Adding Guardline Security To Our Off Grid Homestead

Living in a remote area, we take security seriously. We believe in prevention and deterrence first and foremost and so we are taking extra steps to increase security on our off grid homestead.

Guildbrook Farm - Off Grid Living I listened to a podcast with James Wesley Rawles recently where he was talking about these things. I believe he said they transmit on the MURS radio band. He was saying if you get a MURS handheld radio, it would give you the ability to have a portable receiver. I am no expert but believe MURS is similar to CB meaning no license needed. Given your acreage might be a good option for you.

Been using this same model for a few months now. So far, we really like it. Works very well at about 400' through a metal sided shop and dense trees. Some notes to anyone considering one of these: - Use lithium AA batteries. Especially if you are in extreme temperature conditions. - Expect a lot of false alarms if you have wildlife. - Install a game camera with the same coverage area to see what animals or other heat signatures are triggering the sensor. - As already stated, pick the least annoying chime.

My darling bride and I were talking about something like this just the day before yesterday. We live in a high crime area and can’t really afford ADT or other security companies and they generally don’t have the versatility that we want anyway. This system looks much more like what we want. Since I spend a lot of time in my wheelchair and don’t walk anywhere very quickly, the driveway sensor would really help me avoid jumping up every time I hear a truck drive by when I’m waiting for a delivery! Thanks Jeremy! You’re a good man! Y’all stay safe and God bless!

Looks like a great long distance doorbell but little more. One thing I would do different is when labeling the sensors use multiples of the actual sensor number. Rather than 1 and 2 I would have labeled them 3 and 6 for example. Ne'er do wells would be looking for the other sensors OR just leaving for an easier target.

They make a better system, one that tells you the channel or zone, plus it's own distinctive alarm sound. Plus, they are operated by solar. When you tighten them down, they don't move!

These being wireless can be monitored, so remember that. Someone with enough tme can monitor them and know when you are coming and going. I only know this because someone locally to me (Not sure where) has one of these and when my scanner hits the MURS frequencies I hear the "Alert, zone one, alert zone one" announcement over my scanner. This looks like an upgraded unit, so you may be a bit safer, but someone with radio knowledge can monitor them from a distance. Still a great idea to have them so you know if someone is near.

I don't have a homestead - but my husband has installed camera's so we can see whats happening. It is a game changer, someone rings the doorbell I can see who's at the door and decided if I should answer or call police, our garage and driveway is a blind-spot for us, so having camera's on that area is great. Great videos and really informative, can't wait to see you guys building your house!

I think the glow in the dark aspect of the sensors is a bad thing. I would prefer folks tripping the sensor not see a red light alerting them that they did so.

2:27, the description you read from the manufacturer aside, looking at all the DIP switches, you can tell this is a highly programmable system. I thoroughly enjoy modular/expandable things as I feel the manufacturer is more inclined to make it durable and long-lasting; often at a premium however. 4:30 Simple and intuitive. 8:44 Oh dear, best of luck!

These are great. I've got the Dakota system, which is similar, but more reliable from what I've read online. The Dakota is very programmable and the sensors are more pinpointed so you have less chances of false alarms. These products are always best to integrate into a video system that will notify your phone when the alarm is tripped. I have a camera that comes up live on my phone for each motion sensor that gets tripped.

I'll be interested to see what you think of those alarms. I have 3 driveway alarms now, but they detect vehicles breaking their magnetic field to operate rather than motion. They work really well, but longevity is an issue with them and also the base seems to build up a memory that can result in false alarms. Wind can also cause false alarms. I went with them because it would be difficult on our place to install sensors at height where they'd be inconspicuous. My worry with the motion sensors at our place is false signals by the brush blowing or critters breaking the beams. My current sensors sit low to the ground and are easily hidden. I really like 'em when the system is fully operating, but it's frustrating when there's an issue. I've been looking for something better with little success. Hope you do a follow up to this after a while.. I'd appreciate to know what you think of that system.
