Octopus Reacts to Wig - Episode 14

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Many of you requested a reaction video with a wig in the comments section of previous episodes. This seemed like a great idea so we took a bright pink wig, rinsed it thoroughly, put it on a mannequin head, and lowered it into the observation tank with our octopus.
We expected him to carefully explore the wig. Some of us even went as far as predicting that our octopus would pull the wig off of the mannequin head. This was definitely not the case. It soon became evident that our octopus actually disliked touching the hair.
His reaction to the wig was surprising. We got a very similar reaction to this same wig while observing another octopus. He slowly approached and then pulled away as soon as he felt the wig. Similar to what we see in this video. Naturally, the next step was to try a different wig. The octopus was once again hesitant to touch or explore further.

As it is first starting out, LOOK at how HIS RIGHT EYE is raised higher than his left eye!! See it?! They do that when they are REEEEALLY checking something out or to peek over a solid object. (like a rock, etc) I LOVE when they do that! LOL!

What a fascinating run! He clearly disliked the feel of the mannequin, and I couldn't see that he ever touched the wig. But two things stood out to me: He constantly shaped himself like the wig, no streamlining through the water this time. And it was fun to watch his arms "thinking," the individual suckers moving like a player piano. Also, how do you always find the perfect music to highlight each episode? This track was all floaty, like a slow belly dance-which he was essentially doing. Great job, Octolab.

I have learned new things today. Apparently cephalopods are colour blind and yet can perceive colour, just not the way we do. Got the impression of "what is that creepy thing?" Do the tentacles tightly spiral at the tips when they're feeling some trepidation? Wondering what the reaction would be to a natural hair color? Seems to me, bright crazy colors like that are a warning of poisonous things in nature. Noticed that the exploration was on the dummy head, of a more natural color, rather than the incredibly ugly wig... I mean seriously... that's worthy of caution. Admittedly, I may just be reading my own reactions into the octopus movements.

  • @ravenmorrigana1093
