The MZ-R70 is not a really a lower-end model, actually it was more expensive than the NF610. It's just three years older. Longplay was introduced in late 2000, all the NetMD modes in mid 2001. The R70 was introduced in early 2000, that's why it doesn't have those modes.

Years ago I was at a Warren Zevon concert. A guy had one of these and asked if he could stand next to us while he recorded the show. Well, I didn't care so I said fine. Then the guy just walks away. So it looked like I was bootlegging if anyone had seen it. Guy did sens me a tape copy, it was pretty good quality for a bootleg. Thanks for reminding me of that memory.

I bought MZ-R70 back when it was new and luckily I still have that walkman. Made a bunch of field recordings with it.

The reason you can't access the radio tuner with that remote from MZ-R70 is because the radio tuner is not contained in the MD unit. The radio tuner for the MZ-NF610 was contained in the in-line headphone remote. Your trying to access a radio tuner that isn't in the MD unit itself.

Wow that gets some great sound! I may have to look into this as a field recording option. Thanks!

The silver R70 is definitely an older model. I had it when it was new. It was in a weird era before full on MP3 dominance and catered to those who wanted portability/easy recording. The thing was built like a tank and was great for those of us who traveled heavily. Later Net MD models are the most user friendly and easiest to deal with obviously...but the fact all you need on the R70 is an optical cable to record was useful given the horrible software that some MD players needed back in the day.

I was always hoping that they would develop a portable CD recorder. It seems they never did, though.

Yup, I gotta record the toilet flushing every time I get a new recorder as well. Is that some sort of unwritten tradition? I have one of them "spy" recorders that I bought a few years ago that are basically a USB thumb drive with an on board audio recorder. Mine records at 48kHz using ADPCM and can records for like a few hours. I made a wind guard out of a couple of layers of air conditioner filter for window units to place over the microphone for outdoor recording that works well for that. Back on July 4, 2013, I placed it on a small table in the back yard to record the neighbors shooting off fireworks, and had pretty good results that I edited and transfered to a CD (down sampled to 44.1kHz of course). It doesn't record using automatic level control so the loud pop would be distorted, but generally those kind of sounds are distorted anyway and ALC would of just crapped it out. Back on July 4, 2015, I decided to have another go at recording the fireworks, and the neighbors were exploding tons of illegal stuff. This time, I hung the recorder from our antenna mast to get clearer sound. That recording is my favorite. The recorder does record in stereo which I did confer after close examination in Audacity, but the stereo separation is too small to hear. It would of been nice to have a stereo mic input or even a monural mic input though. I would like a better recorder one day that had an LCD meter and manual recording level control since I am not a fan of clipping the audio.

Sadly I own three minidisc players. A blue one like shown that records. A sports one that should record but play only, and a home unit. Still in use.

I have two MZ-R 70, one in blue and one in black. The blue one is giving trouble. The 2LP 4LP modes are rubbish as quality degrades. It's best to leave MD full quality or if not just use and iPod.

Ben, I have a Sony MX-NF810 with the remote intact. For what it's worth, the model number of the remote is RM-MC37LT should you want to go hunting. I assume since your blue one and mine are from the same era/range, it should be compatible. edit: according to Sony's spec sheet pdf for the 610, the same remote model is listed, so that's definitely the correct remote.

I may've missed this info somewhere between watching this and the parent episode, but how would one retrieve the audio recording from the Walkman and upload it to the computer? Does that require having the big MD recorder device, or can it be done from the Walkman to the computer?

Your recording is nice :) I have one too, paid about 5 euro because the right side of the screen is broken (LCD leak) Nice : Good sound ; 2 headphone slots ; quick to start in recording mode (starts recording while still booting) Meh : Loud motor noise ; slow to start in playing mode ; "end search" can't be set as default
