I had a similar thing to the Rabbit back in 2000 to get cable TV to my bedroom (because my bedroom had no cable hookups). The transmitter and receiver had flat plastic antennas and looked kind of like tiny satellites. The transmitter was connected to a VCR in the living room, which was connected to analog cable. (I was the only person in the house who didn't have a digital cable receiver.) I also had a set of pyramid shaped devices to transmit the remote signal to my VCR to change the channel. One problem with that setup was that I would have to run to the other side of the house to put a tape in the VCR. :P The picture quality was pretty good and was (mostly) free of interference. Occasionally, I would have to wiggle the antenna around, but that wasn't too common. The other problem I had with that setup was that there was interference whenever anybody would walk across the signal path. Not too bad for something that transmitted across an entire house through several walls.

I figure the interference is because the wiring is old as hell or just too thin a gauge to carry such a high signal like AV. It looks to be smaller than 22 AWG, try some 18 or 16 gauge wire if it'll fit, and see if you can get some shielded wire, you may have better results.

I have a feeling some older capacitors have some play in the bad signal.

Yeah, it might be the wire, but I also wonder if that section of spectrum is just subject to more household and extra-household interference now than in the 1980s. Also, even though these units look to be in good condition, some components don't age well - capacitors in particular, and I wonder how much performance degradation due to capacitors degrading might be at play. It'd be interesting to play with for someone used to re-capping boards.

We had a similar thing called a "video sender" here in the UK. I remember having one at home around 1989/90 and like the VCR Rabbit it was just awful. Lots of flickering and interference, and a complete waste of money. I think we used it about twice. I remember hearing about an incident with one of these. Someone who lived near a TV transmitter repeater owned a video sender. It interfered with the single broadcasting from that repeater. A whole town had the BBC's Sunday night religious programme "Songs Of Praise' replaced temporarily with a hardcore adult film which was being sent through one of these.

My father used this setup to record radio stations into vhs in ssp getting 8hrs of playback. Then we had portable vhs player (that would hook up to a huge camcorder and battery pack) but he would hook it up in his truck and play music in the truck when we were out in the middle of nowhere where there's no radio signals.. He was a mad scientist

I had to cringe when I saw all the melted into Styrofoam pieces and parts, this means everything you had was kept in a nice hot location every year, more than likely someone's attic. Seeing as this stuff is 20+ years old, and the heat placed on them, the caps are certainly 100% shot and dried up, and I think the root of many of this things problems. I can only imagine the wired version sent 24VAC or so down the tiny speaker wire with a superimposed version of the A/V signals on top of that, which is how this engineer would've done something like that to keep things cheap. You'd need good caps on the other end to be able to undo that mess in filtration to separate each signal again (power, sound, video). If you're handy with an iron, all that stuff should be through board and mouser has plenty of cheap electrolytics to replace that stuff. I bet you'll find they work better. The wireless version clearly had some nasty cap noise and interference with something nearby in the 900mhz band those supposedly used.

Never even heard of this kinda thing over in the UK I do remember back when we had I think satellite TV but could have been cable, my sisters TV in her bedroom (which did not have sat/cable) would actually on a certain channel pick up the audio of the TV downstairs whatever it was watching. Never been able to replicate it since. Just thought I'd share, was quite odd to us.

When I was young, VCRs were affordable enough that we could have one for both of the TVs in my house (though I think it was mostly so we could record more than one show at once). Consequently, the whole concept of the VCR Rabbit is completely alien to me.

This seems kind of similar to a Radio Shack composite video sender I got back in the early '00's for Whole house PC gaming on TV, the video quality was better than the VCR Rabbits (as they were, of course, a newer technology), though they still suffered slight video interference, for some reason though, I could never get the IR blaster to work, the IR blaster seems to work quite well on the VCR rabbit though

  • @morelenmir

I think many people would have been better just slotting a coax Y-Splitter in to their video recorder output socket and running a length of plain coax cable to the second room. Certainly that is what we did when I was young. At maybe twenty-five feet the reception was more than good enough and this setup actually lead outside the house to re-enter through my bedroom window frame. I suppose the - wired - 'Rabbits' boosted the signal to some degree and attempted to clean it a little, which was probably handy. Otherwise it doesn't seem the earliest models had much to recommend them. I am surprised the wireless setup did not do better. I'd guess you've got at least one dead electrolytic or maybe tantalum capacitor in your 1990 transmitter which is causing the picture roll.

I've had to do this kind of setting up and tuning an antenna in the last week or so. I've ended up with a flat antenna stuck to an open window to get a watchable picture without a direct connection to the rooftop aerial in the bedroom. I'm going to have to get a bloke in to put a feed in so I can shut the window. This kind of testing and trying set up after set up would drive me absolutely nuts. Moreso than I am already. It would end with a pile of smashed electronic gizmos on the path below my windows. Ben, you have the patience of a saint.

I still have my VCR rabbit. However, it's nonfunctional. It was the one that use the wire. I used it because I only wanted one cable box but I had two TV's. Back then they say you still could get in trouble for splitting your cable. Technically, I was splitting my VCR. I have a big blue Rubbermaid box full of stuff that I called my radio shit box. Are you in need of any old obsolete parts?

The "sputtering" during the '92 model tx/rx test could possibly be a result of interference from a nearby wi-fi router. I have an X-10 brand wireless video receiver/sender set that operates around 2.4Ghz with 4 channel variations (ABCD), and had a very similar type of interference. Changing the wi-fi channel on the router did the trick there. I assume the rabbit operates on a much different band, possibly somewhere in the low band VHF range, but it's still possible it may be picking something up nearby, maybe even an FM radio station or over-the-air digital broadcast signal. As for the '90 model receiver, it seems the video level and RF levels are out of whack. It may be possible to fine tune some variable pots inside the unit to clear things up.

I think part of your issue with poor picture in the 90's models may have been related to confusing the RF "coax" Input Channel selector 3-4 for a transmit channel selector, to be used in conjunction with the actual transmit channel selector A-B-C. I recognize that no color, all hiss picture from VCR/nintendo setup days. You could still switch the betamax to talk on channel 4 but it would give you the same results across your choice of 3 frequencies. Somone else mentioned wifi and that also makes a lot of sense. We have more radio waves flying around then ever, at least compared to 20 years ago

OK? I am fair solder and have general under standing electrical resistance have been repairing PC motherboards for years. longer wire more resistance. Lamp Cord thing come from Audio site and even come up at music shops from time to time. General end up that there is no detectable difference between wire of same wire gauge vs branded audio cord and lamp wire. Hence similar wire has similar physical/electrical property. I was figuring that video quality improve when upgrading Coax cable so the Rabbit may show improvement. I now think issue with the video may have more do with shielding there a lot more radio interference now then when Rabbit came out everyone has WiFi these days.
