    Good God we had a TVguardian in my house briefly when I was a kid. I say briefly because it would frequently censor words without regard for context and then me and my sister would ask our parents questions they weren't prepared to answer. For instance; while watching toy story, it would change Woody's name to "feelings"... there are no words.

    Ah, yes, back when there were just parents... ... and the FCC ... and the MPAA ... and Moral Majority style "family values" pressure groups ... and numerous outdated obscenity laws This kind of stuff really does make my skin crawl, though, especially the strange fixation on "bad" words. Besides, if you're going to censor movies, you should do it the right way: by turning raunchy dialog into bizarre, word salad non-sequiturs which can change intense drama and action into surrealist comedy on a dime. Bad/funny TV edits really should be preserved IMO, they are like their own weird, mutant art form.

    So to prove that families watching TV together are constantly bombarded with profanity, they chose "The Wolf of Wall Street" as an example? An R-rated, very mature-themed movie that is not in any way intended for children? How about instead of paying for a censor subscription, you take a second to look at what movie you're about to play before you show it to your kids?

    See that would be way too hard, because parenting is supposed to be easy and looking at the movie rating before you watch it, that's tough. In all seriousness, a lot of this is just parents who don't do any research on the movie or show they're about to watch, or game they're buying for their kids, so when it's pointed out to them that it's ultimately their fault for not vetting the content they allow their children to consume, it's more important for them to instead blame everyone else, and not themselves

    TV censorship is so absolutely stupid. Overhere in Germany you can basically show and say anything on any channel at any time of the day and guess what, we are all still alive. Especially today where every kid has internet access anyway. Completely pointless. If parents take care of their children and educate them accordingly, they know how to handle profanity and are "capable" of hearing harsh language without losing all values and social competence at once.

    One thing to mention, there was a company called "CleanFlicks" that sold edited movies on video and DVD (I think "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" was probably one of the ones they sold). I fondly remember my high school history teacher having one of those for the Oliver Stone film "JFK". The Directors Guild of America also went after them alongside "ClearPlay", and was ruled in the DGA's favor.

    These products obviously only work based on closed captioning signals and can't affect other styles of subtitling or censor the audio when the offending language isn't represented in the closed captioning (or, obviously, if the closed captioning doesn't perfectly match up with the timing of the dialogue). It's a neat idea, but it has such glaring faults that it can't be anything close to a substitute for just doing some parenting and making sure your kids aren't watching stuff you don't want them to watch!

    Every kid I grew up with that had over protective parents that would use things like this and not let their kids watch R rated movies turned out all fucked up as adults. Sex addicts, Heroin addicts, drug addicts alcoholics, teen age mothers, criminals, high school drop outs, prostitutes for drugs etc. The few that didn't go down this path have no personality and are not people you would want to spend time with. So good thing you didn't let your kid hear the word fuck or see an R rated movie; you totally ruined your kids lives. If the worst thing in your kids life is seeing the word fuck; they probably have a pretty sheltered environment and maybe it would be good to expose the horrors of the word to them before they see it themselves.

    The funny thing about the moral panic which created the legislation for the v-chip is that Congress convinced everyone of how necessary it was, legislated it as a requirement, and just a couple years later, after it was required to be in place on every consumer set and box, the vast majority of adults fell into the categories of "didn't know it existed" or "didn't know how to use it". And that majority numbers grew every year. Now, I'm all for consumer choice and protection, but this was just pandering.

    one of my former neighbors had TVGuardian box for a few days......they hated cursing in their TV shows/movies and thought it would be a good idea....i asked them about it after a few days and they said he tried to imitate it by saying "I XXXX it, it really XXXX"....and then he said "I hate it, it really sucks"....and said it was that sensitive....it would censor anything including words like "whiskey" and "cigarettes" cutting out the whole sentence. It wouldn't be so bad if there was a buffer in them that would just read the caption data a few seconds before being displayed and bleep out words like TV shows do

  • @TheMediaHoarder
    @TheMediaHoarder9 жыл бұрын

    One GOOD use for an older TV Guardian box is that you can use it as just an external closed-caption decoder turning off the censoring, which might be useful if TVs ever stop including those for analog signals. If you actually wanted to watch a censored movie would you have to keep the captions turned on though? There's a VidAngel app on Roku boxes now, but they still have that weird system where you have to buy every movie at full price and sell it back, and I don't have time to test that out.

I didn't care about profanity or mild violence or nudity because that's life and he needed to learn about life and what not to say or do. The most asinine thing is it's apparently okay with racist epithets which I mean I can at least see the argument about those having actual capacity to harm, but no, it's only concerned about nondescript swear words that are considered "impolite." So if it's a racial slur that's ALSO considered a swear word (like the N-word) it'll get censored, but not something that's just as racist despite not being a specific slur.

    I was expecting this censorship to be hilarious, like the ones done in English dubbed anime. I was sadly disappointed.

    How do these devices have better automatic subtitles than KZread?

    The subtitles are embedded into the vertical blanking interval of the video.

    The subtitles are already on the show/movie/whatever, the box scans the subtitles for profanity, replaces the words, and mutes the sound if it finds anything.

    +Oddity Archive; first, right after watching, I did a quick looky-loo; the 'ProtectV is STILL being marketed (I'm not print a link as its censorship. Exactly WHO is the 'one'who chooses what is/isn't allowed?) It's the job of a PARENT to TEACH THEM (ESPECIALLY when they're YOUNG and WANT to learn (I'm sure we've all encountered baby-makers who allow their spawn to run amok, yell, etc., and if anyone date say anything, the egg/sperm donor says, 'but they're ONLY (fill in any age where a child's Iold enough to do the above, but - according to them - too STUPID to learn how to behave in public). I wouldn't sl call these things 'parents', because they're to stupid to realise; they made it, they're RESPONSIBLE for it (there's part of the answer why so many 20-somethings act like they're still children). In my odd family, growing up my... father (who suffers from manic depression aka 'bi-polar'', but it was never acknowledged. You try to be a kid with a parent who's either one of those extremes - it isn't easy at all) thought I was on the phone too much (I wasn't. Nothing compared to the amount of time kids today spend on-line). He went and purchased a PHONE LOCK. It was a lock which installed into the dial (yes there was touch tone, but he didn't think it necessary). The very first time I tried to use the phone and saw this thing on it, let's just say thank goodness Ma Bell STILL covered EVERYTHING and quickly replaced it 😁. Back to this; it's laziness. It's 'let John do it' thinking. As you pointed out, been, cable TV can be set to block out stuff, but almost no parent does it. If a parent doesn't want their kid to watch something, it's their job - it's NOT for the provider of the show/network, etc to 'censor'. That's just the 'think about the children'' line of thought and it's wrong (for anyone who doesn't know what 'think about...' is, it's a cliché which has evolved into a rhetorical argument. There's a terrific Wikipedia article on it. One of the few in that tash heap I'd recommend - HIGHLY). Another great show. BTW; it's spring '20, and the planet's in quarantine, so I've been spending a good deal of time enjoying some of your episodes I've not seen. You've helped make my days better, thanks, Ben!
