Odd Time Signatures for GUITAR - theory, songs & examples
In this guitar lesson you learn all about odd times signatures or odd meters, like 5/4 and 7/4 time signatures. I'll give you examples from the great bands like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Sting and the Beatles. In this guitar tutorial we look at composers like Bernstein and Jazz musician like Dave Brubeck and progressive rock guitarists and bands like John Petrucci, Steve Vai, and System of a Down. Learn to play odd meters like 5/4 time signature, 7/4 time signature, 10/4 time signature, 11/8 time signature and the hemiola.

Really cool suggestion for an odd time song: CHON - No Signal. At 0:27, the guitar starts the main riff. Counted in sixteenths, it is felt as 9 9 9 5. At about 0:42, the drums begin to follow the same feel. Then the coolest part, at 1:15 the drums begin to play 4/4 over the top of the entire thing. Because 9+9+9+5=32, he can plan simple time over the top and it all syncs back up at the start of the loop again.
