So the original game saved a man's life. Older man, lost his wife, went full depressive introvert, shut himself off from his family and the world. Had 200 pounds (British money) to his name, didn't want it to go back to the government after he..... "did the deed," so he went to a pawn shop and spent his money on a PS2 and a game (this was back when a PS2 was fairly new), and chose Oddworld because the character on the front, Abe, looked as miserable as he felt, lol. With all his affairs in order he decided, in a bout of curiosity before his planned end, "why not see what I bought," so he hooked up the PlayStation and started playing......and got hooked. His plans took a backseat to the story. The next day became trying to figure out the current puzzle, how to save all the other sad little aliens and move on, until his "plans" just seemed less and less important to seeing the ending to the game. By the end he had a complete change if heart, he got back in touch with his family and got a tattoo of Abe. The team who made the game got wind of this, and one of the conductors of the train is modled after him.

I feel like Soulstorm solidifes the target audience and message of the series. While the storybook approach of it's predecessors is really cool, it can kindof weaken the impact of the very sinister reality it's depicting (and mimicking).

Yeah. I have my critiques of the remakes, mostly in that the darker visual themes were towned down more than they needed to be, but I can respect them. And Soulstorm was beautiful.

Basically yeah. It was rushed back in the 90's because Christmas was right around the corner and wanted it to be out by then.

Would you like to play a custom map for Oddysee? It's a standalone mod (separate, bundled with fan-remade game engine) so you don't need to replace any original game files. Yeah, everything about Oddworld: Soulstorm makes it feel like a redux of Abe’s Exodus. This makes me wonder if they’re Retrofitting the Canon to make way for two new games (or movies, based on how many cutscenes were in Soulstorm?) to finish the story.

They have arms, it’s where there feet are supposed to be. They probably invented a lot of technology but once they took over more civilizations they probably had them build things for them so their arms are probably vestigial now

Oh I see. Damn... Yeah no worries 👍 A friend asked me yesterday if there's any sci-fi world-building type stories that I'm into, à la Star Wars (which I don't really know, but have a passing familiarity with due to cultural osmosis) and I said "Well, there is Oddworld..." He looked it up on his phone and said closed-mindedly "it's a video game..." Because of course, the medium of an artform determines it's merit. So I went searching for a compilation of all the cutscenes so he could experience the narrative without having to play it and found this. So thank you, actually!

Soul Storm was supposed to be Exodus but a good sized chunk of it had to be left out because the company wanted it out by Christmas.

This was a cartoon remember watching on sci-fi back in the day. It had others too like a bedtime story of getting your eyes plucked out. I can't find it to save my life. Anyone know what it was?
