I briefly went to broadcasting school years ago, and I remember one instructor mentioning how much time it takes to fully power up a transmitter, and if it isn't fully powered up before bringing the radio station on the air (for those smaller stations that literally ceased broadcasting overnight, which still existed into the 90s) you could damage it bad enough it needs expensive repair and the station will be off the air that whole time. Therefore, if you were late getting in to get the station on the air in time, you were better off just coming on the air late than trying to come on the air in time to a non-fully warmed up transmitter. Not entirely sure if it relates to the powering down and powering up these transmitters had to do, but it might. "The more you know."

Wow, I can just imagine the broadcast transmitter techs way back when horrified: "they want us to turn it off... then on... then off. then on!? using THIS gear!?! -- that just won't happen no matter who wants it, it's impossible! but... oookAAAaaay here it goes" KA-BAM! (transmitter room fills with pcb capacitor cancer smoke vape) (station employees taken to prison after hospital burn treatment for failure to transmit). Genuine royal grade AAA foot stamping idiots must have thought of this.

Your open is very authentic. By the time I started working in broadcasting in 1969, Conelrad had dropped the "640 kc. or 1240 kc." requirement because changing frequencies often required non-technical announcers to dig around inside transmitters to change coils and crystals...totally impractical under emergency conditions. The "carrier off-on twice and tone" remained, however. This activated the simple Conelrad receivers of the day which were located at other stations, helping to (slowly) spread the word.

In New York City, a lot of buildings had signs that says “Fallout Shelter” on housing projects, apartments, etc. which was used during the 1960’s where there was a sign of a nuclear attack, they have to rush into the shelter to prevent from blowing them up causing nuclear fallout. I saw the Fallout Shelter sign since I was a kid, right up until now, because it was scary.

Have you seen the movie Special Bulletin? It's a made for tv sci-fi psychological thriller. It's basically a movie that aired on A&E. It was basically about what would CNN be like if this was an actual nuclear terrorist attack going on in a city.... The problem with that movie it was in the mid 80s when cable was becoming popular and people randomly flipping through channels thought it WAS A REAL LIFE TERRORIST THREAT and the news was breaking into the channel the movie was on

Has anyone ever seen the simulated conelrad alert here? kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6Jp2tKvkamYo9I.html simulates what would've happened if the Cuban missile crisis went completely downhill, some small inaccuracies but overall really well done.

And today we have to endeared those stupid amber alerts. At least dish network does not honor those alerts.

You take something that most of us associate with deathly serious events (natural or man made disaster) and use it for something comparatively less important. The last time I heard an amber alert from another persons phone, it scared me quite a bit. We should be keeping EAS alerts and their alert tones for disasters exclusively. Amber alerts should use a different alert tone entirely, I feel. Otherwise you its effect may be diluted over time.

+djraptorx Well, I think they can serve the public good. We shouldn't have to worry that WWIII just started, or that a tsunami or a tornado is about to destroy your local area, as a result, however. I only had awareness of the last few years of the Cold War as a child, but it was enough for me to associate hearing EAS warning with impending destruction.

excrono I can understand that. I was more replying to OP who referred to AMBER alerts as "stupid." I dunno how anyone can see something that helps rescue kids who were kidnapped and are in severe danger as "stupid."
