Off Grid Cabin Build - #17 - Spring Thaw and Deck Build

Opening up the cabin for the season! Beautiful weather in early March allowed me to build the deck early.

My husband made a bench railing for a friend’s deck. He made it chair height, then used a 2” x 10” (or 12”) board on top of the railing. This height did not block the lake view & also could be used to sit on. Worked very well. Just an idea that worked for us.

This cabin looks amazing. I enjoyed looking at the building process "start to finish" in a slowest speed possible. This made me remember the house which my daughter lived in and they had a large pond in the backyard, and after rain the ground was very moist. Now I noticed your cabin is much closer to the water, and following your installment of the foundation made me think of the ground condition after the melting of the snow and rain. Which gave me the idea for you to install cement blocks under the foundation closest to the water, since you did use cement blocks under the "floating" deck. This is just a suggestion for the protection of your beautiful cabin. You are very talented and skilled and I am glad to have found your channel because your build is very inspiring.

Nice job on the deck. Some KZreadrs would have taken at least twice as long to do as much to pad out the content. Great progress on the property!

Only thing I would have done different to your cabin is a tiny wood burning stove. But otherwise I just love it.

Cool little cabin for sure. Do you plan on covering your deck? It will be getting all the precipitation off that side of the roof...

Put some heavy logs or cinder blocks on top of that drag attachment. Will do a better job. Great video as always. .

Looks great but I thought you were going to get some joist hangers. Also they make tape to protect the joists from rotting. It really makes them last longer. But you do a great job building. Thanks much.

Hey Justin. Always happy to see a video ! Been proudly wearing my Echos hoodie all winter ! I wouldn’t have thought about the deck that low but I like it ! Also made me think of whether or not you’ve got any plans for when the snow from the roof lands on it ? Also guessing that’s why it’s lower. I’m in Maine but I find that I subscribe and watch so many channels from northern Mn and UP areas and I think it would be a great if you did a mid winter video. If you did an annual trip to the cabin. Snowshoe in. Check on things. Clean up a little. Maybe some ice fishing. Just an idea I figured I’d mention. Hope all is well my friend. Take care

Nice Deck---I would make the front all steps & railing only on the tree side if at all...my deck is 12' X 16' with 16' step all the way across....just saying..I think it has 4 step runners if that is what you say --it looks like you only need 2 steps....I don't know if any of this makes sense but it looks nice & more than one can go down the steps at a time. I don't what that Lake is but we had a cabin on Houghton Lake ....very crowded - party town-it was nice though...that lake don't look very occupied...I live the middle of Michigan...nice to meet you

Nice cabin but the indoor metal ceiling is unpleasant. Cover it with wood!
