Off-Axis as a Movement Practice

Why movement needs a practice if we anyways move all the time?
Simply put, the practice should create a safe space to move in ways that we wouldn't move otherwise. The quality of the practice measured by how much of these extraordinary ways of moving support and nourish the movements in our daily lives. For me, off-axis work is an example of a high quality movement practice. I never visit off-axis movement as I go about in my daily life but when I do practice it I feel an immediate supportive force. The sensation of playing with the fall rather than fearing it, is a powerful metaphor. This metaphor stays in my body even when I confront a non-physical fall like an emotional, economical or spiritual one. When I am about to crash into disappointment or despair, my body remembers the movement that happens in practice, after balance was lost. I can then sense that there is also power in losing stability, there is momentum and thrill. Movement practice is the faith that something can change even within the most rigid perception of the moment. It is about admitting that dismantling frozen dogmas is not about mentally replacing them with other dogmas. It is about moving with them in a safe space and then gaining supportive experience for the risks in life. Off-axis practice is teaching my body that even what seemed as the most devasting failure, can be experienced in endless other ways...

Thanks for posting these little snippets of work. They are little inspirations for my solo practice.

@@tomweksler I did a lot of partnered Contact Improvisation before the pandemic, and have made do with solo practice for two years because of some family health restrictions. Many of your videos have shown so many different ways of interacting with gravity, the ground, and momentum and have been really inspiring - especially since I don’t have another human’s body to work with to invoke new movements. Oftentimes simply a 30 second snippet of yours will provide examples that I can use for an hour of experimentation. I really appreciate these. Thanks for the effort to put them up. And hopefully someday I will be able to attend a workshop in person!

@@eschurma Wow this is amazing! I never know how much of my ideas resonate in this medium. Keep up the study and the practice and I will take your feedback as a supportive momentum to continue sharing my process.
