Yeah more darker and harsh...

Man...the visuals and voices may have really improved, yet the animation-style and sounddesign can't compare to the old ones distinct sence of hostility and urgency (you can notice some movement seem really rushed, comic-like and silly in general). The whole environment and gameplay just seem way more playerfriendly and casual. Old oddworld was a lot more terrifing!

Mario .R That too! At least he should hobble on being shot and carry noticable wounds if not diing emidiately. The walk/run cicle looks shit compared to old, they should rework that! But I suppose JAW isn't so hot for patching their "masterpiece", at least not that heavily.

Mario .R That is because there is difficulty modes, Hard mode is the one shot wonder Abe and for the camera wise, I personally like it, seeing as the game is a 2.5D game now instead of a screen based 2D game, I think they did ok with the camera in my opinion :)

Isn't it the same voice actor? if so then they wouldn't be able to replicate abe's voice how it was in the original as well years have gone by, that person has aged, they might sound a bit different so replicating a voice of many years ago isn't easy ;p

Sowhart | NEW CHANNEL! kzread.info Yes, it's the same voice actor but his voice changed from Exoddus. They said they couldn't put the old voice since it's of low quality and they had to re-record everything with the highest quality yet.

The older version is darker, grittier, more corporate and more emotive. The CCTV style in the original intro felt like a more realistic look into this corporate industry and these slaves who can be blind or disfigured are still forced to work for the Mudokens. Abe's voice and also Abe's expressions are much more emotive and urgent in the original like he direly needs to get out of there in fear of having his head impaled by these Mudokens. The Mudokens smoking their cigars, their tall dark figures and glowing orange eyes made them feel so much crueler and colder and money hungry than these new vibrant ones. The look and feel of the equipment, the carcasses and drones, the factory itself and the impaled bleeding head on a stick are much much darker and grittier and less cartoony. It really emoted the sense of fear, loss, hopelessness and corporate power that made Abe's escape so dire and filled with pressure. I prefer everything about the look of the old version with the new one seeming more shocked than depressed, it feels more vibrant and cartoony and a different atmosphere than I'm used to. Even some of the audio clips like that initial animalistic scream in the original main menu are now gone and I wish they hadn't made the change. With all that said, I'll still be buying the new one when I can.

is a controversy towards the japanese, probably for the jakuza, also the hands were changed to 3 fingers becaused the japanese meat workers were a little ofended for that, and that's why only you can see the changes in japanese version and later games

Wish they stayed truer to Abe's original voice. Still they were very loyal to the old one otherwise. Being picky here but I also don't like how the meditate bird-portal things have been made to look a little mechanical with floating metal plates. Takes away from the idea that the mudokens were an originally spiritual people that were enslaved. Instead it just sort of merges the world of the factory with the identity of the mudoken people. On the whole the updated visuals are a massive improvement, Both in atmosphere and coherency.

The old version looks grittier, but some aspects of that is down to the tech of the time. New N' Tasty wasn't made purely to rehash what already existed, but to expand it and see what modern tech would do with it.

New and Tasty's graphics are... new and tasty!

Why add those obnoxious fake scanlines on the original's FMV intro? It's not that bad on the PS1 version. Check other comparison to see how it should look.

Its probably just the way it was recorded most likely, I think they recorded the ps1 version with a capture card poorly and thus made the scanlines on playback. (either that or they recorded the PC version and just did that for well I have no idea ;P )

They're playing the PC version of Abe's Oddysee, which for some reason has really bad interlacing in the cutscenes. (I don't know why it's like that, probably just due to a crappy port)

The bottom line s this: the old one (when we were kids) had and still has a more dark/evil touch to it in which one realises how bad and painful it is to be a slave, abe's deep voice represents how terrifying the situation was, the horrors the mudokons went through, all that changed in the new version so that the new generation kids can experience a more pleasant game and still have fun instead of being frightened by it...both are great games but only us who played the original know the pressure of trying to save some1 and his race in those conditions.... 1997 forever...

Thomas Mcmullan Agree with you. Old= travelling between beautiful painted picture with deep,contemplative and mysterious ambience. New= Ugly cartoon style, less details, less deepness Always precalculed 2D wins against a rough 3D without soul.

I miss Abes old "Aaaahhhhhhhhhh" when he falls off the map and then you hear him hit the floor and then a tune plays. Why did they take that out?? I also miss when Abes body parts will hit the screen when he blows up into pieces. The sound design for the new one is no way near what the old version was like. The old version of this game is still hilarious to this day. I love the old Oddworld.

I love how there's cigar smoke on the old cut scene but not the new one @ 3:08. I think they could of done better capturing the old art style.

abes original voice was great! it got changed in Exoddus.

Gameplay looks way, way better. Although I do prefer the original cutscenes. They had a very distinct, dark and gritty look to them. Regardless I can't wait to play this game!

The original will always have a special place in my heart, but I really like the new one better. It looks better, it sounds better, and now I can see what's actually going on!

Were those horizontal scanlines really there in the original ? I don't remember the old FMVs having those.

New n Tasty looks great but The original had a more darker, gloomier and grittier look and feel to it. I like how Abe sounded back then too. Really hate the new controls though. Thank god for PC lol changed it and now its real close to the original.

New n' Tasty looks astounding. Odd World was always ahead of its time, but it does need an update, they really nailed it here. Let's hope this leads to new Odd World games if this sells really well.

I like how they made Abe more expressive in the new version, but I also think his reactions were made too cartoony and exaggerated compared to the original.

Old game looks better. Less technology, but much more atmosphere.

Luke Rage That's not hate Dip shit, That's his opinion, And in my own, The old one still hold up as better. Granted the new one looks nice, But it makes some people sad or mad to see the style change to this bright, No cut to next room, misunderstanding the first games layout, piece of work. New n Tasty is just not that great when hold up to the older one because of the thought that went in to the first one. And if you say that New n tasty is better, Then good for you man. Be happy with it, just don't shit on peoples love for how it was when it FIRST came at, Now also remember that Abes old world wouldn't be popular WITHOUT the old one, So think about that. I'd play the new one, But still think about the first one. That's just me tho.

Why do people bitch about the new version, yes the old one is a classic I have played it myself and love it, but the new one looks good too, has the same mechanics, the voice may be changed but not that much and the visuals are better so why bitch about something that is just like the classic but with better visuals, I don't get it. People tend to hold their nostalgia on pedestals far too high, and are totally unwilling to look down around them to acknowledge that everything is constantly changing, in franchises as much as they do in the natural world around us. It's ridiculous, but all generations of humanity seem to do it. I remember the hilarious backlash that Toys For Bob got when they rebooted Spyro by creating the Skylanders series. It was a pathetic sight to see 25-30 year old men and women condemn an innovative and engaging family platforming game because it didn't look and play EXACTLY like the Spyro games they remembered in childhood.

Yes the voice sounds different but iam shure its the same guy who speaks abe and the guy is Lorne Lanning. Lanning makes the most voices in the oddworld games. I like the new soudn from the voice better as the voice in the original game!

QuestionDeca Oh absolutely, I'm well aware of that fact. That's part of the insanity I was alluding to really. Spyro's role as a Skylander is akin to say Iron Man's role in The Avengers - he's part of a 'super-hero' team that defends this realm of Skylands. So many people of the demographic I mentioned got that totally confused. If anything, Toys For Bob paid a heartfelt homage to Spyro's role as a kickass superhero of the platforming world by including him in their Skylands concept. 'Reboot' was the only word I could find to apply to the rekindling of Spyro in the gaming world; Skylanders isn't strictly a reboot in the common sense.

I like the original look of the Mudokon pops more, but the new look (although it was already censored to look like that in the Japanese release of the original IIRC) is more in line with how the Paramite pies and Scrab cakes were presented, so it's not all bad.

They removed the severe head and replaced it with a kiddish look to match their other products. Makes sense. But before people complain that the game isn't dark anymore, they should probably check the bad ending-- (spoilers) its just as gruesome as the 97 game.

When this came out in 97, I was 5. I rememeber playing it around the age of 9 or 10, perhaps that's why everyone thinks this game was creepier back then?? We were all children lol...New n tasty rocks

My Childhood Game I love Ade so much

I think I like the atmosphere about the same in both versions. The older version was dark and gloomy because it's a dark and gloomy place, and it kind of makes you feel like there's no hope in that place, and that you *have* to leave if you want to breathe, but the remake has this yellow and orange glow to it from the alarm, simulating fire and giving you a real feel of just how dangerous the place is.

I like the old one more, its much darker and fits the atmosphere far better

Can't wait to play this game. Hope the file size isn't too big on psn.

Thanks for the comparison. This game brings nostalgia to a new level for me - it was the very first game we bought and played on the PlayStation. This new release - I can't tell you how happy I am with it! The mechanics, the audio and visual are absolutely stunning and in no way, compromising of the old great game that we all knew and loved. Haters gonna hate and that's ok, because I'm super happy with the new release :D

I love the look of the remake and i will definitely buy it, but the new colours and new cartoonish animations do take away from the creepiness and darkness of the original.

Sophie Beer It has already been released. Only for PS4 though. It will come to PC, PS3, PSVita, WiiU and Xbox One. But no release dates yet unfortunately.

while new'n'tastys cutscene animation is better I think the old version had a better "playabe" character animation (walking, jumping, talking etc.). the new ones look slidey and way to fast. and I noticed just now that in the new version Molluck looks worried about their new product instead of laughing like the others. maybe it's cause he has to put his workforce onto the choppingboard.

I enjoyed the remake a lot. But it didn't come across as dirty and grimy like in the original, and that had a lot to do with the atmosphere in the game. Gave it areal hostile/3rd world look.

That game has stuck with me since childhood. CLASSIC! The updated graphics is not really changing much, for me. When we all played this game, (as young people) we did not care about grahphics. Its was that FEELING @SemihÖrnek was talking about. This new updated version, is HOW I SAW IT AS A KID, cause it was scary at that time. Today it look a bit too much colour-graded with no dark corners to make you think twice about jumping...Just one appinion...What's yours..?

the original has more epic proportions in the background, but it's a bit grey compared to the series's later titles, what has been nicely corrected here.

I prefer the original lighting/color scheme as it just made it a bit more nightmare-inducingly depressing in some way ;p Old voice was better too. Other than that this remake is amazing.

Oddysee looks so much grittier

i do like the old game for the look maybe its nostalgia or maybe its atmosphere but i do like it i also enjoy the new look because it makes the game look stunning and really breaths some life into one of my favorite characters Abe and the whole one bullet=a fucking bird fly away from abe thing is bullshit they most likely implemented the whole difficulty setting thing to this was, unquestionably, to attract not only hardcore players who love getting their shit pushed in by the games difficulty i.e Dark souls and impossible game players and also some less hardcore people who enjoy a "difficult" but rewarding puzzle plat-former essentially everyone else who loves to play this sort of genre quite frankly i'm just glad this game even exists so fans and new players can experience one of the many gems the ps1 had to offer

there is. on hard mode. new 'n' tasty has easy, medium and hard dificulty. (i bet you and i and alot of classic players are going to play on hard mode withouth doubt)

Honestly i feel like the better the graphics get the less creepy games look. Like house of the dead 2 zombies were creepy as hell and the grungy dirty looking atmosphere graphics made it even more creepy. New creatires look too expressive too human. They loose the creep factor. They also have far too many of them on the screen all at the same time. At that point they are just pests. In the original ypu would walk down a empty hall way and be assulted by one very strong zombie with chainsaws. Like i can remember the placement of every zombie in that game. But the new ones juat arent memorable. Its just constant shooting for the entire game with no time to take in anything.

To be honest I like the new one better;)

They make a new console. "It's going to be NEXT GENERATION!" they say... although it barely is an upgrade from the previous 8 year old one. "You will experience 1080p gaming, true HD, in full 60fps!!" they say ... although the new games coming out are already 30fps and rarely do we see 1080p. You would think with all this hardware and the money that is in the industry now they would be doing something MORE for the customers than remaking 15 year old PC games, which were toally fine to begin with, and selling them back to the new generation. Make a fucking NEW Oddworld, for fucks sake. Be original! Design something new! It's such a joke. What is more "NEXT GEN" than a 2D platformer made on a different system 15 years ago for a 16MB PC? I mean, do they have ANY writers or designers left? Or is it just ... if we are not making FIFA 16, Tombraider 12 or Call Of Duty 29 then we should just remake an old PC game and sell them that... Too bad that Eurogamer fiddled with the video material of the original Abe's Oddysee game. Seriously, why would you ADD fake scanlines and REMOVE almost all of the colors of the original Abe's Oddysee intro video? Trying to make the remake 'New 'n Tasty' look better in comparison? Yes, but either way - the original was FMV, New N tasty's introduction is ENTIRELY rendered in the same engine you play the game in. Is that not impressive enough for ya?

being an old oddworld fan of both the originals, i can't help but notice the new one is lacking atmosphere, it seems colorful and exciting compared to the other ones which had a much more serious/grotesque vibe. abes voice also seems forced, whereas the older ones sounded much more genuine for some reason. also, i dislike the comic-book style animations he does during/after the board meeting, something is off.

the game is great I just use to like more the gamespeak from the original and the voices from the enemies

Currently playing New N Tasty, it's more forgiving as others have said. It's a great game, but lacks the eerie and terrifying feeling the previous one had.

Obviously the original is better, voice, atmosphere, landscapes (YES, PAINTED LANDSCAPES > 3D, I said it) and animations. They did a good job remaking it though. My only complaints are the new puzzles, so unoriginal. Oh and the checkpoint system really gets on my nerves.

While I can respect the amount of work that went into this and admit that it looks really nice, I have to say I'm disappointed: The Original Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus painted Oddworld as this dark, grotesque and perfectly realized world... I hate that they went down the Munch's Oddysee road with it and made it more broad and slapstick-y.

Idk cant say i was ever a big fan of this game but the new one looks more cartoonish?

the new game is cool but the original is more realistic and you feel more scared watching it. It's not people hating on the game by saying the new one is cartoony. The new one is very cartoony. look at the way abe reacts to seeing that they are going to turn him and his friends into food vs the old one. In the new one he runs away like a tex avery cartoon while in the old one he runs away realistically. I think both sides need to calm down though. For the people dissing on the people loving the classic look I feel you are just no looking into it enough to see what they are seeing. And for the people hating on the new one it's really not that bad actually a bit overly cartoony yes but it's far better then munches oddysee
