also do not have the time to replace what we have acquired over a long lifetime that has now been stolen. So I take no lip from anyone when it comes to my personal security and the security of my property. I worked for the money, I saved, I bought, now I protect. I make no apologies. You shouldn't apologize either. I'd give you the shirt off my back, but if you take it from me, we will discuss the meaning of whupass. I'm too old to step into a cage to fight. But I'm still young enough with corrected glasses to see you as far as I'm able to hit my target.

Sure, its a "decorative" fence, only 4 feet tall, but with nails on top of each pipe, climbing over is awkward, time-consuming and painful. Good post All similar problems and solutions to what I'm working with. Love your idea of some cameras that trespassers can see mixed with some they can't. I'll be using that - maybe even a decoy that doesn't work. I'll also be taking your lock box idea! Thanks. My philosophy on dissuading trespassing is "Don't give them any bait and do show them the sharp hook." Meaning, don't show anything interesting to investigate. Everything out of view. I'm planting hedgerows to cover some outbuildings etc. Then make entry a hassle, especially anything that looks like it can damage a vehicle. E.g. I put big stones (~a cubic meter) at points along the fence line to make it a hazard for 4x4 I also changed my entry road when I first bought the place to dissuade trespass by people who've known the property a long time.

Your property looks good. I liked watching your security measures, but at the same time, was worried for you that you were showing your hand. I realize you weren't showing all of your measures and am glad of it. I was reminded, though, of the rural area I grew up in, where we rode our bicycles and trail bikes along established trails through neighbors property, for a distance of about 3/4 miles. It was allowed back then, but that was before the outbreak of lawyers and senseless litigation. I deeply miss the days when we were looked at as kids and not nuisances. Good luck on your property. It looks like you are well on your way.

Yeah, it's a delicate line there isn't it? I felt comfortable saying what I said because I know that I have other measures in reserves that I didn't discuss. My goal was to give some people ideas and also get a bunch of good ideas from the viewers. Based on the comments I think it was a success. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Good video! I have watched a few of yours and got some good ideas for mine! I just purchased 10 acres in Michigan. As you can see from my avitar I own and ride 4 wheelers. I have on more then one occasion got lost on ORV trails and ended up on private property. Now when I realized I was on private property I turned around and went back the same way to try and find the main trail. ( Some trails are not marked clearly) I respect other peoples belongings and I am A GOOD GUY!! Just be careful about booby traps. They are against the law weather on your property or on Federal/State land. I like the Idea with the shoes. I seen in another video (Can't remember if it was yours or not) to always leave the gate closed weather your are there or not. That way no one really knows if you are there. Keep the videos coming they are a great inspiration to me! HDHP

I ride and as a younger man I purposefully disregarded signed because I didn't care. Once I understood what I was doing I couldn't go back to trespassing and stopped altogether. An accident is one thing but when it is blatantly posted and you disregard the message it may be time to amp things up to get the message across. Of course, I don't promote or condone booby trapping anything but sometimes shit happens. I appreciate you comment and I believe you're one of the good guys.

But it has an old (70's) mobile home on the property with an out house. These add ZERO value to the property. Its zoned recreational/rural. Just wondering if I can put a mini Cabin on the property because the mobile home has been there for 30+ years. If not the Amish told they could construct a "Barn" just like yours as long as it is not attached to the ground without any permits. Thanks HDHP

Ignore the haters and keep your purpose clear. This is a present day problem for those of us not living in the city. For me? I always open carry when I'm at my (large) property. I have good fences and posted with some abnormally aggressive signs. My neighbors know me and we all get along well. We all share the need for security. Private, unnamed road (easement) with no public access to any public facilities or government maintenance. If anyone is caught, they leave with the clothes on their back, their shoes and ID. If they bring a cop back, I'll return the rest of their property to the officer. I'm 45 miles out of town. It's over a mile to the highway, then it's 15 miles to the closest business/restaurant on a rural Highway. One way in, one way out. Every neighbor carries and we are collectively the enforcers. I think getting to know the neighbors has provided the best security. A little time and a simple cup of coffee made all the difference in the world.

How did I miss this video? weird. It's always a fine line between keeping it secure but not so secure to peek their interest to see what's so important that has high level of security to it. That driveway alarm/sensor, may want to put it further away so people aren't right up on top of you before it goes off, I've got about 30-35 yards from mine. Also, I have two of those same alarms, had good luck in reducing false readings putting a 4 to 3" reduced PVC pipe over it to focus the invisible beam against the house, otherwise it's like a shotgun pattern. It would help to focus it to a tree 6-8" diameter opposite of it so something passing behind it doesn't set it off. I've had birds, bats, even moths set mine off until the mods.

Tommy...what about buying a couple of those speed strips the cops use in car chases. the place them in the way of speeding cars and the tires are punctured. The tires do not go flat immediately but slowly. By the time someone would turn around and get to the highway they would have really bad flat tires. You can probably buy them on Craigs List. You could cover them up with pine needles and a little dirt and no one would see them. You would have to tell your friend with the cabin so he does not get the benefit of them.

You can trench the driveway (like a cattle crossing) to keep most vehicles from passing through/over the obstruction. You just need to keep a couple of grates stashed off to the side that you can place over the trench when you need them. The best setup I've seen was a proper cattle crossing (expensive) that allowed you to slide the steel tubes out and secure them with a chain and lock when not in use. Yah, it's a pain, but lazy thieves want to drive up to your front door out in the country where I live.

An old timer told me about Osage. Plant some after seeds turn into saplings you can bend them down into the ground and they will start a new plant. Use a bunch of them to weave a fence but wear gloves and a thick shirt because the thorns are wicked. This will eventually make into a natural fence that will improve security. Start it near your gate. If left alone the saplings grow into trees with very straight, long branches that Native Americans used to use for their bows. The old timer also said the Osage Oranges that are the fruit/seeds of the plant can be used in basements to keep spiders out. Just remember to get the old, dried out one and replace with a new one.

My family owns some property about a half hour from Joe's, but in the next county, and we've been broken into a couple times. Once, a guy was living there in the winter and my mom noticed the phone bill and electric bill were unexpectedly large. The guy fled out the back, leaving a gun under the mattress of the bed he had been using. He was later caught in relation to other break-ins. Another time, someone broke in and stole a bunch of stuff. The sheriff knew who the likely culprits were and caught them with the goods. They were both convicted.

It would be nice to think that, but our property about a half hour away in the next county had a gate and everything was locked up. When there is no one around, thieves can have their way no matter what measures you take, and often they are drug addicts who just don't care (the guy that spent time at our place was a druggie). Even Southernprepper1 had someone steal a game cam from his second property when he wasn't around. In greatly deteriorating economic conditions, the problems of trying to maintain a property without a live-in caretaker will really become apparent.

There was never a security issue for 50 or so years, not until 4 wheelers became common. Now kids can roam the old logging roads for miles and miles looking for trouble. We installed security. Usually if you can keep their vehicles out, you can reduce trespassing. There's a limit to what they can carry for any distance. A nice long road like yours is even better, so they have to walk a ways. I love some stuff called tanglefoot, which trips them. My favorite is just fishing line, which is invisible, and they walk right into it. Good for deer, too.

I used to live on a forty-acre property next to a busy two-lane rural road. Currently I live in a gated community and my house lot is surrounded by a five food tall masonry wall and all the house entries are protected by either steel security doors or steel bar security screen doors and all the windows are impact resistant. And every adult in my home has conceal carry permits and carries everyday including inside the home. And we never leave our vehicles parked in the driveway because we do not want anyone to know whether or not we are at home. We expect that when the current recession turns into an economic depression, there will be a lot more thieves looking for something to steal. The kinds of barriers you currently have in place will keep innocent people from accidentally trespassing. They will not keep out determined thieves or vandals. The first thing I would do is make it extremely difficult for someone to drive a pick-up, Jeep or ATV onto that private driveway without your permission. The way you have it now, anyone with a pair of bolt cutters can cut those chains and then drive onto your property and do whatever they want to do when you are not there and then drive away with some of your stuff. I would put a heavy-duty five-bar metal gate all the way across each driveway entrance and hang them from/lock them to substantial metal fence posts that are filled with concrete and set at least 4 feet deep into concrete. The front of the property that parallels a public road should be protected by both a sturdy fence and some partially buried boulders or metal bollards to prevent a truck from being deliberately crashed through your fence line. My fencing of choice for both low maintenance and security is a tall chain link one topped with strands of barbed wire. Yes, this would look industrial or prison-like but it sends the message you are serious about security. The next thing I would do is put a fence of wire mesh and metal posts topped with a strand of barbed wire all the way around the remaining perimeter of the property to keep out stray livestock and stray dogs and casual trespassers. Cutting or climbing over a wire mesh fence goes beyond casual trespassing into obvious criminal behavior that is hard to explain away and will keep out the casual, opportunistic thief. This fence does not have to be as strong as the one along the road frontage because no one will try to crash their vehicle through woods to get to that wire mesh fence. The next thing I would do is put in a second set of sturdy gates about two truck lengths beyond the first set of gates to also block the driveways. And I would line each side of that section of driveway between those gates with sunken boulders or bollards wherever there is a space between trees large enough to drive an ATV. When a criminal has to get through two sets of locked sturdy gates to travel down your driveway, most will just move on to a less well defended property. Security cameras will not keep criminals off your rural property. Some of them specialize in stealing security cameras to sell to pawn shops. If you must have blurry photos of the criminals who trespassed onto your property, install some game cameras high up in the trees where they are out of reach and unlikely to be noticed. The very best and least expensive way to keep trespassers, thieves and vandals off your property is to have enough people living on the property fulltime so that there is always someone there to call the sheriff, to park your vehicles inside closed sheds where they cannot be seen from the road and to vary your schedule so that no one who monitors your property for a few weeks will know when the adults with the guns are likely to be away. And I would have at least one loaded shotgun handy at all times because it could take 20 minutes or longer for a sheriff's deputy to get there. It also helps to have a barky dog living on the property who will alert you if any person or large animal gets near your fence or gates. It does not have to be a big scary dog. Any little terrier with a big mouth and enough commonsense to not bark at every bird or butterfly will do. And I would not have a mailbox next to the public road. I would have my mail and packages delivered to a post box in the nearest town. Good luck and stay safe.

One crazy Rebel toting a 44 and a 12 ga likes your video. Got the same problems you have. Hidden cellular connected game cameras have helped, gps trackers hidden in items frequently stolen have led to recoveries and convictions, and a few well placed and hidden tire traps have greatly reduced "visitors". Go Yankee!!!

Looks like you are doing all the right things Tommy. Any more obvious security measures would just draw unwanted attention. People would wonder just what you were trying to hide. I like the idea of 2x4s with nails. If you camo them right, the trespassers won't know what happened, only that your property is hard on 4 wheeler and motorcycle tires.lol I can't think of anything you could legally do to protect your place. Great job!

The problem with no trespassing signs is they fade over time fall off or get knocked down. one thing that used to be recognized as being just as good as a sign was to paint two white rings about 6 inches wide about 2 inches apart around a tree along the property line to let people know that it was private property ,

Loosely coiled barbed wire works great on 4 wheeler paths. It gets wrapped up in axles.

Caltrops and plenty of them are good for the perimeter and get some other more sketchy means of security
